Deutsche Telekom's TeraStream Shows Multivendor 100GbE / DWDM

Deutsche Telekom confirmed multi-vendor interoperability on a 100 Gigabit Ethernet long haul link on TeraStream pilot network in Croatia.

The tests, which were a joint effort between Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Hrvatski Telekom and Deutsche Telekom, represent an important milestone towards the future of generally available 100GbE networking.

The actual link, the industry’s first of its kind, consisted of 600 km of Standard Single Mode Fiber (SMF) between the cities of Split and Varazdin using leveraging the TeraStream colorless, open spectrum, passive network. The 100 Gbps signal, carrying live production traffic, used ITU standard 50GHz spacing via a high gain forward error correction algorithm capable of achieving 10Gbps comparable distances. The implementation in this test used pre-standards, aligned in ITU Study Group 15.  Multi-vendor interoperability on the 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) long-haul DWDM links was established between IP routers from Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent. Cortina Systems also provided technology for the tests.

In December 2012, Deutsche Telekom AG together with Hrvatski Telekom (HT), Deutsche Telekom AG’s subsidiary in Croatia, launched its TeraStream pilot network in Croatia. TeraStream is an industry leading network concept, based on a cloud enabled IP architecture. The pilot features 100 Gbps links over a filter-less DWDM system.

HP Builds an SDN Ecosystem

HP is building an enterprise-class SDN open ecosystem with the upcoming release of an HP SDN Developer Kit (coming November 2013) and followed by an HP SDN App Store (opening first half of 2014).  The company said it goal is to create new business opportunities for partners while providing a simple way for customers to purchase and deploy network services.

The HP SDN Developer Kit provides developers the essential tools to create, test and validate SDN applications, leveraging HP’s SDN infrastructure and full complement of support services. The SDK supports HP VAN SDN controller with API documentation, developer guide and sample code.

Current SDN ecosystem partners registered for the HP SDN Developer Kit include Aastra, Blue Coat Systems, BlueCat, Citrix Systems, Ecode Networks, F5, Infoblox, Infranics, Intel, KT Cloud, Microsoft, MIMOS, Mitel, NTT, PwC, Qosmos, Radware, Real Status, Riverbed, RMIT University, ShoreTel Inc., Samsung, SAP, Tech Mahindra, VMware, Versatile and Websense.

The planned HP SDN App Store will let customers browse, search, purchase and directly download SDN applications onto their Virtual Application Networks SDN controller, creating a new business model for how network services are purchased and implemented.  The SDN App Store will include applications developed by HP, applications jointly-developed with partners, and partner-certified and community-created applications.

AT&T Rolls All Fiber 1 Gig Broadband Network to Austin

AT&T has begun deployment of a 100 percent fiber Internet broadband network in Austin, Texas, promising download speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second.

AT&T expects to being delivering its first "U-verse with GigaPower" in Austin in December. The company expects initially reach tens of thousands of customer locations throughout Austin and the surrounding areas this year, with additional local expansion planned in 2014

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Share of China Mobile TD-LTE Rollout

China Mobile has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio  4G TD-LTE overlay for its nationwide rollout.

Alcatel-Lucent said this award represents 11% of CMCC’s strategic plan to deploy more than 207,000 TD-LTE base stations in China by the end of 2013.  

Alcatel-Lucent noted that it has been closely involved with China Mobile in developing TD-LTE from the inception of the technology, and successfully demonstrated the first call using the platform more than five years ago, demonstrating HD video delivery over it three years ago. Alcatel-Lucent also showcased TD-LTE to the world during the Shanghai World Expo, another highlight in the journey of TD-LTE from prospect to reality.

Intel to Acquire Sensory Networks for DPI Pattern Matching

Intel agreed to acquire Sensory Networks, a start-up which specializes in pattern matching and acceleration software technology, for approximately US$20 million.

Sensory Networks developed "HyperScan" high-speed, L4-L7 pattern matching software that accelerates deep packet inspection applications running on Intel processors.  The company was founded in Sydney Australia and is headed by Sab Gosal.

In 2012, Sensory reported that its HyperScan library delivers DPI throughput of 160Gbps with linear scalability, based on an intensive benchmark of HyperScan on a dual-socket platform (8-core, 16 threads per socket) using the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family and Intel C604 chipset, scanning against a tier-1 commercial IPS signature set. HyperScan fully scales across Intel architecture, extending from the Intel Atom processor to the highest performing Intel Xeon processor.

Huawei Implements Node Level Vectoring Across 896 Copper Access Lines

Huawei is rolling out a new version of its MA5600T all-in-one broadband access platform with the ability to support vectoring across 896 copper access lines -- more than twice the average line capacity of alternative vectoring systems.

The vectoring system improves line access speeds by adding reverse crosstalk noise to cancel signal noise thus boosting copper access speeds to over 100 Mbps.  Huawei said a special vectoring algorithm, powerful vectoring processing and node level vectoring (NLV) technology, enables its MA5600T to support up to 896 lines. The MA5600T could be deployed at a central office or in an outdoor FTTC cabinet to provide large-capacity vectoring access.

Huawei's MA5600T shares its vectoring service boards with the mid-size MA5603T, further improving the backplane capacity of converged optical and copper access platforms to 8.8 TB. Additionally, MA5600T is compatible with copper-based access boards (including xDSL, POTS, and Combo) and optical fiber–based access boards (including GE, GPON, 10GE, and 10 GPON).

Huawei Appoint Xu as CEO for 6 Month Rotation

Huawei announced the appointment of Mr. Eric Xu as it next rotating CEO.  He will serve as Acting CEO of Huawei from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

Huawei said its rotating CEO acts as the primary person of the company’s operations and crisis management during his tenure and is responsible for convening and chairing the meetings of Board of Directors’ Executive Committee and the company’s Executive Management Team.

In April 2012, Huawei has adopted a rotating CEO model in which which a small group of executives take turns to fulfill CEO duties.   At the time, Mr. Ren Zhengfei said a group of rotating and acting CEOs should be more effective, compared to a single CEO, who is otherwise expected to handle multiple affairs each day. The rotating and acting CEOs take turns leading the company for six months. After the rotational period is over, the non-acting rotating CEOs will still be part of the company's decision-making nucleus. 

Saudi Arabia's Mobily selects Ericsson for 4G/LTE 1800

Etihad Etisalat, Mobily, has selected Ericsson to introduce 4G/LTE 1800 in the Western region of Saudi Arabia and to transform and expand its 2G, 3G network for improved coverage and speed with the delivery of end-to-end network features (radio, core and service layer charging). Financial terms were not disclosed.

"As the uptake of smartphones increases in Saudi Arabia, so does the demand on connectivity and advanced services, and it becomes increasingly important to ensure that the network performs well in order to maintain subscribers’ loyalty," said Ali Eid, Head of Ericsson, Saudi Arabia. Orange Launches LTE Signalling Wholesale Service

Orange introduced a wholesale LTE Signalling service that will allow mobile operators to provide their customers with a 4G roaming service.  The LTE Signalling is delivered through direct connectivity and peering agreements.

LTE Signalling is one of the à la carte services  available through Orange’s Multiservice IP eXchange solution which  provides a high-level of security and quality of service. Orange’s IPX  network offers a large footprint that comprises 30 points of presence  (PoPs) worldwide. It guarantees a packet-loss ratio of less than 0.05%  and jitter inferior to 5ms. LTE Signalling, based on the "Diameter”  signalling protocol, is built on dedicated platforms integrated in  Orange’s cutting-edge IPX network and provides additional security,  interoperability and enhanced routing functions.

Orange confirmed that it has already set-up interconnection agreements with the other major carriers.

HP Intros Data Center Management Tool

HP introduced a management tool for the HP BladeSystem, HP ProLiant Generation 8 (Gen8) and HP ProLiant Generation 7 servers.

HP OneView provides an intuitive user interface and automated intelligence for common data center processes, such as deployment, updating, migrating and troubleshooting.  The company said its tool makes it possible to migrate workloads up to five times faster than with manual operations.

For example, provisioning hypervisors across 16 servers with traditional tools requires two hours and 50 minutes of administrative time, compared to just 14 minutes with HP OneView. The process of retiring a virtual local area network (vLAN) requires only four steps and 30 seconds of administrative time with HP OneView, compared to 480 steps and more than two hours with a traditional tool.(2)

Equinix Opens Second Rio de Janeiro Data Center

Equinix opened a second International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Rio de Janeiro under its subsidiary, ALOG Data Centers of Brazil S.A.

RJ2 its a Tier III data center with a current capacity for 320 cabinets.  Equinix plans to invest an additional $36 million in the next two phases of construction, which will increase capacity to 1,170 cabinets.

Equinix noted that over the last four years it has lined up all the major subsea cable operators including Level 3 and Telefonica, and telecommunications companies serving Brazil. Now these customers are poised to deliver a seamless stream of global data traffic in and out of the country.

In May, Equinix announced GlobeNet's expansion into its Miami data center (MI3) which opened the fastest IP traffic route from the United States to Brazil. MI3 offers a number of benefits to customers, including direct connectivity to the leading Latin American network operators for reduced latency, and close proximity for serving Latin American markets while maintaining infrastructure within the U.S.

NTT Electronics and Acacia Assure 100G Coherent Interoperability

NTT Electronics (NEL) and and Acacia Communications have successfully established an interoperability mode of operation between their next-generation Coherent Digital Signal Processing ASIC's.

"Carriers and service providers require cost-effective pluggable transceivers even beyond the Ethernet reach (~30km) where de-facto 10GBASE-ZR is being used today," said Haruhiko Ichino, NEL Vice President and General Manager of Electronics Device & Systems. Violin Memory Hits Bumps with IPO

Violin Memory raised $162 million in an initial public offering (IPO) of 18 million shares priced at $9 on Friday.

Trading of VMEM on the NYSE closed at $7.02, down 22% for the day.

Violin Memory, which was founded in 2005 and is based in Santa Clara, California, specializes in flash memory arrays for enterprise data centers.

Earlier this month, Violin Memory released a Memory Services software suite for acceleration, tiering, migration and protection of application data in the enterprise data center. 

The Violin Maestro suite of Memory Services, which runs on memory-optimized, hardware-accelerated Violin Memory Appliances, provides non-disruptive migration of data off legacy storage to high performance Violin Memory Arrays. The company said its software transparently learns application I/O patterns and accelerates performance.  The software provides dynamic tiering of application data between Memory Tier and disk storage.

France's Bouygues Telecom Offers fring OTT Service for Voice+SMS over Wi-Fi

Bouygues Telecom is using the fring Over the Top (OTT) service to provide Bouygues customers with free phone calls and SMS on Wi-Fi while abroad.

“Our customers expect high quality, low cost mobile service which, thanks to the fring service, we can now extend beyond local French cellular coverage, allowing subscribers to enjoy international communication as if they were calling from within France,” said Benoît Torloting, Head of digital & B&YOU at Bouygues Telecom. “Leveraging the fring OTT solution, we eliminate cellular network roaming charges and deliver our commitment to quality-cost competitive advantage even when our customers are travelling worldwide.”  Benoît Torloting continued, “Our World & YOU launch was a great success, with an increase in new users and substantial interest from the French market.”

Earlier this month, GENBAND announced its acquisition of fring’s Over-the-Top (OTT) mobile IP communications service for consumers. Financial terms were not disclosed. not disclosed.

The fring app, which is available for both iOS and Android, provides free mobile group video chat, 2-way video chat, voice-only calls and text chat over IP.  GENBAND will offer a white label version that will let service providers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) compete with OTT solutions. fring reduces roaming costs for subscribers by moving voice and video sessions away from radio access networks and routing them over the Internet.

GENBAND said fring white-label solution for the consumer OTT market segment complements its NUViA white-label Unified Communications-as-a-Service (UCaaS) offering.

China Mobile Tops 750 Million Accesses

China Mobile added over 5 million customers in August, bringing it total base to over 750 million accesses for this first time.

AT&T Appoints Beth Mooney to Board

AT&T appointed Beth Mooney to its board of directors. Mooney is chairman and chief executive officer of KeyCorp.

She will serve on the Corporate Development and Finance Committee of AT&T’s board of directors. She joined KeyCorp in 2006 as vice chairman and head of Key Community Bank and served as president, chief operating officer and executive director from 2010 to 2011. KeyCorp is one of the 30 largest U.S. banks, based on assets.

NSN Sees 5G Viability in Authorized Shared Access (ASA) with TD-LTE Spectrum

Nokia Solutions and Networks demonstrated the viability of Authorized Shared Access (ASA) -- a new technology that enables dynamic access to underutilized spectrum frequencies.

NSN describes ASA and spectrum sharing as enabling technology for 5G. The idea is for mobile operators to share frequency bands from other types of incumbent systems, such as government agencies or TV broadcast networks, while guaranteeing quality of service for both.

Earlier this year, NSN and CORE+ consortium took a giant leap forward with the worlds’ first spectrum sharing trial of ASA on a live 2.3GHz TD-LTE network. For the live trial, NSN deployed its network elements in three Finnish cities: commercial Single RAN Flexi MultiRadio 10 Base Stations in Ylivieska, commercial Core Network in Oulu and commercial NetAct network management system in Tampere.

“The benefit of ASA is that it provides both the technology and regulatory framework for sharing spectrum”, said Marc Rouanne, executive vice president, Mobile Broadband at NSN. “Our trial showed that operators can get up to 18% extra bandwidth for mobile broadband networks cost effectively. This technology works with existing LTE and TD-LTE networks and does not require specific software for the end-user devices, making it easy to deploy and transfer the benefit directly to the mobile customers.”

In June 2013, a U.S. Spectrum Policy Team was formed to accelerate spectrum sharing policies and technologies. The Spectrum Policy Team will draft recommendations on how NTIA and FCC can incorporate spectrum sharing into their spectrum management practices to enable more productive uses of spectrum throughout our economy and society and protect the current and future mission capabilities of federal agencies. The team consists of the Chief Technology Officer and the Director of the National Economic Council, along with representatives from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the National Security Staff, and the Council of Economic Advisers.


In July 2012, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) issued a report identifying 1,000 MHz of federal spectrum for sharing with the private sector.

U.S. federal policy should shift in favor "Shared-Use Spectrum Superhighways" instead the current plan which is to first clear federal users from specific bands and then auction this spectrum for the exclusive use of the highest bidder, according to a new report issued by 

A Presidential memorandum issued in June 2010 requires that 500 MHz of spectrum to be made available for commercial use within 10 years.  However, a recent NTIA Study found that clearing just one 95 MHz band will take 10 years, cost $18 billion, and cause significant disruption. Moreover, the net revenue for the Treasury from the last successful auction of 45 MHz realized a net income of just a few hundred million a year ($5.3 billion total).

The PCAST report said its vision of shared spectrum is viable using existing technologies and is not dependent on cognitive or "smart" radios. Instead, a geo-location database could be used the share spectrum much like how the FCC is using managing TV bands. The TV Whitespaces system could be used as a model. Technical standards would need to be implemented for coexistence of transmitters and receivers to enable flexible sharing.

FCC Reviews Wireless Infrastructure Policies for Small Cells and DAS

The FCC will undertake a review of its wireless infrastructure policies with a goal to reduce obstacles to obtaining access to rights-of-way and locations for wireless facilities.

Specifically, the FCC is seeking comment on:


  • Streamlining the environmental and historic preservation review processes for newer technologies, including small cells and distributed antenna systems;

  • Removing barriers to the deployment of temporary towers, that are used in cases of emergencies or to add capacity during short term events;
  • The meaning of terms included in a provision of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 which states "a State or local government may not deny, and shall approve, any eligible facilities request for a modification of an existing wireless tower or base station that does not substantially change the physical dimensions of such tower or base station;" and
  • Clarification of issues addressed in the Commission's "shot clock" order which set time periods for state and local governments to complete review of wireless siting applications. 

The FCC said increasing certainty in its processes and removing barriers to infrastructure deployment will spur public and private investment, while expanding wireless coverage and capacity.

FCC Acting Chairwoman Mignon L. Clyburn stated: "Today, we seek comment on how we can change our processes to encourage greater deployment of new technologies such as small cells and Distributed Antenna Systems. These innovative solutions multiply wireless capacity within existing spectrum resources and can be deployed relatively easily and inexpensively by consumers, enterprise users, and service providers. These newer technologies can be deployed on utility poles, street lamps, water towers, or rooftops -- a big reason why they are becoming more common. The time is ripe for the Commission to look at updating our rules for these new technologies."

FCC to Require Mobile Operators to Disclose Network Availability after Disasters

The FCC is proposing new rules that would require wireless service providers to publicly disclose the
percentage of cell sites within their networks that are operational during and immediately after disasters. 

The FCC said its goal is to provide consumers with a yardstick for comparing wireless performance in emergencies. The rules also seek to encourage competition in the wireless industry to improve network reliability. 

The FCC's proposal would require wireless service providers to submit to the FCC, for public disclosure on 
a daily basis during and immediately after disasters, the percentage of operational cell sites for each county 
within a designated disaster area.

Broadcom Intros 802.11ac/Bluetooth Chips for Connected Car

Broadcom introduced a new line of wireless chips for automotive infotainment applications.

The new product line, which initially consists of two chips, use use IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Smart Ready technology to allow drivers and passengers to sync and stream content from mobile devices to the car's infotainment system and rear-seat displays. Rogers Communications and Sprint announced a partnership to offer in-car infotainment and telematics service to Canadians.

Auto manufacturers deploying Sprint Velocity in Canada will leverage Rogers’ wireless networks to connected vehicles on the road.

Telstra Launches Network Services In India

Telstra Global is now offering International Private Line (IPL), Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) services via international gateways installed at Mumbai and Chennai.

Two key new product lines available to customers in India are:

IPL Services -- dedicated point-to-point links between two key business locations, ensuring security and reliability of voice, video and data communications. Telstra Global’s IPL offering enables customers to control and manage their own networking routing, protocols and security. There is a wide range of bandwidth options available for this service.

Gogo In-flight Wi-Fi Now on 2,000 Commercial Aircraft

Gogo hit a major milestone by installing its 2000th commercial aircraft with its in-flight Internet service.

Out of the 2,000 aircraft installed with Gogo's in-flight Internet service, more than 300 have now been equipped with the company's next generation service – ATG-4 – that increases peak bandwidth to the aircraft by more than three times Gogo's original service.  The company expects to have more than 500 Gogo equipped aircraft outfitted with ATG-4 by the end of this year.

  • Earlier this month, Gogo announced plans to deploy a proprietary, hybrid Ground-to-Orbit architecture by the second half of next year that would combine existing satellite technologies with its Air to Ground (ATG) cellular network.  The technology will use satellite for receive only (transmission to the plane) and Gogo's Air to Ground network for the return link (transmission to the ground).  Gogo will be utilizing a Ku antenna developed specifically for receive only functionality.


Fujitsu Boosts Energy Efficiency in Base Station Power Amplifier

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a circuit technology that enables industry-leading electrical efficiency for wireless transmission power amplifiers used in radio-frequency wireless devices, such as mobile phone base stations.

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a compact, low-loss power combining circuit along with a high-precision phase error compensation technology based on digital signal processing. These technologies enable high-efficiency transmissions across more than 95% of the transmission duration, compared with 65% for existing amplifiers. In addition, Fujitsu Laboratories succeeded at developing a prototype transmitter power amplifier with a peak output power of 100 W. This development improved average electrical efficiency during transmission, from the current rate of around 50%, to 70%(2).

Fujitsu said its new technology will help pave the way toward lower energy consumption for mobile phone base stations and other radio-frequency wireless equipment.

Ericsson's Minimalist Radio Dot System Aims to Open Small Cell Market

+Ericsson is looking to open up the small cell market with the introduction of  its Radio Dot System, a disk-shaped remote antenna element about the size of a hockey puck.

The Ericsson Radio Dot is connected via standard Category 5/6/7 Ethernet cabling to a indoor base station.  The Dot delivers 3G and 4G LTE for indoor users using 2X 100 milliwatt output power.  Up to 96 of the dots could be connected to a single base station.  The compact dots can be mounted to ceilings or walls and use Power-over-Ethernet.  As such, it serves as an alternative to distributed antenna systems (DAS) or single-element, broadband-connected femtocells.

Ericsson said its unique Radio Dot System leverages the same technology in its macro base stations, including cell coordination and self-organizing networking capabilities. The company believes that the unit's small size and simplicity of installation will make it far easier and cheaper for carriers to deploy. The design incorporates 14 patents.

Ericsson Radio Dot System supports integration with Ericsson's carrier Wi-Fi portfolio enabling features such as real-time traffic steering to ensure the best user experience across both Wi-Fi and 3GPP networks. Additional Wi-Fi capability, as well as multi-carrier / multi-frequency support are also planned.  FDD-LTE is initially supported with TD-LTE versions on the way.

Johan Wibergh, head of Ericsson Business Unit Networks, says: "With the Radio Dot System we lower the threshold to building indoor coverage. The dot is the most cost-effective, no-compromise solution to the indoor coverage challenges expressed by our customers. It is ultra-small but can scale to virtually unlimited capacity; it is easy to install, future proof and it is 100 percent integrated with existing mobile networks."

Speaking at the Ericsson Analyst Forum in Santa Clara, California, Kris Rinne, Senior Vice President, Network and Product Planning, AT&T Services, said: "Small cells are a key component of AT&T's Project VIP network enhancement program as we seek to constantly improve our customers' mobile Internet experience. Delivering a great wireless experience indoors can present both technical and logistical challenges. A solution like the Ericsson Radio Dot System gives AT&T another tool to choose from in its next-generation toolkit."

The product is expected to be commercially available in late 2014.

Ericsson: Expect 5G Network-Society Technologies by 2020

With 4G LTE rollouts now underway by dozens of operators worldwide, interest is building in what comes beyond the LTE-Advanced standards.

Speaking at the Ericsson Analyst Forum in Santa Clara, California,  Ulf Ewaldsson, Ericsson's CTO, said 5G is just a research concept at the moment and any vendor claims about having the technology in the labs is hype.  5G research projects underway in Europe and China are seeking to outline the requirements for 5G, not developing standards yet.  Spectrum constraints are a reality that limits what can be practically deployed.

So what does Ericsson think could be possible with 5G?

Ewaldsson said don't expect 5G just to be a really fast radio specification.  He envisions 5G as a suite of technologies for enabling the network society. Some things that might be achievable: 10 Gbps radios in the downlink, ultra-dense cells, extremely low latency at 1-2ms, end-to-end Quality of Experience control from the cloud to the device,  and massive scale.

Ewaldsson would also like to see 5G as complementary technologies to existing networks, especially taking advantage of the programmability and virtualization currently being built into the next wave of cloud-enabled platforms.

Ewaldsson said the timeline for 5G standardization suggests commercialization by around 2020, although many operators will want to leverage these technologies as they become available.

Nuage Introduces Virtualized Services Gateway

Alcatel-Lucent's Nuage Networks venture has enhanced its Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) with a high performance gateway called the 7850 Virtualized Services Gateway (VSG) that provides an alternative for companies with a significant investment in non-virtualized assets who want to leverage automation and control across their virtualized and non-virtualized infrastructures.

Nuage said its 7850 VSG allows CIOs to establish policies to be instantiated and enforced across all of the company’s assets, within and across private and shared data center facilities, regardless of whether the servers or appliances are virtualized.

The 7850 VSG delivers a terabit of capacity in a single rack unit with full switching and routing capabilities. It provides a high-performance gateway for large multi-tenanted datacenter environments and colocation sites.

The unit is currently in trials and is expected to be commercially available later this year (Q4 2013).

SK Telecom and NSN Test Liquid Applications over LTE

SK Telecom and Nokia Solutions and Networks are testing Liquid Applications over LTE.

NSN defines Liquid Applications as those can take advantage of a base station's close proximity to end users to enhance the overall experience.  At the heart of Liquid Applications is the Nokia Siemens Networks Radio Application Cloud Server (RACS), which integrates cloud technology and service creation capabilities, running on standard IT middleware, in the base station.

After the installation of Liquid Applications into the SK Telecom laboratories at the end of June, testing was conducted during a three-month period, with a view to showing how Liquid Applications provided greater context for personalizing services and enabling the simple subscriber tariffs that SK Telecom offers for data-centric applications and services.

NSN said successful testing was conducted with three advanced services over LTE: location-based mobile advertising, augmented reality and premium application delivery.

“We are pleased to be working closely with our longstanding partner NSN on this proof-of-concept project. With Liquid Applications, we expect to create an enriched Service Aware RAN environment that brings greater benefits to our customers through intelligent and personalized services,” said Choi Jin-sung, executive vice president and head of ICT R&D Center of SK Telecom.

Brazil's OptiTel Deploys ADVA

Brazilian carrier, OptiTel, is using +ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 3000 platform to to gradually develop a full agile core network that will include 100G transport, ROADM technology and a GMPLS control plane. The ADVA FSP 3000 was selected for its single-fiber working (SFW), which is the ability to transmit and receive data on the same fiber. The network is being deployed by long-term partner Syncom Telecom Solutions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

A key competitive advantage for OptiTel is its 4000km of fiber connecting the provinces of Rio Grande Do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo. The focus here is on corporate customers and the delivery of services to other carriers.

Cisco Positions Network Convergence System as SuperCore Fabric

+Cisco unveiled its flagship Network Convergence System (NCS) core routing fabric designed to bring scalability, open programmability, and IP/Optical integration to power the Internet of Everything.

The Cisco NCS family serves as network fabric and orchestration system uniting the Cisco Carrier Routing System (CRS) and Aggregation Services Router (ASR) product lines.  It can be deployed as part of the Cisco ONE Service Provider Architecture, which embraces and extends SDN/NFV. The NCS family leverages several innovations:

Programmable Silicon: The NCS features the recently announced Cisco nPower X1 integrated network processor, which is also used in the CRS-X.  The nPower X1 packs 336 cores and 4 billion transistors on a single chip.  It also features new memory technology , the nPower X1 implementation achieves
unprecedented levels of performance, functionality, programmability and scale for a network processor.

Intelligent Convergence for Optimization and Simplification: The Cisco NCS converges IP and optical networks and is designed to seamlessly integrate with the Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS) and the Dynamic Fabric Automation capabilities supported by Cisco's data center innovations. This convergence capability enables the NCS to act as a flexible foundational network fabric for an evolved programmable network, able to shift and redirect data center, core, edge and optical resources spontaneously and in real time, allowing service providers to accelerate service velocity while reducing overall complexity and operating costs.

Advanced Virtualization Capabilities: The NCS's element, system and architectural virtualization capabilities converge to enable the system to orchestrate services and resources across disparate physical, virtual and geographical elements as if they are part of a single unified system using Cisco Prime and Cisco Quantum solutions. The system's advanced virtualization features enable service providers to elastically scale up and down both network and compute resources, utilizing scalable multichassis configurations that can be managed as a single entity. If system scale is exceeded in one part of the network, the NCS moves control plane functions onto UCS servers in the data center, creating virtually unlimited control plane scale by capitalizing on the blade servers' processing.

The Cisco NCS family consists of three key components that can be managed as a single integrated system for business agility and simplified operations:

NCS 6000 -- the flagship router boasts the ability to transport up to 5 Tbps per slot and 1.2 Pbps per system.  By using its 100 Gbps,CMOS-based CPAK transceivers Cisco is delivering the first 1 Tbps line card. Each line card runs up to 1 Tbps throughput, using a mix of 10, 40, or 100 Gbps interfaces per card.  Significantly, the NCS 6000 will run virtualized IOS-XR instances while supporting hardware-enabled true zero-packet, zero-topology loss (ZPL/ZTL) In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU).  This will enable lossless software image updates.  Thanks to the CMOS silicon photonics and new network processor, Cisco said the NCS 6000 will achieve the lowest carbon footprint in service provider routing . The NCS 6000 is currently shipping.

NCS 4000 --  bridges the gap between the IP and optical layers with time division multiplexing (TDM), packet switching, and integrated DWDM functionality. It will support 400 Gbps per slot and 6.4 Terabits per system and be available in single, back-to-back, and multi-chassis configurations.  It will offer full optical channel data unit (ODU-0) level switching, with ports supporting SONET/SDH, Ethernet, and channelized OTN Full IP, MPLS, MPLS-Transport Profile (TP), and Carrier Ethernet switching, supporting 10 Gb, 40 Gb, and 100 Gb Ethernet interfaces with the option of OTN encapsulation. The NCS 4000 will be available in the first half of 2014.

NCS 2000 -- a DWDM transport platform that evolves the Cisco ROADM portfolio by introducing 96-channel nLight ROADM technology.  It offers touchless re-configurability through colorless, omni-directional, and contention-less add/drop, networks.  The NCS 2000 introduces hybrid Raman-EDFA amplifiers known as erbium doped Raman amplifiers (EDRA).  The NCS 2000 is currently shipping.

The three platforms are designed to work as a single, integrated system.

Earlier this month, +Cisco unveiled its nPower X1 integrated network processor -- the first generation of a new line of custom-developed silicon designed for programmatically handling high volumes of transactions at high data rates.

Cisco said its nPower X1 is purpose-built for software-defined networking (SDN), enabling on-the-fly reprogramming for new levels of service agility and simplified network operation.  


Key features include:
  • 400 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) throughput to enable multi-terabit network performance.  All packet processing, traffic management and input/output functions are integrated on a single nPower X1 and operate at high performance and scale.
  • Highest-performing programmable control designed to seamlessly handle hundreds of millions of unique transactions per second.  The nPower's industry-leading processing architecture is purpose built for machine-driven events and ultra-high-definition video applications.
  • 4 billion transistors on a single chip for performance, functionality, programmability, and scale.
  • Enables solutions with eight times the throughput and one quarter the power per bit compared with Cisco's previous industry-leading network processor. 
In March 2013, Cisco introduced its 100 Gbps, CMOS-based transceiver technology  -- describing it as a breakthrough for the rollout of 100G services.
By integrating advanced optics in complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, Cisco is able to significantly increase face-plate density for 100G pluggable optics.

The Cisco "CPAK" transceiver reduces space and power requirements by over 70 percent compared with alternative transceiver form factors, such as CFP. Future routing and switching line cards will also incorporate CPAK technology.




AT&T Plans an LTE-Broadcast Service

One year after the launch of its Project VIP network upgrade program, the network is hitting "best-in-class" performance levels for reliability, speed and wireless network coverage, said Randall Stephenson, +AT&T 's Chairman, CEO and President, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference.

Some notes from the presentation:
  • The consumer fixed line business is growing steadily at 2-3% and will soon hit 10 million broadband IP subscribers.
  • U-verse is now a $1 billion per month revenue stream and it's growing nearly 30% year-over-year.
  • Small business IP broadband is also growing well.
  • In NYC, more that half of mobile traffic is already on the LTE network.
  • AT&T is seeing great sales growth for tablets.
  • Strategic business services is now an $8 billion per year revenue stream.
  • Digital Life, which is automating the home and providing security services, has seen the use of video cameras to be the No.1 attachment.
  • The Connected Car is a key area of interest and relationships are being signed by the major manufacturers.
  • AT&T is close to signing a deal for the sale of tower assets. The deal could include about 10,000 towers out of about 70,000 towers in its portfolio. The sale is an opportunity to monetize some assets, much like selling the company's administrative real estate.
  • AT&T will continue to Cricket brand for pre-paid mobile service.
  • AT&T's pension plans are close to being fully funded.
  • The video opportunity is significant. Over 50% of traffic on the IP network is now video.  OTT is a key player for AT&T too. AT&T's network focus is now about delivering video.
  • AT&T is preparing to launch an LTE-Broadcast service that will use 700 MHz licenses that were acquired from Qualcomm.  No timeline was provided.

New Consortium Targets 400 Gbps Hot Pluggable Modules

A new consortium has been formed to define specifications and promote the adoption of interoperable 400 Gbps hot pluggable modules.

Founding members of the CDFP MSA include: Avago Technologies, Brocade, IBM, JDSU, Juniper Networks, Molex Incorporated and TE Connectivity.

The companies said the project scope will be to specify electrical interfaces, mechanical interfaces, and software interfaces, which may include optical connector and mating fiber optic cable plug, electrical connector, guide rail, front panel and host PCB layout requirements. Additionally, the CDFP MSA specification is expected to include thermal, electromagnetic and electrostatic discharge design recommendations, all significant factors when creating standards.



IBM and Deutsche Telekom Launch Mobile App Cloud Service

+IBM and +Deutsche Telekom AG announced a collaboration to provide the IBM MobileFirst platform in the cloud to small and medium sized (SMB) customers in Europe.

Deutsche Telekom's developer platform - Developer Garden - has launched the new cloud service, Developer Garden powered IBM Worklight, which allows developers to cost-effectively and quickly create apps for all mobile platforms and bring them to market faster. The new service provides developers with access to Deutsche Telekom's Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and communication services and expertise. Developer Garden users will be able to quickly access IBM Worklight capabilities to develop, run and manage HTML5, hybrid and native apps that combine Deutsche Telekom's communication features such as speech-driven Interactive Voice Response (IVR), voice mashups and Short Message Service (SMS).   

Some examples: 
  • A retailer can increase customer retention by integrating geo-location capabilities from IBM Worklight and Deutsche Telekom's SMS API into its mobile app.
  • A customer can opt in for retailers to be notified when they are in close proximity to a physical store and receive customized promotions for same-day in-store purchases.
  • A hotel can improve customer service by using these same opt in capabilities to be alerted when premium guests are nearby. This mobile feature can minimize a guest's time waiting in long check-in lines, ensure their room is ready and specific requests are met to enhance their experience with the brand.
"The collaboration between IBM and Deutsche Telekom Developer Garden enables us to offer new business models in the area of mobile app development and to unlock new value for our customers," said Rainer Deutschmann, senior vice president, Core Telco Products of Deutsche Telekom.
