Orange and Nokia will introduce an integrated Ovi service across the UK and France to make it easier for customers to access content and the best apps. Specifically, Orange is working with Nokia to create a single sign-on for customers on a range of new handsets that simplifies the registration and purchasing process. Customers that purchase a Nokia device in the Orange Signature range will enjoy a wider range of local content and apps, sourced through the Orange developer community, and accessible through the Ovi Store with Orange. Nokia's Ovi Store with Orange will be accessible by Orange customers in the UK and France in 2011.

Dell'Oro: Strong Growth for Wireless Packet Core Market in Q2

the Wireless Packet Core market grew 19 percent sequentially during the second quarter of 2010, in large part due to sustained growth in data and signaling traffic from mobile broadband services and smartphones, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. On a year-over-year basis, the market was substantially lower due to exceptional 3G network-related investments in China that peaked in the second quarter of 2009.


According to the report, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens both gained market share in the second quarter of the year, while Huawei's share declined despite higher revenues than the first quarter this year.


"As network operators begin to transition to LTE, the rapidly growing wireless packet core equipment market is becoming more competitive and market share shifts are looming," said Greg Collins, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "Not only are there new entrants like Juniper and Tellabs, but operators have begun to opt for different vendors for their evolved packet core. For example, Cisco supplies Verizon Wireless' current wireless packet core equipment, but, as Verizon Wireless has begun to deploy LTE, it has awarded the evolved packet core to both Cisco and Alcatel-Lucent. MetroPCS, a long-time Alcatel-Lucent customer, has awarded its LTE network, both radio and evolved packet core, to Ericsson," Collins added.

Joyent Secures $15 Million for Platform-as-a-Service Technology

Joyent, a start-up based in San Francisco, secured $15 million in Series C funding to expand international operations and build momentum in the marketplace for the company's core platform-as-a-service cloud computing technologies. Joyent's focus is to offer a "complete technology stack that delivers true cloud computing for public, private, and hybrid clouds." The company says its smart technology is able to tap into underutilized resources (RAM, CPU, Network) to provide best-in-class application performance.


The round was led by Series B investor Intel Capital, with additional support from existing investor Greycroft Partners and new investor Liberty Global.

Verizon Introduces Pay-As-You-Go Cloud Computing for SMBs

Verizon introduced a Computing as a Service (CaaS) offering for small and medium-sized businesses. The cloud-based computing service lets customize the server, storage and network resources required to manage a Web presence or enable company applications.


Verizon's CaaS for SMBs offers built-in VPN security and a web-based console. Enterprise-class integrated service load balancing is available in the cloud, allowing capacity to be share among a company's virtual server farm.

XO Expands Ethernet-over-Copper Network

XO Communications has expanded its Ethernet over Copper (EoC) network by more than 30 percent, increasing the company's coverage in 39 existing markets and launching availability in Charlotte, N.C., Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y. The expanded footprint is due to newly activated EoC-enabled local service offices (LSOs), bringing XO's count to more than 400 LSOs across the U.S. By bonding copper pairs, XO Communications enables its customers to scale their delivered bandwidth from 3 Mbps up to 20 Mbps.


XO said Ethernet over Copper footprint provides a high-bandwidth connectivity solution that circumvents the cost and availability challenges of fiber. While fewer than 5 percent of all businesses in the U.S. are connected via fiber (New Paradigm Resources Group, 2010), the XO EoC network alone reaches more than 1 million businesses.

SandForce Raises $25 Million for SSD Processors

SandForce, a start-up based in Saratoga, California, raised $25 million in Series D funding for its SSD (Solid State Drive) processors. SandForce's chips are designed to overcome data retention issues associated with NAND flash memory, making it possible to build SSDs that deliver unprecedented performance over the life of the drive with orders-of-magnitude higher reliability than enterprise-class HDDs (Hard Disk Drives).

Telenor has implemented a new IMS based Multimedia Telephony (MMTel) solution from Ericsson that will gradually support all of its telephony services, including future 4G voice.


Under the agreement, Ericsson is the sole supplier of the new MultiMedia Telephony (MMTel) solution in Telenor's fixed network and the prime integrator of the project. The solution includes an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Core network, Ericsson's own MMTel Application Server (MTAS) and an Ericsson Data Layered Architecture solution. This will consolidate all of Telenor's mobile and fixed subscriber data into a centralized user database based on a Data Layered Architecture (DLA). Ericsson Unveils 21Mbps Embedded HSPA module

Ericsson introduced its most advanced HSPA mobile broadband module for notebooks, netbooks and tablets. The F5521gw module is capable of download speeds of up to 2 1Mbps with upload speeds reaching 5.76 Mbps.


It is based on ST-Ericsson's silicon and features embedded GPS functionality and Ericsson's unique Wake-on Wireless capability. This provides the ability to remotely "wake" the device, subscribe to content push services and receive updates at any time. When combined with GPS, enterprise features such as remote manageability, asset protection and tracking, geofencing and security updates are also possible.


The module is also interoperable with the latest generation of Intel Anti-Theft Technology (version 3.0), which offers a proactive security capability by remotely disabling a computer using encrypted text messages even when the operating system is not running (out-of-band). Ciena Wins Pan-European Services Deal with Interoute

Interoute, owner operator of a pan-European fiber network, has selected Ciena Specialist Services for end-to-end managed field services support across its pan-European network operations. The five year contract marks a high-note entry for Ciena into the multivendor managed field services area. Financial terms were not disclosed.


As part of the deal, in addition to the spares management and maintenance services (for Ciena-manufactured products) already in place, Ciena will provide the operator with multivendor first line maintenance (FLM), effectively becoming its field service partner of choice in the selected countries. The European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC) has conducted a public test of the Cisco mobile Internet solution using Spirent test solutions to validate critical attributes across all aspects of the mobile network.


The tests included validating the mobile back haul's ability to handle edge connections of E1 traffic being aggregated through the 100 Gbps backbone links and the network core's ability to scale to support the increases in users and data requirements.


The test bed included the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System, Cisco ASR 5000 Aggregation Services Routers mobile multimedia core, Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers, Cisco MWR 2941-DC Mobile Wireless Router, Cisco 7609 Router and other key network components.
