UK Broadband Activates LTE TDD 3.5GHz in London with Huawei

UK Broadband switched on its first 4G LTE system in London using TD-LTE technology in the 3.5GHz band.


UKB will operate a wholesale model, working with partners to offer commercial services from May 2012 to businesses, consumers and the public sector. The network will initially cover the Southbank and Borough areas of Southwark.


The network will use UKB’s 124MHz of spectrum in LTE bands 42 and 43 (3.5GHz and 3.6GHz). This allows the deployment of 6 x 20MHz wide channels that will enable UKB to deliver LTE Advanced speeds and enough capacity across the network to deliver Next Generation Access superfast broadband speeds to a large number of users simultaneously.


The first devices, jointly developed by UKB and Huawei, include indoor and outdoor units for high-speed wireless broadband to homes and businesses within the coverage area. Multi-mode mobile devices supporting TD-LTE, FD-LTE and 3G will be available from September 2012.


Huawei noted that this is the first LTE TDD 3.5GHz deployment in the world and the first commercial LTE TDD deployment in the UK.


UK Broadband is a wholly owned subsidiary of PCCW Limited, the holding company of HKT, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications provider.

Hi3G Chooses ZTE for LTE in Sweden

Hi3G has selected ZTE to deliver the next stage of its LTE infrastructure rollout in Sweden.


ZTE has delivered and installed the first stage of the network since it was first announced in March 2011. In this phase , ZTE will deliver the SDR-based infrastructure equipment to upgrade the operator's 3G network in Sweden.


The Hi3G network delivers a mix of FDD-LTE 800MHz and UMTS 900MHz services across southern Sweden, with TDD-LTE spectrum also being used in high demand areas including the major cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo.


Jörgen Askeroth, CTO of Hi3G, commented: “TDD-LTE gives us great capability to provide the best possible network capacity where demand is high, but we also have FDD-LTE because we believe that not all devices will support TDD in the future, and of course we have to support all users."


ZTE noted that its has worked on more than 30 commercial LTE projects with over 100 operators around the globe, including high-end markets including Spain, the United States and Hong Kong, with established operators such as Telenor, CSL (in the Telstra Group), Etisalat, SingTel, Commnet Wireless/NTUA and China Mobile.

Verizon Launches New Telematics Practice

Verizon has launched a new practice focused on developing telematics solutions and hired industry-veteran Martin Thall to lead the effort. Thall previously was chief executive officer and founder of Vehicle ICT Corp., a management consulting company.


The new Telematics practice will leverage the company's wireless, cloud and mobility platforms to develop and deploy integrated telematics solutions for key industries including automotive and transportation.

Dell'Oro: Service Provider Router Market Down 7% in Q4

The Service Provider Router market experienced its first year-over-year decline in two years as sales declined 7% to $2.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group.


Geographically, Dell'Oro noted weaker sales in the North America and Europe, offset by rising demand in Asia and Latin America,


The top five Service Provider Router vendors for 4Q11, in ranking order were Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and Ericsson.


"From the beginning of 2010 through mid-2011, router sales grew more than 20% each quarter, but started to decelerate last summer," said Shin Umeda, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "We think this is a temporary lull that will carry into the middle of this year, and we expect the market growth to accelerate in the second half of the year," added Umeda.
