Microsoft Debuts Xbox SmartGlass Linking Multiple Devices

Microsoft unveiled Xbox SmartGlass -- its vision for bridging entertainment between devices.



Xbox SmartGlass is an application for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and other portable devices that connects phones, PCs and tablets with an Xbox 360 console. The idea is to deliver companion content on the portable device for the primary content being watched or played on the big screen.



"With Xbox SmartGlass, we are lighting up entertainment across your phone, tablet, PC and TV in a completely new way," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.



Microsoft will launch Internet Explorer for Xbox this fall in all countries where Xbox and Xbox LIVE are available. This will enable Xbox users to surf the web using voice or gesture commands. Telstra Launches over NBN in Tasmania

Telstra launched its commercial services on the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Tasmania.

Ridgeville Telephone Deploys ADTRAN's Optical Networking Edge

Mexico's Cablevision Implements 100G with ALU

Cablevision, one of the largest cable operators in Mexico, will upgrade its transmission network to 100G to support services like high-definition streaming video, high-speed web access and advanced business applications.



Alcatel-Lucent is supplying Cablevision with 100G next-generation coherent technology, supported by the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). Cablevision’s network infrastructure represents the first 100G network being deployed in Mexico.

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Upgrades with Alu's IP/MPLS

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has selected Alcatel-Lucent's IP/MPLS solution to upgrade its network serving residential, business and mobile broadband customers. Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR). Alcatel-Lucent will also provide CHT with professional services, including project management, network design, installation and commissioning, software integration and operations.

ZTE Intros First 1.4GHz TD-LTE Devices

ZTE introduced a range of 1.4GHz TD-LTE terminals, including modules, USB cards, indoor CPE and outdoor CPE devices. The company has conducted testing of new 1.4GHz TD-LTE devices in Beijing.

Verizon Wireless Adds Samsung Galaxy S III LTE

Verizon Wireless has begun marketing the LTE-powered Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone.



Verizon Wireless is supporting Share Shot capability, which lets users create their own temporary photo sharing network with a group of friends who are nearby at the same party or event. Galaxy S III customers can take advantage of LTE to share live video broadcasts with their Facebook friends using the Color app. As an exclusive feature for Verizon Wireless, customers can live broadcast video with audio when using Color. The Galaxy S III also has a mobile hotspot feature that shares the4G LTE connection with up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.



Verizon Wireless is offering Samsung Galaxy S III will be available in 16 GB and 32 GB models for $199.99 and $249.99 respectively with a new two-year customer agreement. Customers will also have the choice of the Galaxy S III in two colors, Marble White or Pebble Blue. will need to subscribe to a 4G LTE mobile broadband data package starting at $30 monthly access for 2 GB of data.



The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is currently available in 258 markets, covering two-thirds of the of the U.S. population. Verizon Wireless 4G LTE will be in 400 markets covering 260 million people by the end of this year.

AT&T Teams with Acclaim Energy on Power Grid Monitoring

AT&T is collaborating with Acclaim Energy Advisors, a provider of energy management solutions for commercial, industrial, healthcare and governmental consumers, to provide power metering and control systems that enable remote monitoring and switching of loads from the grid to standby generators within seconds.

Lantiq Highlights IPv6-Ready CPE Status

Lantiq confirmed that its XWAY xDSL and network processor Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) and UGW software suite received the “IPv6 CE Ready�? designation after successful tests at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). This assures that manufacturers of home routers/gateways are enabled to develop future-ready solutions based on Lantiq chips and software. IPv6 certification testing was conducted on Lantiq’s portfolio of dedicated ADSL2/2+, VDSL2 and Gigabit Ethernet SoCs to ensure that customer premises router/gateway can be enabled to support IPv6 connectivity to the Internet.

DragonWave Cuts Back in Ottawa and Israel

Following its recently-completed acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks’ microwave transport business, DragonWave said it will eliminate 68 positions from the company’s workforce in Ottawa and Israel. DragonWave expects to save approximately US$6 million in annual operating expenses as a result of this staff reduction. DragonWave anticipates restructuring charges in the first quarter fiscal year 2013 as a result of the elimination of these positions to be approximately US$0.8 million, and a one-time cash usage in the second quarter of fiscal year 2013 of approximately US$1.5 million.



DragonWave announced a number of other changes, including the establishment of a distribution capability in Venray, Netherlands to complement its existing logistics capabilities in Ottawa and Penang, Malaysia. In order to better support its expanded global footprint DragonWave is staffing new regional subsidiaries in Mexico and Brazil and will increase the staff levels in certain other regional offices. This global presence will augment the previously-announced services arrangement between DragonWave and Nokia Siemens Networks in Italy, and an interim services agreement between the same parties that has been entered into pending the completion of the acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks’ microwave transport operations in China.
