JDSU Releases Mini Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS)

JDSU released a new wavelength selective switch (WSS) product designed as a low cost solution for traffic management in the metro and access areas of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks.


The new Mini WSS, which is half the size of typical WSS offerings, provides colorless switching, or the ability to direct wavelengths from and to any port. It is scalable from 1X2 to 1X9 applications.


The WSS switching technology is one of JDSU's three ROADM-enabling technologies. In addition, JDSU offers planar lightwave circuit (PLC) and wavelength blocker technology to address various market needs.


In the second quarter of fiscal year 2008 (October through December, 2007), JDSU shipped 2,500 ROADMs.http://www.jdsu.com

Telenor Picks Alvarion

Telenor Telecom Solutions AS awarded a framework agreement to Alvarion to purchase WiMAX solutions. The contract has an option for other Telenor subsidiaries and affiliates as well. Financial terms were not disclosed.

AMCC Announces10GbE LAN/WAN PHY Device for Metro-Ethernet

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) announced a 10GbE PHY for 10GbE, 10G Fibre Channel, and WIS (OC-192/STM-64) network applications. The new S19263 represents AMCC's second device in its MEtrON (Metro Ethernet Optical Networks) product family. It is a highly integrated XAUI to XFI physical layer integrated circuit for Ethernet and Fibre Channel LAN and WAN applications based on SFP+ or XFP optical modules. It is also pin-to-pin compatible with AMCC's recently announced PEMAQUID S19258.


Significantly, the new device supports operation in a -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C industrial temperature environment, critical for Metro-Ethernet and Carrier Ethernet applications. It is also fully compliant to IEEE(R) 802.3-205 and XFP4.5 standards.

Duke Deploys 2,500 Cisco Access Points

Duke University will deploy an expansive 802.11n wireless network across its campus featuring more than 2,500 Cisco access points - the largest planned 802.11n wireless network in the world by any organization to date. The deployment will provide ubiquitous wireless coverage in academic halls, libraries, residence halls and other campus buildings.

During real-world tests, Duke experienced consistent average data throughput performance of nearly 130 Mbps per client with the Cisco Aironet 1250 Series access point, according to Cisco. Alcatel-Lucent Expands Services Agreement with NCR

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a global services agreement with NCR Corporation to provide standardized welcome center, help desk and network operations center services to distribution channels and enterprise customers. Under the agreement, NCR will provide service under the Alcatel-Lucent brand, creating a support organization covering more than 130 countries with a network of more than 10,000 service professionals.


This expands the existing North America level one services agreement between the companies.

Veraz Posts Q4 Revenue of $35.0 million, up 21% YoY

Veraz Networks reported Q4 2007 revenues of $35.0 million, which represents a year-over-year increase of 21% from the fourth quarter of last year. Fourth quarter IP product revenues were $20.9 million, an increase of 36% over the fourth quarter of 2006. Total revenues for year ended December 31, 2007, were $125.8 million, a 26% increase over total revenues for the prior year. IP product revenues for year ended December 31, 2007, were $79.4 million, a 68% increase over IP product revenues for the prior year.


For the fourth quarter of 2007, Veraz recorded net income of $2.1 million, including $0.7 million in stock-based compensation expense, as compared to the fourth quarter of last year with a net loss of $0.6 million, including $0.4 million in stock-based compensation expense. Veraz reported net income of $3.4 million for 2007, including $2.3 million in stock-based compensation expense, as compared to a net loss of $13.7 million, including $1.2 million in stock based compensation expense for 2006.
