Aware Announces Adoption of its StratiPHY-Bonded ADSL2+ Technology

Aware announced that both Comtrend and Netopia have selected Analog Devices' "Fusiv" network processor and new ADSL2+ bonding reference platform, which are based upon Aware's intellectual property, for their next-generation residential gateways.

Loop bonding technology provides the means for combining multiple ADSL2+ connections together into a single, aggregated connection, even if they have different capacities. StratiPHY- Bonded is a complete instantiation of the ITU-T G.998.1 (G.bond-ATM) bonding standard which consists of bonding logic and management software to support two-pair bonding of ADSL2+ lines for data rates up to 48 Mbps downstream.

Analog Devices' standard-compliant bonded platform was developed in tandem with Aware and combines ADI's Fusiv network processors and two field- proven EaglePlus ADSL2+ PHY devices, which are based on Aware's StratiPHY2+ and StratiPHY-Bonded intellectual property, to achieve bonded link rates of up to 48Mbps.

AT&T Reports Q2 Revenue of $6.8 billion, Continued Pricing Pressures

AT&T reported net income of $307 million, or earnings per diluted share of $0.38. Revenue was $6.8 billion, which included $5.2 billion from AT&T Business and $1.6 billion from AT&T Consumer. Consolidated revenue declined 11.5 percent versus the second quarter of 2004, primarily due to continued declines in long distance (LD) voice and data revenue.

Some highlights for AT&T Business:

  • Revenue was $5.2 billion, a decline of 8.1 percent from the prior-year second quarter, primarily driven by ongoing pricing pressure in traditional voice and data services. Revenue was positively impacted by strong year-over-year growth in IP&E services.

  • Long distance voice revenue decreased 12.8 percent from the prior-year second quarter. Growth rates were negatively affected by continued pricing pressure, partially offset by a slight increase in overall volumes, as growth in wholesale volumes more than offset the decline in retail volumes.

  • Local voice revenue declined 9.9 percent from the prior-year second quarter, reflecting declines in reciprocal compensation revenue, as well as lower payphone-related revenue as a result of the sale of the company's National Public Markets business. AT&T said the decline also reflects its "ongoing strategy of selectively approaching the small business market, placing a greater focus on profitability than overall market share." AT&T continued to see the impact of this strategic change as the number of local access lines declined.

  • Data revenue declined 10.2 percent from the prior-year second quarter as a result of pricing pressure and technology migration.
    # IP&E-services revenue grew 9.5 percent over the prior-year second quarter, reflecting AT&T's ongoing transformation to next-generation networking services such as Enhanced Virtual Private Network (E-VPN) and IP-enabled frame relay services, partially offset by declines in Managed Internet Access.

Some highlights for AT&T Consumer:

  • Revenue was $1.6 billion, a decline of 20.8 percent versus the prior-year second quarter, largely driven by a decline in standalone long distance revenue due to volume declines associated with competitive customer losses and the continued impact of wireless and Internet substitution, partially offset by targeted price increases. Decreased bundled revenue also contributed to the revenue decline.

  • Operating income totaled $489 million, yielding an operating margin of 30.7 percent, compared with operating income of $240 million and an operating margin of 11.9 percent in the prior-year second quarter. Current-quarter operating income was negatively impacted by net restructuring and other charges of $10 million and was positively impacted by a $35 million net benefit from lower depreciation as a result of asset-impairment charges taken during the third quarter of 2004.

  • The year-over-year increase in operating income and margin reflects a significant reduction in selling, general and administrative expenses, primarily attributable to the strategic decision to discontinue marketing for residential local and standalone long distance (LD) customers.

"AT&T's second quarter results demonstrate our continued focus on executing in the marketplace, managing costs, and strengthening our competitive position with enterprise customers," said AT&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David W. Dorman. "Given the overwhelming shareholder support we received for our merger with SBC, we look forward to securing all appropriate regulatory approvals and completing this transaction in a timely manner."http://www.att.com

Internet2 Selects Glimmerglass Intelligent Optical Switches

Internet2 has selected Glimmerglass' Intelligent Optical Switches for deployment in five national network nodes located in Seattle, Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as part of the Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) project.

The Glimmerglass switches will be used in this national-scale testbed to dynamically provision high-bandwidth optical data circuits between network interfaces. The HOPI project is developing and testing a network that will perform this process on demand as opposed to traditional provisioning intervals that can take weeks or months.

The Glimmerglass switches can essentially re-cable all of the physical fiber connections between network interfaces, optical devices and equipment on the fly in milliseconds.

http://www.glimmerglass.com
http://www.internet2.edu/
  • The Internet2 Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) will serve as a national network testbed infrastructure that allows researchers to experiment with new optical technologies, including dynamically provisioned wavelengths, circuit switched environments, and new transport protocols. The HOPI testbed will utilize facilities from Internet2's Abilene Network, the National Lambda Rail (NLR) network, the MANLAN exchange point, and regional optical networks. Each HOPI node will consist of an Ethernet switch with 10GigE capabilities, a fiber cross connect switch, and servers to control HOPI's network infrastructure and measure network performance, all designed to model future optical infrastructures.

  • The HOPI testbed is using HP's ProLiant DL360 G4 servers to provide monitoring and control plane capabilities. Over the next six months, the HP servers will be deployed into the HOPI nodes located in Seattle, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and in Washington D.C. Once deployed, the HP servers will be used to monitor and measure the performance of the HOPI circuits by collecting error reporting data as well as network performance measurement data allowing for event correlation and performance results of varying network experiments. In addition, the servers will create a platform for control plane activities which enable engineers to experiment with dynamic provisioning capabilities, a key component of the HOPI testbed. By controlling the topology of the network, the servers will work to instruct the various pieces of equipment in the network on which connections to build, when, and for how long. The control plane servers will take the user entered request for greater network capacity, confirm the availability of those resources, communicate the instructions necessary for configuring the network to the various network devices and then remove that configuration after the usage is complete. In the future, as bandwidth-intensive applications become more prevalent, this type of on-demand provisioning will enable users to quickly bring up a dedicated optical circuit to send large data transfers without disrupting traffic on the backbone network.

  • Force10 Networks is supplying its Force10 E-Series family of switch/routers for Internet2's Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) project.

  • In May 2005, Glimmerglass named Robert Lundy as its new president and CEO. Previously, Lundy successfully built Wavtrace, a broadband wireless access company which was later acquired by Harris Corporation. He was the CEO of Opthos, an all-optical metro-network switching systems provider. Earlier, he led Xtera, an optical transmission company, as president and CEO.

Marvell Introduces 90 nm WLAN Single Chip Solution

Marvell introduced an ultra-low-power 90 nm Wireless LAN single chip solution. Targeted at a wide variety of consumer devices, including 3G+ and broadband handsets, it integrates an ARM compliant CPU, high speed serial host interfaces including SDIO and SPI to ensure interoperability with a variety of host systems, and advanced 802.11 a/b/g RF transceiver with full cellular coexistence.

Marvell said its new 88W8686 device, which represents its third generation technology, raises the bar on WLAN performance by drawing less than 400 Mw on a total system footprint of less than 50 mm2. The company claims its solution in a dual mode handset would result in connected standby times in excess of 250 hours and talk time in excess of 10 hours, versus current solutions which offer on average 70 and 4 hours respectively. Additionally, the device supports advanced layer 3/4 packet processing (TCP/IP) along with enhancements for UMA and IMS 3G services.

"Our vision of the smallest and lowest-power silicon solution drove our 90 nm process development. The Marvell 88W8686 gives our customers the ability to enhance battery life by at least 100%," said Dr. Paramesh Gopi, General Manager of the Embedded and Emerging Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell.
