Cisco Integrates ACI with FirePOWER Intrusion Prevention

Cisco is integrating its FirePOWER Next Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) into its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) architecture.

The integrated ACI + firePOWER security solution, which will be available in June 2015, offers automated threat protection to combat emerging data center security threats. The idea is fine-grained control (including application level security), visibility and centralized automation all the way from infrastructure to the application level.

Cisco ACI also third-party ecosystem solutions from Check Point Software Technologies, Fortinet, Infoblox, Intel Security, Radware, and Symantec.

Cisco said ACI integration with FirePOWER NGIPS (including Advanced Malware Protection) provides security before, during and after an attack, enabling organizations to dynamically detect and block advanced threats with continuous visibility and control across the full attack continuum. These new security capabilities deliver unprecedented control, visibility and centralized security automation in the data center.

Cisco also announced that independent qualified security assessors have validated ACI for deployment in payment card industry (PCI) compliant networks. Managing and simplifying the scope of compliance can help reduce costs for these organizations.

XO Interconnects with Microsoft Azure through Equinix Cloud Exchange

XO Communications (XO) introduced direct links to Microsoft Azure through the Equinix Cloud Exchange.

XO now offers its customers dedicated connections to Azure at bandwidths of 200 Mbps, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps in Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in the Washington, D.C., area and Silicon Valley. Enterprises choosing 1 Gbps connectivity to the Azure platform also have the option of leveraging the XO Bandwidth on Demand service with usage-based billing and bandwidth commit rates ranging from 100-500 Mbps.

AT&T Completes Acquisition of Nextel Mexico

AT&T completed its previously announced acquisition of Nextel Mexico from NII Holdings for $1.875 billion, less approximately $427 million of net debt and other adjustments. The deal includes spectrum licenses, network assets, retail stores and subscribers in Mexico.

Earlier this year, AT&T acquired Mexican wireless provider Iusacell. AT&T will integrate Iusacell and Nextel into one company focused on bringing more choices, better service and faster mobile Internet speeds to more locations throughout Mexico. AT&T plans to create the first-ever North American Mobile Service area, which will cover more than 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States.

Thaddeus Arroyo, Chief Executive Officer for AT&T Mexico, LLC and Iusacell, will lead the combined company.

Boingo Signs Sprint for Airport Wi-Fi

Boingo Wireless announced a multi-year Wi-Fi agreement for providing Sprint customers with access to seamless and secure Boingo Wi-Fi networks in 35 major U.S. airports.

Sprint devices within proximity of a Boingo hotspot can automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network seamlessly, providing service at the fastest speeds available, be that cellular from Sprint or Wi-Fi from Boingo. The auto-authenticating Wi-Fi connections are available at no additional charge to all Sprint customers with capable devices, and usage while connected to Wi-Fi does not count towards a customer’s monthly service plan.

Amdocs to Acquire Comverse's BSS Unit for $272 Million

Amdocs agreed to acquire a substantial majority of Comverse's business support systems (BSS) business unit assets for approximately $272 million in cash.

Amdocs said it will maintain and support Comverse customers around the world. The acquisition geographically complements Amdocs' market focus by expanding and diversifying Amdocs' global customer base, particularly in Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe, and including Europe's cable and satellite market.

Midcontinent Communications has deployed the Infinera DTN-X packet optical transport networking platform in its Upper Midwest service area of the United States to deliver cable television, high-speed Internet and telecom services to its customers.

IEEE 802.3 Amends Ethernet Standard for 4 x 25Gbps Lanes

IEEE announced the availability of 802.3bm, IEEE Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps Operation Over Fiber Optic Cables.

The amendment reduces “lane count” for 100 Gbps applications (from 10 lanes at 10 Gbps each to four lanes at 25 Gbps each),  expands the reach for 40 Gbps services to 40 kilometers and expands Energy Efficient Ethernet capability to include optical links.

IEEE said these modifications to the 802.3 standard for Ethernet are driven by a number of advances in optical networking, enabling migration to higher-density applications, reducing cost and power demand of 100 Gbps devices and simplified metropolitan services.

“Significantly higher Ethernet performance, capacity and reach in optical networking are needed especially inside and among data centers across metropolitan areas, given the ongoing proliferation of smartphones, video-on-demand, cloud computing and other bandwidth-intensive applications such as the Internet of Things,” said Dan Dove, chair of the IEEE P802.3bm Task Force and chief consultant with Dove Networking Solutions. “The project to develop IEEE 802.3bm addressed these market needs through a globally open, collaborative effort that drew contributions from a broad spectrum of engineers and end users across the Ethernet ecosystem.”

“The rapid growth of Internet traffic is driving the need for higher data rates, higher density and lower-cost fiber optic solutions for the data center,” said David Law, chair of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group and distinguished engineer with HP Networking. “IEEE 802.3bm demonstrates how IEEE 802.3 is taking a forward-thinking approach to stay ahead of global demands on Ethernet networking, which paves the way for innovation in devices and services.”

HP Unveils Campus Switching Modules Optimized for SDN

HP unveiled new campus networking solutions and services including new switching modules powered by the 6th generation HP Networking ASIC, purpose built for SDN.

HP says its new chip delivers more than four times the performance of competitive solutions and three times lower latency.Its two terabits per second backplane supports increased bandwidth and performance requirements including high speed wireless connectivity.

The HP 5400R zl2 Switch Series v3 Modules fully support OpenFlow and can process up to 24 times more flows than it main competitor.The modules also offer programmable OpenFlow processing pipelines and ten parallel Advanced Packet Processor engines with dedicated resources provide scalability and flexibility to support the new wave of SDN applications.

Other key features of the 5400R v3 modules include HP Smart Rate multi-gigabit ports for supporting the next wave of high-speed 802.11 ac Wave 2 access points. The HP Smart Rate technology offers simple self-negotiating and flexible capacity from 1GbE, 2.5 GbE, 5 GbE to 10GbE with Power over Ethernet +.

In addition, HP is introducing a Network Visualizer SDN application that provides IT administrators with real-time detailed visibility of the network to monitor traffic flow and investigate issues. Administrators can identify user complaints without having to identify physical location or IP address, by centering visibility on the user experience rather than the physical network. The increased visibility afforded by SDN technology allows for rapid diagnosis and repair of network issues, without requiring additional costly overlay appliances or probes.

HP also announced enhancements to its HP Network Optimizer SDN application, which offers automated provisioning of network policy and Quality of Service  to ensure an enhanced user experience. The app now offers media path optimization as well as dynamic traffic periodization based on user or device. Other business applications will also be able to take full advantage of HP Network Optimizer through open API integration.

IBM Announces Two Breakthroughs for Quantum Computing

Researchers at IBM have demonstrated for the first time the ability to detect and measure the two types of quantum errors (bit-flip and phase-flip) that will occur in any real quantum computer. The researchers have also shown a new, square quantum bit circuit design that could scale to larger dimensions.

“Quantum computing could be potentially transformative, enabling us to solve problems that are impossible or impractical to solve today," said Arvind Krishna, senior vice president and director of IBM Research. “While quantum computers have traditionally been explored for cryptography, one area we find very compelling is the potential for practical quantum systems to solve problems in physics and quantum chemistry that are unsolvable today. This could have enormous potential in materials or drug design, opening up a new realm of applications.”

Telefónica Selects NetCracker for BSS in 7 Countries

Telefónica has selected NetCracker to transform its BSS platforms for wireless and fixed services in seven Latin American countries. This large-scale, multi-phase BSS and customer experience transformation program encompasses replacing existing billing systems and implementing new product catalog, ordering and omni-channel CRM platforms. The NetCracker BSS solution will support all customers and service offerings for seven LATAM operators. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“NetCracker’s pre-integrated BSS suite will enable our organization to improve customer experience and reduce time-to-market,” said Phil Jordan, Group CIO at Telefónica. “NetCracker’s implementation methodology will also help us standardize our systems and processes across multiple operators.”

Broadcom Intros 5G WiFi Wave 2 Silicon

Broadcom introduced a new family of 5G WiFi Wave 2 solutions for enterprise wireless access points (APs).

Broadcom's expanded portfolio includes the BCM43465 (4x4 11ac MU-MIMO) and BCM43525 (3x3 11ac MU-MIMO) for high-performance access points. Sampling is underway.

The BCM43465 chip supports 2.2Gbps and four concurrent MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input, multiple output) devices. MU-MIMO combined with 160MHz enables devices to fully utilize available bandwidth to deliver more than 2x the performance.

The new chips are further enhanced by NitroQAM technology, Broadcom's 1024-QAM modulation scheme, which gives up to a 25 percent throughput boost over 802.11ac's 256-QAM. In addition, by using a powerful Digital Signal Processing (DSP) based architecture, Broadcom's silicon can perform advanced spectrum capture, analysis and classification right on the chip without impacting performance. Broadcom's Advanced Spectrum Capture Engine (AsCE) allows the chip to identify non-Wi-Fi interference and adjust accordingly, delivering improved reliability and quality.

Alcatel-Lucent Selected for Algeria-Spain Undersea Cable

The Algerian Ministry of Post, Information Technology and Communications has awarded a contract to Alcatel-Lucent for the deployment of the Orval system, an over 560 km fiber-optic undersea cable that will link Oran in Algeria to Valencia, Spain.

The 100 Gbps system, which is expected to come online in 2016, will deliver an ultimate design capacity of 20 Tbps.

Alcatel-Lucent will be lead contractor in charge of designing and manufacturing the system in consortium with IT Marine who will be responsible for marine operations.

Verizon Names Five Vendors for SDN

Verizon named five technology partners for its software-defined architecture: Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper Networks and Nokia Networks.

"Verizon and our key technology partners have always focused on providing high-performance networks for our customers, and with this SDN architecture we will continue to ensure our network and services meet the needs of our customers, today and in the future," stated Roger Gurnani, Verizon chief information and technology architect.

Verizon said its SDN-based architecture will drive a number of key customer facing benefits, including elastic, scalable, network-wide service creation and near real-time service delivery.

To enable its network vision, Verizon and its technology vendors have co-authored a comprehensive SDN network architecture document, which includes all interface specifications and reference architectures plus requirements for both the control layer and forwarding box functions. This network architecture document will enable Verizon's key technology partners to develop solutions to achieve the business and technical benefits of an SDN-enabled network.

Dell's 13th Gen PowerEdge Servers Pack 6 TB of RAM, Eight PCIe SSDs

Dell introduced its 13th generation PowerEdge servers including its most powerful PowerEdge R930 designed for demanding enterprise applications such as in-memory databases, customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP).

Dell noted that the global x86 server market has grown more than 600 percent since it first introduced the PowerEdge portfolio roughly 20 years ago, while the non-x86 market has been on a constant decline – shrinking 70 percent between 2000 and 2013. Even with the declines, the non-x86 market presents a $9.1 billion (USD) addressable market in 2015.

The PowerEdge R930 features the future Intel Xeon processor E7-8800/4800 v3 product families, 6TB of memory in 96 DIMMs, 24 internal hard drives and support for up to eight high performance PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs.

Dell was the first to ship NVMe PCIe SSDs and it’s now offering the new 3.2TB PCIe SSD. Dell PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs deliver ultra-high performance, front loading, hot pluggable 2.5-inch devices, providing up to 10 times more input /output operations per second (IOPS) over traditional SSDs.

In addition to the PowerEdge R930 rack server, Dell is updating its PowerEdge VRTX and PowerEdge M1000e converged platforms, and introducing the PowerEdge FC830 and the PowerEdge M830 blade server as part of Dell’s 13th generation of PowerEdge servers.

Cavium Demos 48-core, ARMv8-A ThunderX_NT Processor

At this week's Interop in Las Vegas, Cavium is demonstrating its 48-core, dual-socket capable ThunderX_NT family of ARMv8-A based processors with integrated security, networking and virtual flow accelerators.

Cavium said its ThunderX_NT-based platforms are well suited for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) applications, such as virtual application delivery controller (vADC), virtual unified threat management (vUTM), virtual router (vRouter), and virtual wireless LAN controllers (vWLANs).  The design offers a large number of cores, integrated standard low latency Ethernet fabric, 10/40/100 GbE networking, end-to-end virtualization enabled through virtSoC technology, and integrated accelerators for packet processing, security, deep packet inspection and virtualization.

Oracle Launched Evolved Communications Application Server

Oracle is introducing an Evolved Communications Application Server for service providers that supports enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity for delivering Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services even when widespread LTE network coverage isn’t available.

Communication Service Providers can configure and extend out-of-the-box VoLTE and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) applications without coding or having to rely on costly vendor customization, enabling them to develop and deliver rich media services more quickly and cost-effectively, while also assuring reliability.

The communications application server offers a network function virtualization (NFV)-enabled environment for VoLTE and VoWi-Fi applications, and is designed to permit virtualization and management by a virtual network function (VNF) manager. The solution also provides automated deployment capabilities across testing, staging, and production environments equating to greater service agility and velocity for CSPs.

Dell SonicWALL TZ Analyzes Encrypted SSL Traffic

Dell introduced new SonicWALL TZ Series firewalls with the ability to analyze encrypted SSL traffic, and an integrated wireless controller.

The new TZ firewalls, which are aimed at small businesses and large, multi-site distributed organizations, leverages multi-core security processors for high-performance Unified Threat Management (UTM).

The company cites intrusion prevention speeds of up to 1.1Gbps. Offering 1GbE network interfaces in a compact desktop form-factor appliance, the Dell SonicWALL TZ Series delivers anti-malware protection, intrusion prevention, content and URL filtering, application control, and secure mobile access for laptops, smartphones and tablets. With the SonicWALL Mobile Connect unified client, the new TZs provide secure mobile access to Google Android, Mac OS X, Kindle Fire and laptop users. The integrated, secure wireless controller in the new TZ Series supports the high-speed 802.11ac wireless standard.

Dell said the patented reassembly-free deep packet inspection engine allows the SonicWALL TZ Series to scan every byte of every packet on all ports and protocols with almost zero latency.

China Telecom Reports Dip in Q1

China Telecom reported 1Q2015 operating revenues of RMB81,453 million, representing a decrease of 2.1% over the same period of last year. Service revenues were RMB72,704 million, representing a decrease of 0.4% over the same period oflast year.  EBITDA was RMB24,525 million, representing a decrease of 2.2% over the same period of last year.

China Telecom added 3.20 million net mobile users in Q1, giving it a total base of 189 million. The carrier was granted an LTE FDD license in February and is planning a quick rollout. Meanwhile, the number of traditional fixed line connections continues to decline.

Metaswitch Picks Radisys’ vMRF for Clearwater IMS

Metaswitch Networks has selected Radisys’ virtualized Media Resource Function (vMRF) to power its cloud-based IMS solution.

Radisys’ vMRF, pre-integrated with OpenCloud’s Rhino Telecom Application Server, is being resold by Metaswitch as part of its Clearwater IMS solution that helps service providers accelerate the transformation of their network and communication services.

“Mobile operators are embracing IMS as the foundation of their LTE networks so they can be flexible enough to provide a complete portfolio of immersive IP-based multimedia communications services,” said Paul Drew, senior vice president, Metaswitch Networks. “As Metaswitch helps its customers continue down a path towards a software-centric, cloud-based, all-IP future, we are pleased to work with Radisys as they share our overall vision and have been a leading provider of IP Media Processing and MRF products for more than 10 years.”

Lightower to Acquire Fibertech, Extending Footprint

Lightower Fiber Networks agreed to acquire Fibertech Networks, a leading provider of fiber-optic based network services throughout mid-size cities in the eastern and central regions of the United States, for $1.9 billion in cash.


The combined company will own and operate over 30,000 route miles of fiber network providing access to nearly 5,000 wireless towers and almost 13,000 on-net service locations, including commercial buildings, data centers, financial exchanges, content hubs and other critical communications facilities.

Lightower’s existing financial backers, Berkshire Partners, Pamlico Capital and ABRY Partners, will each provide additional equity to support the transaction.

OpenCloud Connect - Faster Standards for Cloud Services

Dell Intros New Open Data Center Switches

Dell Networking introduced three new open switches for data centers and featuring support for the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) to allow for a zero-touch install of all pre-qualified operating systems, including Dell Networking OS9 and third party options.


Dell said the rollout reinforces its strategy to pursue open architectures in the new era of software-defined data centers.

"These advancements are another example of Dell helping our customers to future proof and accelerate the financial and performance rewards the software-defined data center promises," said Arpit Joshipura, vice president, product management and strategy, Dell Networking. "The new products announced today offer customers complete flexibility to take advantage of open networking environments and new computing models as well as the revenue streams these network infrastructures will allow."

The rollout includes:

Dell Networking Z9100-ON - a 100GbE fabric switch in a 1RU fixed form factor for aggregation and access layers. It and offers multi-rate switching (10/25/40/50/100GbE). The Z9100 is designed for cloud, HPC and Web 2.0 applications that require a range of options in switching rates in high-density environments and excels in Big Data analysis and where high performance, low latency requirements exist. The fabric switch offers up to seven times the density per RU versus a competing switch.1

Dell Networking S4048-ON - a low-latency 10/40GbE Top-of-Rack (ToR) switch designed for the software-defined data center. It offers advanced features supporting large hardware tables, VXLAN and expanding buffering. It is designed for Web and Cloud service providers with Linux and open source-heavy environments. The S4048 provides a low latency 10GbE switching in HPC and business sensitive deployments that require the highest bandwidth and low latency, while cutting in half the latency versus a competing switch.

Dell Networking S3048-ON - designed for enterprise and mid-market customers with an existing 1GbE installed base. It is Dell’s first entry into 1GbE open networking switching. The S3048 is a ToR equipped with next-generation 1GbE silicon, a complete OS9 feature set including VLT, OpenFlow, Open Automation, Cloud Stack integration with OpenStack, Microsoft, VMware, Docker and others, while offering up to half the power consumption and costs up to 50 percent less than the current generation of Dell 1GbE switches.

Dell today also announced IP Infusion, Inc. as a new ecosystem partner in support of its Open Networking initiative.

Open Switches for SDN Data Centers

Facebook is adding video calling in Messenger, enabling face-to-face calling on iOS or Android devices.

The service is initially available in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the UK, the US and Uruguay.

Apple Confirms $2 Billion Investment in European Data Centers

On its quarterly conference call, Apple confirmed plans to invest $2 billion on data centers in Ireland and Denmark. These will be Apple's largest data centers in the world and will be 100% powered by renewable energy.

The company notes that 100% of it U.S. operations and 87% of global operations are running on renewable energy.

CloudBridge Debuts Virtual WAN Link Aggregation

Citrix announced its "CloudBridge Virtual WAN Edition", which allows enterprises to create a virtualized WAN by bonding multiple network services such as MPLS, broadband, mobile and satellite Internet links together to maximize WAN capacity and reliability. The Citrix CloudBridge Virtual WAN constantly assesses the performance of paths within the virtualized WAN to instantaneously and automatically adapt to changing network conditions.

The solution extends the company's existing CloudBridge appliances and integrates with the company’s HDX and application acceleration technologies.

The CloudBridge Virtual WAN will be generally available as a new software edition on select CloudBridge appliances in Q2 2015. Additionally, virtual appliances and versions for third party cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services, will be available in Q3 2015.

Thoma Bravo Completes Acquisition of Riverbed

Thoma Bravo, a leading private equity investment firm, and Teachers’ Private Capital, the private investor department of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, completed their previously announced acquisition of Riverbed Technology. The acquisition is valued at approximately $3.5 billion, with Riverbed stockholders receiving $21.00 per share in cash.

Freescale Intros White Box SDN with Advantech

Freescale Semiconductor introduced its new SDN switching platform powered by its QorIQ multicore processors and designed to bring intelligence, agility and security to the network’s edge for the secure Internet of Tomorrow.

The white box solution, which was developed in conjunction with Advantech, leverages Freescale’s 24-core, server-class QorIQ T4240 processor and VortiQa Open Network software. The platform couples the QorIQ processors with standard switch ASIC devices. The platform utilizes standards-based protocols such as OpenFlow, and supports manageability through open technologies such as OpenStack and OpenDaylight. It includes VNF support, commercial grade VortiQa SDN software supporting OpenFlow version 1.3 with extensions for Layer 4 and above protocols, and Layer 2/3 forwarding.

Freescale said its new platform enables exceptional network security for virtualized environments by supporting the integration of high performance packet processing functions such as firewalling, intrusion detection and IPSEC over VxLAN.

Apigee Completes IPO - NASDAQ: APIC

On Friday, Apigee, a start-up based in San Jose, California, completed its initial public offering (IPO) of 5,115,000 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $17.00 per share. Apigee is now traded on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol "APIC."

The company's Apigee Edge API platform helps enterprises to build mobile and digital initiatives using APIs, apps and data. Apigee Insights delivers big data predictive analytics. Apigee says that when used together, its APIs and predictive analytics can create an adaptive cycle of continuous improvement – and the faster an enterprise goes through this cycle, the faster it can innovate, adapt and accelerate its digital business.

ZTE Reports Rise in Q1 Profits

ZTE reported first-quarter 2015 net profit RMB 883 million (US$142 million), up 41.9% year over year. Basic earnings per share climbed to RMB 0.24, while revenue rose 10.2% to RMB 21 billion.

Operating revenue from telecommunications software systems, services and other products increased by 23.4% in the first quarter, as ZTE recorded strong growth from video and network terminal products, in addition to services.

Revenue from Carriers’ Networks increased by 8.9%, as compared to the same period last year, driven by growth in sales of products such as wireless communication systems, wireline switch and access systems, routers and router switches. Operating revenue from handset terminals increased by 7%, as compared to the same period last year, reflecting mainly higher sales of 4G

ZTE said its strategy is capture the growth in demand for solutions in cloud computing, big Data, Smart City and high-performance routers.

Looking ahead, ZTE will continue to focus on its three main operations of Carrier Networks, Enterprise Business and Mobile Devices. In Carriers’ Networks, ZTE will be committed to developing solutions for smarter networks to support carriers in their transformation into information-based operations. Windstream Completes Spinout of Network Assets Division into REIT

Windstream completed its previously-announced, tax-free spinoff of select telecommunications network assets into a new company, Communications Sales and Leasing (Nasdaq:CSAL), an independent publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT).

In addition, Windstream also announced the near completion of a one-for-six reverse stock split of Windstream's shares.

"Today's successful spinoff will significantly advance our commitment to deliver value for shareholders," said Tony Thomas, president and chief executive officer of Windstream. "This innovative transaction has made Windstream a stronger company with less debt and increased capacity to invest in our network to provide advanced communication
services to customers. I'm also excited about the growth prospects of CS&L."

In connection with the spinoff, Windstream repaid debt in an aggregate amount equal to $2.4 billion under its outstanding credit agreement. Windstream also received cash proceeds of $1.035 billion, which is anticipated to be used to retire additional debt over the next 30 days.

In July 2014, Windstream announced a bold plans to spin off its fiber and copper network, along with certain other assets, into an independent, publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT).  The network operations business would then lease back the physical assets to Windstream through a long-term triple-net exclusive lease with an initial estimated rent payment of $650 million per year.

The company said the separation of its physical network from its services business will enable it to become a more nimble competitor, while accelerating network investments, and maximizing shareholder value. The new REIT would be open to diversify its assets through acquisitions.

"This transaction will make Windstream a more nimble competitor in today’s increasingly dynamic communications marketplace and accelerate our deployment of advanced communications services," said Jeff Gardner, president and CEO of Windstream. "Additionally, the REIT will have geographically diverse, high-quality assets and sustainable cash flows with the ability to grow and diversify over time."

Marvell Trims Guidance

Marvell Technology announced preliminary financial results for the first quarter of its fiscal 2016, saying it now expects revenue to be below the company's previous outlook. Marvell now expects first quarter of fiscal 2016 revenue to be in the range of $710 million to $740 million, compared to the previous expectation of $810 million to $830 million.

The cited weaker than previously expected PC and storage markets and lower than expected emerging market demand.

Pica8 Enables Label BGP on White Box Switches

Pica8 announced support for Labeled BGP on bare-metal, white box switches -- a new network overlay solution with applications for service providers and cloud data center operators.

Pica8 said the approach will appeal to many large enterprises who are pursuing a VXLAN / VMware model for multi-tenant services, workload mobility and overlay networking within their data centers.

The new capability, which is part of Pica8’s latest SDN release (PicOS 2.6), is similar to MPLS in that it uses labels to establish service tunnels across the network. Label BGP adds the
dynamic programmability of SDN. BGP is a signaling mechanism carriers can use to create MPLS paths; but today this function is only available in expensive edge routers from the likes of Cisco and Juniper. This capability in Pica8’s OS, coupled with white box economics, gives carriers a far more cost-effective alternative to deploying this technology.

Google Project Fi Aims for Seamless Connections Between Networks

Google announced Project Fi -- its effort to define "the future of communications" by building a virtual mobile network service leveraging Wi-Fi the cellular infrastructure of carrier partners. For its U.S. launch, Google has confirmed T-Mobile and Sprint as partners.

Equinix Commits to 100% Clean and Renewal Data Center Energy

Equinix committed to a long-term goal to use 100% clean and renewable energy to power its global platform, which now includes data centers in over 33 markets on five continents. Equinix aims to deliver carbon-neutral data center and interconnection services.

In 2014, Equinix consumed over 2,200 gigawatt hours of energy across its global data center platform.

Procera to be Acquired by Private Equity Firm for $240 Million

Procera Networks has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by private funds managed by Francisco Partners Management, a technology-focused private equity firm, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $240 million. Under the deal, Francisco Partners will acquire all outstanding shares of Procera’s common stock for $11.50 per share in cash, representing a premium of approximately 21% over the closing price of Procera’s common stock on April 21, 2015, and a premium of approximately 32% over the unaffected closing price on January 22, 2015, the last day prior to an article reporting the potential sale of the company.

“As part of Francisco Partners’ portfolio of companies, Procera will have the resources and financial expertise needed to attain the next level of growth and to strengthen our competitive market position,” said James Brear, President and CEO of Procera. “I believe this transaction delivers compelling value to our stockholders, and we remain firmly committed to establishing Procera as the leader in improving the customer broadband experience for carriers and operators.”

Procera also announced preliminary results for Q1 2015, saying revenue is expected to be in the range of $19.5 million to $20.5 million. The ratio of bookings to revenue for the first quarter was below one. The company expects the gross margin percentage to be approximately 60% and to incur a net operating loss on a GAAP and non-GAAP basis for the first quarter of 2015. The company is not revising its previously announced guidance for the full year.

F5 Names Manny Rivelo as New CEO

F5 Networks appointed Manny Rivelo as its new President and Chief Executive Officer and a member of F5’s Board of Directors effective July 1, 2015. He succeeds longtime CEO, John McAdam, who will become Chairman of the Board of Directors upon his retirement on July 1st. Al Higginson, who has been on the F5 Board of Directors since 1996, and has served as Board Chairman since 2004, will remain on F5’s Board as Lead Independent Director.

Previously, Rivelo served as F5’s Executive Vice President of Strategic Solutions. Before joining F5 in October 2011, Rivelo was Senior Vice President of Engineering Systems and Operations for Cisco Systems.  He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology.


Separately, F5 Networks announced revenue of $472.1 million, up 2 percent from $462.8 million in the prior quarter and 12 percent from $420.0 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2014. GAAP net income was $85.7 million ($1.18 per diluted share), compared to $89.1 million ($1.21 per diluted share) in the prior quarter and $69.6 million ($0.91 per diluted share) in the second quarter a year ago.

 “Revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2015 reflected solid sequential and year-over-year growth in sales to U.S. service providers and enterprise customers,” said John McAdam, F5 President and Chief Executive Officer. “The region’s strong performance was underpinned by a rebound in both the number and total dollar amount of deals greater than $1 million. In contrast, sales growth in EMEA and APAC came in below our expectations. Our solid earnings results reflect continued strength in our operating margins and were also supported by a lower than anticipated effective tax rate for the quarter. ARRIS to Acquire Pace for $2.1 Billion

ARRIS Group agree to acquire Pace plc., a supplier of networking equipment for cable operators, for US$2.1 billion (£1.4 billion) is stock and cash.

Under the agreed upon terms, Pace shareholders will receive £1.325 of cash and a fixed exchange ratio of 0.1455 New ARRIS shares for each Pace share, reflecting aggregate consideration as of April 21, 2015 of £4.265 per share, representing a 28% premium to the Pace closing share price as of April 21, 2015.

The transaction will result in the formation of New ARRIS, which will be incorporated in the U.K., and its operational and worldwide headquarters will be in Suwanee, GA USA. New ARRIS is expected to be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker ARRS. In connection with the formation of New ARRIS each current share of ARRIS will be exchanged for one share in New ARRIS.

IBM SoftLayer has opened a second cloud data center in the Netherlands, located in Almere, just outside of Amsterdam. The new data center is securely connected by private network to all SoftLayer data centers around the world.

Ixia Demos Native 100GbE Interface Security Test

Ixia demonstrated its "PerfectStorm" 100GbE - an application and security testing platform that supports 100GbE native interfaces.

A demo at this week's 2015 RSA Conference uses the new hardware for Juniper Networks' SRX5800 Services Gateway to demonstrate carrier-grade, next-generation firewall technology scaling to Two Terabits per second (2 Tbps) of workloads.
