Cable & Wireless Exits its US Business

Cable and Wireless plc will exit its US businesses by filing a Chapter 11 process for its Cable & Wireless America (CWA) operations and selling the assets for $125 million to Gores Technology Group. CWA is a provider of complex hosting and IP solutions for global enterprises. The companies said the Chapter 11 process would facilitate the sale by creating a substantially lower cost base, primarily through the elimination and renegotiation of certain lease and other contractual commitments.

Cable and Wireless plc, which said its intention was to exit the its US businesses for the least cost, will continue to be a provider for international communications to and from the US.

Xilinx Unveils New FPGA Architecture

Xilinx unveiled a new architecture aimed at enabling the rapid deployment of multiple domain-specific FPGA platforms. At the heart of the "ASMBL" architecture is a modular framework of silicon subsystems, enabling a new FPGA development methodology. It makes use of advanced flip-chip packaging technology and eliminates geometric layout constraints associated with traditional chip design such as hard dependencies between I/O count and fabric array size. The ASMBL architecture also addresses the increasingly more stringent requirements for on-chip power and ground distribution by allowing power and ground to be placed anywhere on the chip.

Xilinx plans to base future Xilinx Platform FPGAs on the new architecture. Its next generation Virtex Series Platform, slated for first half of 2004, will embody the new architecture and deliver more than 1B transistors in a single device.

"Moore's Law, as well as advances in packaging technologies, continue to propel programmable logic to new heights of capacity and performance" said Wim Roelandts, chairman and CEO at Xilinx. "The ASMBL architecture will allow Xilinx to further penetrate the $38 billion dollar logic markets with aggressive cost points never before possible."

Since its 1998 introduction, Xilinx has shipped over 10 million Virtex FPGA devices.http:// www.xilinx.com

Extreme Launches its BlackDiamond 10K Switch

Extreme Networks launched its new BlackDiamond 10K switch based on its fourth generation 4GNSS ASICs and a modular operating system designed for new levels of scalability, resiliency, security and extensibility. Unlike the first wave of 10 Gigabit platforms to hit the market, Extreme said its new switch not only delivers 10 Gbps line rate performance, but is built to handle vast increases in the number of flows traversing the core of a network. Six new, programmable ASICs provide 1.6 Tbps of processing capacity for hardware-based routing of 10 Gbps IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS traffic. The ASICs provide a hitless failover capacity to another switching fabric that is in-synch. They also deliver advanced packet filtering and monitoring capabilities for detecting traffic anomalies that could be associated with security threats to the network. Intrusion detection capabilities provide the means to act early against unusual traffic patterns that may constitute destructive viruses/attacks.

With the new BlackDiamond 10K switch, Extreme Networks is also introducing an all-new UNIX-based software platform. ExtremeWare XOS uses a modular architecture to ensure better scalability, security, resiliency and extensibility. Open XML and POSIX interfaces, coupled with a configurable Command Line Interface (CLI), enable ExtremeWare XOS and the BlackDiamond 10K to be integrated with other applications and equipment, such as VoIP gateways. For instance, through its recently announced partnership with Avaya, the Open XML compatibility could be used for a gateway to automatically discover the most adjacent switch, load a traffic monitor onto the switch, and thereby enable calls to be routed over the PSTN.

Extreme's BlackDiamond 10K switch begins shipping next week at a starting price of $90,000. It accommodates up to 48 10 Gbps interfaces or up to 480 Gigabit Interfaces. Pricing for a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port is $7,200 (U.S. list). Gigabit Ethernet ports have a list price of $666.

Time Warner Cable Partners with MCI and Sprint for Nationwide VoIP

Time Warner Cable, the second- largest cable operator in the U.S., announced strategic partnerships with MCI and Sprint for the nationwide deployment of Digital Phone residential VoIP service. Specifically, MCI and Sprint will assist Time Warner Cable in the provisioning of Digital Phone service to customers, termination of IP voice traffic to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), delivery of enhanced 9-1-1 service, local number portability and carrying long distance traffic.

Time Warner said the multiple-year deals with MCI and Sprint will help enable it to launch broadband telephony services across its cable networks nationwide. Partnering with Sprint and MCI eliminates the need for Time Warner to invest in a build out of new network infrastructure. The agreement also marks a major expansion for MCI and Sprint into the cable wholesale market.

Specific to the agreement, Sprint said it would provide the interconnection facilities between Time Warner's switch and the public telephone network for local and long-distance calling in 17 markets across the country. Sprint will also provide support for cable voice telephony through E911 management, directory assistance, operator services, voicemail and other local exchange carrier services. Sprint said it intends to expand the marketing of its telephony services to the cable market as an alternative to cable operators building their own voice infrastructure.

In addition to providing local points of interconnection to terminate IP voice traffic to the public switched telephone network, MCI will also deliver enhanced 9-1-1 service, local number portability as well as manage network integration and electronic bonding of both companies' order entry systems.

Time Warner Cable recently launched its own VoIP service in Portland, Maine and in parts of North Carolina. Its "Digital Phone" service provides unlimited local, in-state and domestic long distance calling for a fixed price.

"We are pleased to partner with MCI and Sprint and benefit from their experience in delivering high quality phone service, their focus on customer service, and desire to be at the cutting edge of VoIP network development," said Time Warner Cable Chairman and CEO Glenn Britt. "Capitalizing on their local points of interconnection, our broadband cable system and the efficiencies and flexibility of IP technology, Time Warner Cable is now poised to deliver consumers local and long distance telephony services more efficiently, at a lower cost, and with the reliability and quality of service that customers require."

Jonathan Crane, MCI executive vice president of Corporate Development and Strategy, said "This relationship represents the next evolution in consumer communications -- leveraging the added capabilities of cable and the global reach of the MCI IP network to create services that leave the old public switched network behind."http://www.mci.com

Vonage Plans International Expansion in Q1

"We have no intention of recreating the PSTN," said John Rego, CFO of Vonage, speaking at the Lehman Brothers' Fifth Annual T3 Conference in New York. Rego said Vonage's network is based on SIP, which is "robust, scalable and agnostic to voice, video or data... giving you a good idea of where we intend to go in the future." The business model is truly disruptive, he said, because it is broadband agnostic and is oblivious to physical location.

Vonage currently claims 70% of the broadband telephony market in the U.S., which he observed is still small compared to other markets internationally. Vonage is currently serving over 76,000 access lines and is adding about 2,600 per week. The company recently completed its 100 millionth phone call, still small by the scale of an ILEC, but significant for a VoIP provider. He noted that there is a potential market of 180 million residential phone lines in the country.

In Q1, Vonage plans to enter the Canadian market, followed by the U.K. and Switzerland. The company's flat rate pricing, which is currently available for U.S. and Canada, will likely be extended to Europe and later worldwide. Vonage is currently supporting local number portability and half of its customers are bringing the numbers with them when they join the service.

Rego also highlighted the company's integrated marketing campaign, which includes advertising on TV, radio and top Internet sites. The company has also launched a retail push through Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City and through partnerships with Earthlink, cable operators and others.

For less than $15 million investment, Vonage built-out the infrastructure to reach the top 100 U.S. media markets, whereas typical CLECs were spending about $10 million per market.

As for regulatory "red herrings," Vonage considers itself to be a provider of interstate "information services" as defined by the FCC and is therefore not required to be certified as a common carrier, said Rego. He also noted that Vonage pays into the Universal Service Fund as well as several state mandated funds, can comply with CALEA requirements, and pays access fees when terminating calls over the PSTN. On e-911 issues, Vonage is currently working with NENA, Intrado and several states to develop a broadband telephony solution. Rega believes the FCC will issue a ruling within a year that either declares VoIP as an unregulated service or adopts a "light touch" approach.

Rego predicts the company will be profitable by Q2. Churn is currently at 2.5% for new customers, with no contract required. The current infrastructure could support up to 250,000 users but could be scaled quickly as needed. Vonage-to-Vonage calls represent about 2% of traffic. As for new competition for ILECs, IXCs and cable operators, Rego said Vonage welcomes the additional visibility provided to VoIP services.
http://www.vonage.com
  • In November 2003, Vonage closed $35.0 million in new financing round led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), which invested $12 million. The money will be used to further the build out of the service, enhance marketing programs and develop new offerings. Vonage senior management participated in the round; capital raised to date by the company now totals $65.3 million.
