Telefónica Deploys 2.6 GHz LTE at MWC with ALU's LightRadio

On the eve of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Telefónica activated an LTE network using the 2.6Ghz frequency band and small cell architecture. Download performance is rated at 100 Mbps with uploads ranging between 40-60Mbps. Telefónica said each cell in its LTE network can comfortably support 30 people browsing simultaneously with average speed of 30Mbps. Telefónica also expects to see vastly improved indoor coverage and can increase capacity by up to 400 per cent in high density data-traffic areas.

In a press conference with partners Alcatel-Lucent and Samsung, Enrique Blanco, Telefónica's Chief Technology Officer stated 'Today the future of mobile networks begins. The deployment of LTE that Telefónica has brought to the MWC, together with Alcatel -Lucent, gives us a glimpse of a tomorrow where everyone and everything is seamlessly connected, and in superfast time. But the challenge ahead is to ensure that all the technologies currently being deployed – 2G, 3G, LTE, Wi-Fi and Fiber – can co-exist to deliver next generation communications. Telefónica's strategy is to develop intelligent networks that allow these different technologies to co-exist efficiently and cover customers' growing connectivity needs in markets that are at different stages of development."

Telefónica's network is using Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio technology, allowing conventional radio base stations co-exist with 4G metro cells (small base stations incorporating antennas and radio) working on the same frequency and with no interference. As a strong supporter for Telefonica's LTE service initiative, Samsung is also presenting the first LTE smart mobile devices for band 7 (2.6Ghz), GALAXY S II LTE smartphone and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE tablet, which can be used on this new high-capacity network.

Wim Sweldens, President of Alcatel-Lucent's Wireless Division said: 'This close collaboration with Telefónica through our co-creation programme is a clear articulation of the future of mobile broadband – rather than merely evolving their current architecture, which was designed for voice and messaging, Telefónica is making fast progress toward building a mobile broadband network designed with the future in mind. The wireless network of the future needs to be lighter, greener and closer to customers and deliver much higher capacity - that is what lightRadio is all about'.

Nokia Siemens Networks Sees Big 2G/3G/4G Gains

Nokia Siemens Networks announced that the latest release of its Liquid Radio GSM software suite can significantly increase 2G efficiency, and can double 3G and 4G data rates. The company says operators re-farming GSM frequency to support 3G and 4G rollouts can free up to 30% of their spectrum, reduce total cost of ownership by 20% and potentially double their average 3G and 4G data speeds. GSM only network operators can potentially quadruple their capacity while lowering energy costs by 14%.

NSN's Liquid Radio GSM software suite comprises five features that compress the GSM traffic and reduce the number of traffic channels to transmit the same amount of voice and data: Orthogonal Sub Channel (OSC), Smart Resource Adaptation (SRA), Precise Paging (PP), Dynamic Frequency and Channel Allocation (DFCA).

In addition, the company is introducing a Flexible MCPA (Multi Carrier Power Amplifier) Tx power pooling feature that effectively enables dynamic, rather than static sharing of radio resources of GSM carriers, allocating the resources precisely and exactly where the usage is. This reduces the output power needed for GSM, and the company calculates that in case of refarming, this frees more capacity for 3G or 4G, enabling up to double the average 3G or 4G throughput.

Nokia Siemens Networks notes that it currently has 23 references for its professional re-farming services.

“Our multiradio equipment helps operators manage the unpredictable fluctuations in network coverage and capacity demands as mobile broadband users switch across applications and devices on-the-move,? said Thorsten Robrecht, head of Network Systems product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “With the new software suite, operators can make their network fluid, further optimize their Flexi Multiradio Base Station radio equipment, improve network efficiency and get more out of their spectrum. Moreover, with re-farming, rollout of mobile broadband services is easier, more cost efficient, and this can potentially help increase revenues.?http://www.nokiasiemensnetworks.com

Ericsson Links LTE main and Remote Radio Units by Microwave

Ericsson has demonstrated the ability to link LTE main and remote radio units using microwave connections with 2.5 Gbps of capacity. Typically, fiber is used to connect main and remote radio units (RRUs), however Ericsson believes microwave radios may be more practical in some circumstances, including small cells and heterogeneous networks (hetnet).

In the tests, conducted at the Ericsson premises in China, the microwave connection between the main unit and the remote unit was provided by a MINI-LINK PT, working in the E-band (70-80GHz). The microwave link provided capacity of 2.5Gbps, which is sufficient for a wireless main-remote system in compliance with Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) standards. This is one example of new applications with high-capacity packet microwave products.

Ericsson Boosts HSPA Uplink Capacity by 3X

Ericsson has demonstrated a technique to boost HSPA over-the-air uplink throughput for simultaneously active devices in a cell from around 4Mbps to more than 12Mbps. The demonstrated capacity used a 5 MHz WCDMA carrier and did not require upgrades to the HSPA client devices.

Ericsson said the gains are made possible by its commercially available receiver technology, Ericsson Interference Suppression, with 4-antenna radio base stations. The Interference Suppression base station receiver technology for WCDMA/HSPA leverages advanced software algorithms in the base station that greatly reduce the negative effects of uplink interference in the network. The gains were further enhanced by the use of base stations configured with four antennas per cell. This combination delivers a leap in end user experience and uplink capacity.

"We have proven that Ericsson's unique Interference Suppression is a giant leap forward and it will be the new reference for WCDMA uplink performance for years to come. This can even be further enhanced by combining it with multi-receive antenna technologies. Because these technologies work with existing devices, operators that implement them will instantly benefit from the attractive gain," stated Nils Viklund, Director WCDMA RAN at Ericsson.

Juniper Acquire Mykonos for Intrusion Deception System

Juniper Networks has acquired Mykonos Software, which supplies an Intrusion Deception System for protecting websites and web applications, for approximately $80 million in cash.

The Mykonos intrusion deception system, which uses deceptive tar traps, is capable of detecting an attacker before an attack is in progress, catching an attack in progress, profiling the attack, learning the attacker's behavior, and then use that behavior to thwart future attacks. The company said that unlike current solutions such as web security appliances and Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), its system provides device level tracking beyond IP address tracking that allows for attackers to be uniquely identified, monitored and blocked.

Mykonos is based in San Francisco. The company was founded in 2009 by David Koretz.

Juniper said the acquisition extends its security footprint to bring next-generation, deception-based web application security to physical, virtual and cloud environments.
