Cisco Confirms 6,500 Job Cuts, Additional Transfers

Cisco confirmed a workforce reduction of approximately 6,500 employees, including approximately 2,100 employees who elected to participate in a voluntary early retirement program. The cuts will occur across the global workforce across all functions.

Cisco said the job cuts include a reduction totaling approximately 15 percent of vice president level and above employees. This represents a reduction of approximately 9 percent of Cisco's regular full-time workforce.

Cisco plans to notify impacted employees in the United States, Canada and select countries during the first week of August. The remainder of the global workforce reductions are expected to occur at a later date in compliance with local laws and regulations.

Cisco said these cuts will result in pre-tax restructuring charges to its GAAP financial results of no more than $1.3 billion over several quarters, consisting of severance and other one-time termination benefits.

In addition, Cisco will sell its set-top box manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico, to Foxconn Technology Group. The approximately 5,000 people employed at the facility will become employees of Foxconn in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 and no job losses are expected as a result of the sale. This figure is in addition to the approximately 6,500 employees impacted by the reduction in workforce and the voluntary early retirement program.

Cisco Catalyst Pushes 60-watt Power over Ethernet

Cisco introduced the first 60-watt Power over Ethernet capability via a new module for the Catalyst 4500E Switch.

Cisco's new Universal Power Over Ethernet (UPOE) linecard and UPOE splitter enables any device requiring up to 60-watt power to be powered by Cisco's Catalyst 4500E Switches. This includes Cisco IP phones, personal telepresence systems, compact switches and wireless access points. Cisco said this is twice the power per port compared to competing products.

Up to 120 UPOE ports can be supported in a single Catalyst 4500E chassis. Cisco Universal Power Over Ethernet utilizes standard Cat 5e or higher cabling and RJ45 connectors to enable an easier deployment of this solution within existing infrastructures.

Additionally, Cisco announced that Samsung zero client desktop virtualization devices and BT IP turrets have integrated Cisco UPOE technology into their devices to allow customers the immediate advantage of using their existing Cisco network to power these solutions. http://www.cisco.com

  • Cisco has been a leader in delivering PoE since 2000 when it introduced 7-watt inline power over Ethernet for powering Cisco IP Phones.

NetLogic and EZchip Collaborate on Terabit-class Packet Processing

NetLogic Microsystems and EZchip Semiconductor are collaborating on high performance, merchant, packet-processing solutions for IPv6-ready Terabit class systems. The companies are optimizing and and implementing exclusive operational modes in both EZchip's NP-4 100Gbps network processor (NPU) and NetLogic Microsystems' NL11k knowledge-based processor.

In addition, the companies are collaborating to further enhance the performance optimizations and tight coupling between EZchip's next-generation NP-5 200Gbps NPU and NetLogic Microsystems' next-generation of knowledge-based processors at the 28 nm node.

"We are excited to expand upon our long-standing collaboration with EZchip on multiple generations of our respective best-in-class products," said Chris O'Reilly, vice president of marketing at NetLogic Microsystems. "With each successive generation, we have seen an increase in the content of EZchip's network processors as well as our knowledge-based processors per line card offering increasing levels of performance and functionality. This trend bodes well for both our companies as customers are expected to continue to demand higher performance, more intelligence and greater functionality."

"Our collaboration with NetLogic Microsystems brings together the best technologies to produce solutions that enable customers to meet the challenges of ever increasing performance requirements," said Amir Eyal, vice president of business development at EZchip. http://www.netlogicmicro.com http://www.ezchip.com

Vitesse Delivers 14 Gbps Adaptive Quad Channel Extender

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced a multi-protocol, adaptive quad channel extender for next-generation protocols such as 10G/40G/100G Ethernet, Infiniband FDR, and 16G Fibre Channel. The new VSC7224 delivers a data rate range from 155 Mbps to 14.1 Gbps and power consumption as low as 100mW per channel.

The device offers a comprehensive, low power signal integrity solution which can adaptively compensate for signal degradation in challenging network environments. It features Vitesse's proprietary adaptive FlexEQ technology.

Vitesse's VSC7224 delivers a hardware-based equalization suite, capable of equalizing multiple 14 Gbps signals over ranges greater than 65 inches of FR4 board trace or 20m of 24AWG twin-ax copper cable.

It uses four Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) taps to combat impairments in the signal from crosstalk and reflections, achieving an Isolation to Crosstalk Ratio (ICR) of better than 12dB.

Vitesse said the hardware-enabled adaptive receiver on the VSC7224 eliminates the arduous process of manually optimizing each individual lossy channel.

"The combination of autonomous adaptive equalization and a Clock & Data Recovery (CDR) unit that can be used at multiple speeds to effectively reset the jitter budget, makes this channel extender extremely useful for next-generation systems, especially to reduce system design time and improve yields," said Abhi Dugar, research manager, wired communications semiconductor research at IDC. "As networks move to mixes of Ethernet, Infiniband, and Fibre Channel, it becomes increasingly important to design for multiprotocol environments operating at a variety of rates."  http://www.vitesse.comwww.vitesse.com/products/product.php?number=VSC7224

Ciena Supplies Coherent 100 GigE for Romanian Educational Net

The Romanian Educational Network (RoEduNet) has deployed Ciena's coherent optical technology for the first live 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network in Eastern Europe. The next-generation infrastructure, deployed together with Ciena's BizConnect partner Felix Telecom, connects Bucharest, the capital of Romania, with Iaşi, the country's second largest city located more than 450 kilometers to the north. The deployment forms part of an expansion of RoEduNet's existing nationwide optical infrastructure, which is based on Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and Common Photonic Layer, by simply adding 100G wavelengths alongside 10G wavelengths. Felix Telecom is responsible for the design, installation, deployment and ongoing service for both RoEduNet's existing 10G network as well as the new 100G infrastructure.

RoEduNet, the Romanian National Research and Education Network (NREN), connects universities, schools, research centers and cultural institutions across the country. RoEduNet is part of GÉANT – the European education and research network linking academic and research institutions in more than 30 European countries. http://www.ciena.com
