Cablevision Names Chief Engineer

Cablevision Systems announced the promotion of James A. Blackley to executive vice president of corporate engineering and technology. In this new position, Mr. Blackley will continue to serve as Cablevision's chief engineering executive with oversight of the company's engineering and technology, Enterprise IT and e-media departments. He continues to report to Cablevision's Chief Operating Officer Tom Rutledge.

China Telecom Upgrades CDMA Network with Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent announced a major contract with China Telecom to upgrade the service provider's CDMA network in 56 cities across nine provinces. The upgrade will be completed by the end of 2010. Financial terms were not disclosed.


Alcatel-Lucent will provide its converged radio access network (RAN) solution, including its newly-designed, ultra-compact, indoor 9916 Macro Base Station, which uses a new integrated radio and amplifier multi-sector transmit/receive unit (MS-TRU) to minimize power consumption. . Alcatel-Lucent will also provide an Ethernet backhaul capable RAN solution to cost-effectively meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demands of 3G mobile services delivery.

Chile's Entel Chooses Cisco, NetApp and VMware for Data Center

Chile's Entel has chosen Cisco, NetApp and VMware as technology suppliers of its data center in Ciudad de los Valles, the biggest and most modern data center for on-demand services in the country. Specifically, the new facility in Ciudad de los Valles features an Enhanced Security Multitenancy Design Architecture for a virtualized dynamic data center, including Cisco Nexus, Cisco Unified Computing System and Cisco MDStechnology solutions integrated with the FAS storage solutions of NetApp and the virtualization software of VMware.

Netflix Lands Major Content Streaming Deal with Studios

Netflix announced an Internet streaming content deal with EPIX, which is a joint venture between Viacom, its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) and Lionsgate. EPIX has subscription pay TV rights to new releases and movies from the libraries of its partners and will make these movies available to Netflix 90 days after their premium pay TV and subscription on demand debuts.

EchoStar Selects Widevine for Digital Rights Management

EchoStar has selected Widevine's DRM solution for the protection of content delivered by "SlingLoaded" consumer devices, giving added security when subscribers are watching or controlling their TV programming. Financial terms were not disclosed.


EchoStar's SlingLoaded set-top boxes provide an entertainment centerpiece combining cutting edge video and IP technologies, making it easy to watch and control home TV over the Internet from a desktop PC, Mac, laptop, or supported smartphones.



The Widevine platform is deployed by major Internet content services and large cable, satellite and telecommunication companies launching Internet-accessible pay TV services.

Lockheed Martin Shows MONAX Battlefield Broadband System

Lockheed Martin introduced its MONAX communications system for the battlefield. The MONAX communications system connects a commercial off-the-shelf smartphone to a ground or airborne 3G base station with a MONAX Lynx portable sleeve.


Lockheed Martin said its system is frequency flexible, connects hundreds of users to a single base station, and delivers superior range and link performance in voice, video and data transmission. The network uses a secure RF link, protected through exportable encryption for joint and coalition operations.

EXFO Boosts its Optical Spectrum Analyzer

EXFO announced a significant processing speed increase (10x to 20x) for its FTB-5240S Optical Spectrum Analyzer, which is designed for DWDM network commissioning and upgrades up to 40G. The processing speed increase significantly accelerates the FTB-5240S's applications. For instance, all acquisitions are now performed 10 times faster, re-analysis using different parameters is now 14 times faster, and trace loading is now 20 times faster.

Lockheed Martin Readies First Advanced Extremely High Frequency Satellite

Lockheed Martin Space Systems has encapsulated the first Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications satellite into the fairing in preparation for a mid-August liftoff aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

The AEHF will deliver survivable, protected, secure links to U.S. national leaders, air, land and sea forces, providing rapid, global coverage for the nation's strategic forces, the Air Force's space warning assets and operationally deployed military forces. The AEHF constellation will also serve international partners including Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Lockheed Martin said one AEHF satellite will provide greater total capacity than the entire Milstar constellation. Individual user data rates will be five times improved. The system is expected to include three geostationary satellites, along with spares.

The AEHF team is led by the U.S. Air Force Military Satellite Communications Systems Wing at the Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Sunnyvale, Calif., is the AEHF prime contractor and system manager, with Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Redondo Beach, Calif., as the payload provider.

Qualcomm Extends its Wireless Reach Initiative in Brazil

Qualcomm's Wireless Reach Initiative announced its participation in Brazil's "Fishing with 3G Nets" project, which will foster economic development and increase public safety by promoting digital and social inclusion for isolated fishermen and mariculture (oyster) cultivators. The project is also backed by Vivo, the largest mobile telecommunications company in Brazil with more than 56 million subscribers, Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentavel (IABS), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), ZTE Brazil, a provider of telecommunications equipment, and the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabralia.


The project has created a system that integrates mobile and web-based applications and handheld devices to support business operations and deliver real-time safety information to participating fishermen in Santa Cruz Cabralia.


As part of the project, participants have been given mobile devices with mobile credit to access to Vivo's 3G HSUPA wireless network, which enables participants to directly connect from offshore to land with consumers and business partners through both voice and data. Customized software applications were built to provide them with navigation, weather, marketing, direct sales, data collection and technical support; therefore fishermen have support for their activities with real-time analysis and relevant information.

LightSquared, which recently unveiled plans for a new LTE wholesale network across the U.S., has selected Siterra's web-based software to manage the deployment, installation, operation and maintenance of its forthcoming network. Siterra's capabilities include workflow-driven project management system that coordinates all site-related activities such as site selection, build-outs, and ongoing maintenance. It also enables users to track and maintain all assets associated with an operating site and integrate asset data with their enterprise financial and other operations support systems, along with other features.

Valero Selects Spacenet for Broadband Managed Services Nationwide

Spacenet announced a contract with Valero to serve as a provider for broadband network managed services and offer connectivity to its nationwide branded wholesale locations.


Valero, the largest independent refiner in North America, operates 5,800 retail and branded wholesale gas stations in the US and the Caribbean. Valero is leveraging Spacenet's satellite and DSL broadband managed services as well as its Prysm Pro network appliance to support its retail applications. These applications include Internet/intranet access, point-of-sale and credit/debit transactions, ATM transactions, Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG), WiFi, store loyalty programs and video security. The upgraded network combines Spacenet's SkyEdge VSAT satellite platform and DSL Managed Services into a centrally managed, integrated platform that supports full PCI compliance.

Russia's FORATEC Selects Ciena's CN 4200

FORATEC, a leading Russian telecommunication operator, has selected Ciena's CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform for an optical transport network build-out in the country's Urals region. The newly deployed network was implemented by Ciena in partnership with Jet Infosystems, one of the major systems integrators in Russia and the CIS region and recent member of Ciena's BizConnect global partner program. Financial terms were not disclosed.
