PMC's DIGI-G4 Processor Scales OTN Line Card Capacity by 4X

PMC-Sierra has commenced sampling of its new DIGI-G4 chip -- the industry's highest density 4x100G OTN processor and featuring 50 percent less power per port than the previous generation.

The DIGI-G4 OTN processor, which builds on the success of PMC’s DIGI-120G, enabling the transition to 400G line cards in packet optical transport platforms (P-OTP), ROADM/WDM and optimized data center interconnect platforms for OTN switched metro networks. It increases 10G, 40G and 100G line card port density by 4X with flexible client mapping of Ethernet, storage, IP/MPLS and SONET/SDH, while reducing power by 50 percent per port. DIGI-G4 builds on the IP from DIGI-120G, enabling customers to maintain their rich feature set and software investment, which reduces time to market by up to six months and lowers development costs.

Significantly, DIGI-G4 delivers multi-rate, sub-180ns latency OTN encryption, allowing cloud and communications service providers to ensure security without compromising performance. DIGI-G4 supports sub-wavelength OTN encryption and is compatible with OTN switched networks. PMC said these these capabilities, combined with the densest 10G/40G/100G Ethernet ports, enables a new class of low-power, high-capacity transport platforms optimized specifically for the hyperscale data center WAN interconnect market (see whitepaper).

“Without DIGI-G4 the industry would be challenged to transition to 400G OTN switched metro networks,” said Babak Samimi, vice president of marketing and applications for PMC’s Communications Business Unit. “The world’s leading OEMs are designing around DIGI-G4 because our solution allows them to scale their product portfolios to the highest capacities at half the power per port, while leveraging their existing DIGI software investment. Coupled with new capabilities like OTN encryption, we’re solidifying PMC’s position as the industry leader in OTN processors.”

DIGI-G4 Highlights

  • Industry’s first single-chip 4x100G solution for OTN switched line cards
  • Integrated 100G Gearbox for direct connect to CFP2, CFP4 and QSFP28 transceivers
  • Industry’s highest density 10G, 40G and 100G multi-service support, including Ethernet, storage, IP/MPLS and SONET/SDH
  • Industry’s first sub-wavelength OTN encryption solution to secure the cloud
  • Industry’s first 25G granularity flexible framer to DSP interface providing scalable line-rates to match the programmable modulation capabilities found in next-generation Coherent DSPs
  • Multi-chip Interlaken interconnect solutions for scalable compact chassis data center interconnect applications
  • High performance OTN-SDK with adapter layer software accelerates customer time to market

F5 Delivers LineRate Point Virtual Load Balancer and Volume Licensing

F5 has released a virtual "LineRate Point" Load Balancer that delivers massive scalability and rapid deployment for cloud service providers and enterprise Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) environments.  The layer 7 load balancing solution is aimed at customers with large volumes of applications that require foundational load balancing and application proxy capabilities.

F5 said LineRate Point Load Balancer’s lightweight architecture reduces the impact on compute, memory, and storage resources in cloud, hybrid, and enterprise data center environments—making it an ideal solution when basic load balancing, application proxy, high availability, and SSL capabilities are needed.

In addition, F5 is now offering a Volume Licensing Subscription to customers that require large volumes of virtual application delivery solutions and services. BIG-IP virtual editions and LineRate Point Load Balancer can be deployed in private or public cloud environments under the new Volume Licensing Subscription.

“LineRate Point Load Balancer and Volume Licensing Subscription enable customers to scale virtualized application services at the correct scope and pace for their initiatives,” said Ryan Kearny, SVP of Product Development at F5. “F5’s streamlined Good, Better, Best purchasing model and cloud licensing options provide considerable savings compared to adding individual services a la carte. With F5’s software-based solutions, customers can efficiently build out their public/private cloud and data center environments with ultimate flexibility.”

Orange Business Launches SDN+NFV Pilot for SMBs

Beginning next month, Orange Business Services will be conducting a pilot deployment of virtualized network functions for small and medium enterprises (SMBs).

Orange Business Services confirmed that around ten SMBs (with up to ten sites) will test an SDN-enabled system that lets users manage their Intranet and Internet service in real-time. Users will be able to order and customize new virtualized application services of their choice: Internet content filtering, advanced security and antivirus. Orange has an SDN controller to managed the virtualized services.  Pilot companies will receive advanced support services from the project team. The trial is expected to last for a year.  Orange Business is aiming to launch a commercial service in 2016.

This pilot project is part of a larger program named "SDN for Business" dedicated to formalizing and implementing Orange Business Services' SDN strategy. SDN is among the top priorities of the Orange Group in defining its network evolution strategy.

Juniper and Mirantis Extend SDN Partnership

Juniper Networks and Mirantis announced an expanded engineering partnership to integrate the Mirantis OpenStack distribution with Juniper Contrail Networking, a standards based SDN solution for enterprise and service provider customers. Mirantis OpenStack also supports and interoperates with OpenContrail, an open source SDN solution. The companies have published a reference architecture for deploying and managing this joint solution.

The reference architecture is validated for Mirantis OpenStack 6.0 (based on OpenStack Juno), with Juniper Contrail Networking. Mirantis and Juniper plan to release a Fuel plugin in 2Q 2015 to further automate and simplify deploying and managing large-scale OpenStack clouds.

“Mirantis is the go-to vendor for building an OpenStack cloud. Integration of Mirantis OpenStack with Juniper Contrail Networking gives the enterprise-grade support that customers expect for large-scale open-source cloud deployments,” said Ankur Singla, corporate vice president and general manager, Cloud Software at Juniper Networks. “By providing developers, partners and customers a proven, open-source reference architecture, together Mirantis and Juniper will help accelerate adoption, foster new innovation and help customers realize the benefits of SDN more quickly.”

Northrop Grumman Selected to Protect DISA-Managed Networks

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) awarded a task order to Northrop Grumman to continue its lead role on the Acropolis and Sensor Operations program - a capability that protects DISA-managed networks from cyber-attack and provides global cyber situational awareness for these networks.

The award, which is worth up to $73.6 million over four years, covers operational services that support DISA's overarching Acropolis mission (formerly know as the Centaur program), which is to protect and defend the DOD Information Network. Northrop Grumman will continue providing secure, consolidated, and integrated defensive cyber operations and a global cyber situational awareness environment to network defense analysts so they can better protect and defend the DOD Joint Information Environment (JIE), DOD Enterprise Services, and the DOD Information Network (DODIN).

DT Launches DNS Service Resilient to DDoS

International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS), the international wholesale arm of Deutsche Telekom, is launching a new Domain Name System (DNS) service called ICSS Route that is to be resilient against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

ICSS Route is based on global DNS network and intelligent routing capabilities, which ensure fast response times, low latency and reliable access from anywhere in the world. It also incorporates monitoring of server performance, availability and traffic management. As ICSS Route is authoritative-only, it does not operate in the recursive mode and is therefore immune to cache poisoning attacks and other risks. The fully RFC compliant solution can be run as either a managed or secondary DNS service and is available via a set of public APIs or over the ICSS CDN Web portal.

Stephan Schröder, Vice President Internet & Content at ICSS said, “ICSS Route was built to cope with all the problems other systems can’t handle. It is a dedicated, enterprise-grade platform with extremely high performance, availability and security. Because it’s scalable and requires no up-front investment, it is also very cost-effective.”
