Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress Wrap-up

There is no turning back from SDN and NFV as the future of carrier infrastructure, according to the presenters and delegates at this year's Layer123 SDN and OpenFlow World Congress, which was held last week in Düsseldorf, Germany.  The event attracted a sold-out audience of 1,300 -- over double the size of last year's conference.

Here are some highlights:

On this the 2nd birthday of NFV, ETSI's NFV ISG has generated a tremendous response from the industry and result is the many proof-of-concepts (POCs), many of which were on display at conference in Dusseldorf, said Francisco-Javier Ramón Salguero, ETSI NFV Performance & Portability EG / Telefónica.  All architectural elements are under study. Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV)1 is a new open source project that will provide a reference architecture for network operators.  The goal is enable industry collaboration to advance the evolution of NFV and ensure consistency, performance and interoperability among virtualized network infrastructures, explained Margaret Chiosi, Distinguished Network Architect at AT&T Labs.  The initial scope of OPNFV will be to provide NFV Infrastructure (NFVI), Virtualized Infrastructure Management (VIM), and APIs to other NFV elements, which together form the basic infrastructure required for Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) and Management and Network Orchestration (MANO) components.


Deutsche Telekom's Axel Clauberg gave a speech on how SDN/NFV are driving network transformation already. Core beliefs of the next gen operator should be:  Open Standards, OpenFlow, OpenStack, Open Interfaces, and a sincere desire to bring more simplicity to networking.  A key point of the presentation was that the industry should collaborate now to ensure that there is no vendor lockin allowed.

Once enterprises realize that cloud applications have changed the direction of network traffic to primary north-south, there will be a rethinking of enterprise network architecture, said Google's Geng Lin.  This will result in the removal of many dedicated appliances, such as load balancers and IDS/IPS. as enterprises simplify their networks by delivering such functionality as a virtualized network function. Given its own leading deployments of SDN/NFV to run its own operations, look for Google to enter this sector too.

The Open Networking Foundation marked a busy year of progress, said Dan Pitt, Executive Director of the ONF. The latest OpenFlow 1.3.4 release has added wireless, mobile; optical; security; and carrier-grade features.  The ONF is now offering 4 different certifications, supported by 6 accredited labs worldwide. Membership in ONF over the past year has grown from 113 to 148 companies.


Open Source is redefining the tech industry, said the Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin, including its OpenDaylight and OPNFV initiatives. To maximize the potential value of Opne Source within your organization, Zemlin says dedicated external R&D managers are needed to shephard the tremendous resources and intellectual property issues involved.

Akamai discussed the new paradigm of the elastic CDN powered by SDN and NFV.  The company is building an all-in-one cache architecture with KVM in an open, container-based deployment powered by OpenStack.  Service chaining will enable ecosystem services. It will support MANO. Akamai already has a POC underway with another Tier 1 operator and has an ecosystem partnership with Juniper Networks.

Nokia's Heikki Almay discussed SDN for Telco Cloud, arguing that the new infrastructure must be built for multi-tenancy as well as multi-app.  SDN for mobile networks is inherently in two domains: the WAN, where on-demand capacity must be allocated across access and aggregation equipment; and the Data Center, where automation and service chaining will redefine packet flow. As such, the Telco Cloud is inherently different when compared to enterprise clouds.

Dell's Arpit Joshipura explored the convergence of x85 computing and networking, arguing that while these industry sectors were separated at birth, the Open Networking revolution is finally causing their evolutionary paths to head in the same direction.  Dell also introduced its deployment-ready NFV platform, which consists of its new Intel Xeon-powered 13th generation PowerEdge servers, Dell Open Networking, and software from open ecosystem partners and open source distributions. The platform also includes foundational software and open interfaces for Management and Orchestration (MANO) for simple operation and ease of integration.

Coriant launched its Transcend SDN software suite, providing an advanced programming environment and open interfaces that empower on-demand, application-centric service agility and monetization of network assets.  The Coriant Transcend Orchestrator is based on the OpenDaylight Project.

Huawei cited progress in developing its FusionSphere platform for NFV and SDN based on OpenStack. Huawei is creating a distributed cloud data center solution (SD-DC2) based on FusionSphere.  The idea is to enable centralized resources scheduling and unified cloud services provisioning by integrating multiple data centers of various vendors' and service providers' into a single resource pool through the standard Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This would create large-scale resource pools, flexible management, and openness.

Procera Networks' PacketLogic/V Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) software solution has been benchmarked by the European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC) at 40Gbps with fully active Internet Intelligence functionality, running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment.  Specifically, the EANTC testing measured the performance of the PacketLogic/V solutions running on a dual socket Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 CPUs clocked at 2.30 Ghz and 18 cores with 64 Gigabytes of memory (RAM).

Huawei, KPN and China Mobile Complete VoLTE Roaming Call

KPN Netherlands and China Mobile completed what is believed to be the industry's first international Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based Voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming call.  The interconnection between Europe and Asia was enabled using Huawei's solution.

This IMS-based call was initiated by KPN Netherlands and connected by China Mobile utilizing IBASIS as a tandem office. It was tested to verify the commercial deployment of international VoLTE roaming. During the call, high-fidelity voice and video capabilities were successfully tested and provided a strong foundation for long distance communication.

Mr. Long Jiping, Vice President, Huawei Core Network, spoke about the test. He said, "Huawei is committed to promoting commercial VoLTE deployment globally. We feel honored to cooperate with KPN and China Mobile to complete this call. As 4G evolves Huawei will continue to work with both operators to stimulate a smooth network evolution from 3G. This will bring higher quality service experience to their users."

Telekom Austria Connects First Customer with G.fast

Telekom Austria Group's A1 domestic subsidiary, together with its technology partner Alcatel-Lucent, has demonstrated G.fast running a several hundred megabits per second.  Currently, G.fast is still in a testing phase at A1 and the launch of commercial operations is expected in 2016.

Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO Telekom Austria Group and A1 said: "We're proud to have succeeded in connecting the first customer in the world to our domestic A1 network with G.fast. This technology will enable us to offer urban areas data rates ten, even up to twenty, times higher than ever before. Fiber to the home remains our long term vision, but we consider G.fast as an intelligent interim solution until fiber will have a similar coverage as we have with copper now".

"With G.fast, fiber is deployed all the way to the basement of a building, with the final connection to the single living spaces being made with existing copper lines. This allows for a considerable reduction of expenses, as no costly rewiring at the customer premises is required. The data rates reached with G.fast will meet the needs of even the most demanding households over the next 10-20 years. If, in the meantime, extensive renovation works for the staircase of the buildings are planned, it will be up to the tenants to decide whether to install a fiber connection all the way to their living spaces", Ametsreiter continued.

A1 said it sees the potential for G.fast in roughly 400,000.  Households in Vienna alone.

  • In July 2014, Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, demonstrated the ability to carry 10Gbps over traditional copper telephone lines over a distance of 30 meters.  Bell Labs also announced a prototype technology that can achieve 1Gbps symmetrical over existing copper access networks.


  • The Bell Labs tests used a prototype technology called XG-FAST, which is an extension of the G.fast standard being finalized by the ITU. When it becomes commercially available in 2015, G.fast will use a frequency range for data transmission of 106 MHz, giving broadband speeds up to 500 Mbps over a distance of 100 meters.

  • Bell Labs said XG-FAST uses an increased frequency range up to 500 MHz to achieve higher speeds but over shorter distances. Bell Labs achieved 1 Gbps symmetrical over 70 meters on a single copper pair. 10 Gbps was achieved over a distance of 30 meters by using two pairs of lines (bonding). Both tests used standard copper cable provided by a European operator.
    Marcus Weldon, President of Bell Labs: “Our constant aim is to push the limits of what is possible to ‘invent the future’, with breakthroughs that are 10 times better than are possible today. Our demonstration of 10 Gbps over copper is a prime example: by pushing broadband technology to its limits, operators can determine how they could deliver gigabit services over their existing networks, ensuring the availability of ultra-broadband access as widely and as economically as possible.”
     



Algeria's DJEZZY deploys ALU's Microwave Packet Radios for Backhaul

Algeria's DJEZZY OTA, a division of Vimpelcom, is deploying Alcatel-Lucent's 9500 Microwave Packet Radio solution to upgrade its mobile backhaul network.  Alcatel-Lucent will also be providing DJEZZY (OTA) with its 7705 SAR A and SAM 5620


Microwave is more cost effective and practical for remote regions of the country. The MPR will be deployed in four zones out of a total of six, covering 67% of DJEZZY (OTA) s network.


Alcatel-Lucent noted that it's 9500 MPR solution is currently deployed in over 260 networks around the world.

GENBAND Joins HP OpenNFV Program

GENBAND has joined the HP ecosystem partners to help accelerate service providers’ transition to NFV.

The HP OpenNFV Program provides an open standards–based network functions virtualization (NFV) reference architecture along with HP industry-standard products and capabilities, offering service providers ready-to-deploy solutions that can enable the transformation from legacy networks to NFV and Software Defined Network (SDN)-enabled infrastructure.

CenturyLink opens Cloud Dev Center Near Seattle

CenturyLink has opened a cloud development center in Bellevue, Washington. Centurylink said the Seattle area was selected as the location for the facility due to the concentration of cloud companies and resources in the market.

CENX Confirms Multi-Million Dollar Service Orchestrator Order

CENX confirmed a new multi-million dollar order from a Tier 1 North American service provider who is extending their Cortx Service Orchestrator deployment throughout their mobile backhaul network.

NSFOCUS Unveils Anti-DDoS for Hosting SPs and Data Centers

NSFOCUS has launched an active DDoS attack mitigation appliance that defends against both known and unknown attacks and is specifically designed for hosting service providers, Internet data centers (IDCs), telecom carriers and managed security service providers (MSSPs).

The ADS 8000 boasts up to 40 Gbps of mitigation capacity with a single unit and provides hundreds of Gbps of larger scalable mitigation capacity via simple cluster deployment.

NSFOCUS said it is able to counter DDoS threats with up-to-the-minute behavior statistics, reputation mechanisms and mitigation algorithms targeted at new botnet-based DDoS attacks, providing a more granular and precise DDoS mitigation.


CALIENT adds OpenDaylight Plugin to SDN-Controlled Hybrid Packet

CALIENT Technologies announced a new plugin for the OpenDayLight (ODL) platform for providing programmatic control of it S-Series optical circuit switches. This builds on CALIENTs existing support for the OpenFlow API by extending the OpenFlow protocol to support circuit switching.



CALIENT's hybrid packet-optical platform adds an optical circuit switch to packet-based data center networks specifically to handle offloading of persistent data flows through express optical-layer paths.  The company said its new OpenDayLight plugin will allow applications and external controllers using the ODL framework to control CALIENTs S-Series switches via standard published OpenDayLight REST APIs, thus simplifying deployment in software defined data center networks.

OpenDayLight provides a very flexible software framework for controlling hybrid packet-optical networks and so it makes sense for CALIENT to pioneer the development of plugin functionality to support optical circuit switches,said Jitender Miglani, Vice President of Engineering for CALIENT. CALIENT intends to contribute this and future plugins to the open-source community to help harness the power of SDN in data center and metro networks.

In a future release, CALIENT will add a circuit manager to OpenDayLight. Circuit manager is a service with northbound REST APIs that interfaces with external orchestration engines/controllers that may want to manage CALIENTs S-series switch as part of their native application.

Zayo Rises 16% in IPO

Zayo completed its initial public offering of 21,052,631 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $19.00 per share.  The company offered 16,008,679 shares of common stock and selling stockholders offered 5,043,952 shares of common stock. The stock closed on Friday at $22, up 16% from opening price.  

The shares are trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ZAYO.”  


  • In August, Zayo introduced its Connect to the Cloud platform for helping enterprise customers adopt a hybrid cloud strategy. Zayo's Connect to the Cloud platform will provide a direct connect options to multiple cloud providers and over 500 data centers worldwide. The expanded program offers a direct connect option to many leading cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Softlayer.

  • In 2011, Zayo became one of the first providers to offer direct bandwidth up to 10G through the AWS Direct Connect portal and in 2013, announced it had become an Amazon Partner Network (APN) Technology Partner. As an APN, Zayo provides private networks with circuits to enable connectivity to each AWS Direct Connect location.
