DragonWave's AirPair Unite Converges Ethernet TDM

DragonWave introduced its AirPair Unite platform for converging Ethernet and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) traffic across a single wireless, IP stream.



AirPair Unite is a single indoor unit deployed at the network edge. It aggregates low-order interfaces such as T1 to higher rates such as DS3 and OC3 in the core.



DragonWave's AirPair Unite operates within both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies in the 11-to-38-GHz range, ensuring interference-free performance for customers' traffic. The DragonWave solution provides scalable, ultra-low-latency, wire-speed native Ethernet connectivity up to 800 Mbps full duplex and is a highly reliable platform enabling 99.999% service availability.



DragonWave said a wireless service provider or an enterprise could deploy the AirPair Unite pseudowire solution as a converged wireless backhaul solution. The solution could also be used in the backhaul of 3G and WiMAX network deployments.

Juniper Enhances Carrier Ethernet Portfolio

Juniper Networks has expanded its Carrier Ethernet portfolio with two Ethernet Services Routers and various software enhancements.



The new MX240 and MX480 leverage the JUNOS software as its operating system, enabling scalable Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) and new Layer 2 operations, administration and management (OAM) capabilities and features, in addition to full Layer 2 switching. With the latest update, JUNOS software now includes standards-based features such as IEEE 802.1ag to simplify fault management, as well as VPLS features, including support for both BGP- and LDP-based VPLS; egress multicasting capabilities for maximum bandwidth efficiency; and advanced multi-homing for high reliability and resiliency all the way to the Ethernet edge.




The new MX240 delivers 240 Gbps of switching or routing capacity in a compact 5 rack unit (RU) form factor; the MX480 features 480 Gbps of capacity in an 8 RU size. The platforms can simultaneously support up to 120 and 240 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, respectively, which is more than twice the capacity of similarly-sized Carrier Ethernet platforms. Both platforms scale to support over 1 million MAC addresses --- 15 times more than the closest currently available competitive offering, according to the company.



Juniper noted that because the MX-series can support more than twice as many interfaces per chassis, customers can increase the energy efficiency of their networks, reducing power, space and cooling costs by as much as 60 percent.



Juniper also announced a suite of new Dense Port Concentrator (DPC) cards to maximize MX-series system flexibility, enabling providers to drive new sources of revenue while reducing cost and complexity.
The new and enhanced DPC Cards include:

• Switching and Routing (DPCE-R): Mid-range solution that can operate as either a complete Layer 3 router or purely Layer 2 switch. Provides maximum flexibility and reduces sparing costs.



• Layer 2 Switching: (DPCE-X): Cost-optimized solution designed for metro Ethernet Transport; operates at Layer 2 or 2.5.



• Enhanced Queuing (DPCE-Q): Premium card that supports per-VLAN queuing (up to 64,000 queues per card), enabling providers to deploy business Ethernet services with committed bandwidths and QoS characteristics. Increases service revenue opportunities; ideal for migrating Frame Relay and ATM VPNs.

All of the above DPCs are available with 4x10 Gigabit Ethernet and 40x Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and are interchangeable across the MX-series line.



In addition the suite of MX-series chassis, line cards and JUNOS Carrier Ethernet features, Juniper is also delivering three new processor cards for its flagship M-series chassis, the M320. These new FPC-E3s take advantage of Juniper's new I-chip ASIC development that increases system performance, scalability and provides additional QoS capabilities.

Established in 2004, Sling Media is known for its place-shifting Slingbox and SlingPlayer software. Sling Media's product line is distributed in over 5,000 retail stores in 11 countries.

EchoStar Considering Spin-off of Technology and Infrastructure Assets

EchoStar Communications is considering a possible separation of its
businesses into two distinct publicly traded companies -- one focused on
the U.S. consumer pay-TV business and the other on satellite network
operations.



The first business would consist of the DISH Network and its over 13.585
million U.S. DBS customers. Installation, customer service, billing and
other consumer services would continue to be operated by DISH Network,
together with most satellites and spectrum used to support that
subscriber base. Mr. Ergen would continue to serve as Chairman and CEO
of DISH Network, and would fill the same roles with the spun-off company.



The spin-off assets would include, among other things, EchoStar's set
top box design and manufacturing business, its international operations,
and assets used to provide fixed satellite services to third parties,
together with satellites, uplink centers and spectrum licenses not
considered core to DISH Network's subscriber business. the set-top box
business shipped over nine million units in 2006 to DISH Network and
international customers. The recently announced acquisition of Sling
Media adds to this.



EchoStar recently submitted a request to the Internal Revenue Service
for a ruling as to the tax-free nature of the transaction.

Woven Systems, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, raised $20 million in venture funding for its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GE) fabric solutions.



Woven's EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch recently completed customer trials and is now in production. The 10 GE switch supports 144 non-blocking ports in an efficient 10 rack unit chassis. The company said its design delivers resilient, multi-path fabrics scaling to over 4000 10 GE edge ports.



The funding was led by MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures and included existing investors, Goldman Sachs and Palomar Ventures. The latest round of funding raises the total investment in the company to $35 million.

Sipera Enhances VoIP Security for Cisco Unified Communications

Sipera Systems released a software upgrade for its line of Sipera IPCS VoIP/UC security appliances that enables enterprises to better protect VoIP networks and remote users when deploying Cisco-based unified communications. Among other new IPCS features, Sipera added further protection capabilities for the Cisco Skinny Call Control Protocol (SCCP) along with encryption (TLS and SRTP) and 2-factor authentication (RSA SecurID) support for Cisco 7941 and 7961 phones.



Key features of the Sipera IPCS upgrade include:

Alcatel-Lucent and Kyocera Enter Mobile WiMAX Pact

Alcatel-Lucent and Kyocera Wireless announced a joint development agreement under which they will collaborate on the development of end-to-end wireless broadband solutions based on Universal WiMAX technology.



The partnership combines Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX network infrastructure -- based on the latest IEEE 802.16e-2005 standards (also called Rev-e) -- and a variety of wireless end-user devices from Kyocera, including multimode mobile phones, non-traditional wireless devices, wireless PC cards and USB devices for PCs.



Under the agreement, the two companies will cooperate to ensure the rapid development of WiMAX devices with enhanced mobility features, as well as multi-mode terminals that can enable seamless interoperability between WiMAX networks and cellular or Wi-Fi networks. The joint program will cover the establishment of specifications, the development and integration of WiMAX solutions, and the creation of an interoperability testing (IOT) program to ensure that the new Kyocera WiMAX devices can operate smoothly on Alcatel-Lucent's infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent and Kyocera anticipate the commercial availability of fully integrated solutions of WiMAX base stations and terminals from the two companies in the first half of 2008.

Vonage Loses Patent Suit to Sprint

A U.S. District Court jury ruled in favor of Sprint in a patent infringement lawsuit brought against Vonage. The jury awarded $69.5 million in damages to Sprint and five percent of on-going revenues while the infringed patents remain in effect.



Vonage said it plans to appeal the verdict and that it is developing technological workarounds to avoid use of the infringing patents.
