AT&T Launches Cloud Storage for U.S. Government

AT&T launched cloud-based storage designed specifically to meet the robust security requirements of U.S. federal government agencies.

AT&T Synaptic Storage as a Service for Government is a multi-tenant, community cloud offer. It has the same features, policies, capabilities, and EMC Atmos technology as AT&T's commercial cloud storage offer but adds further security measures including:

  • Storage towers that are physically separated from other users' towers in the data center;
  • Separate logical cloud for government data; government customer data will not co-exist with commercial data;
  • A separate cloud portal partition for government agencies;
  • All government agency customers and their authorized users are assigned RSA hard token for 2-Factor Authentication.

Pacific Wave Adds 40G TransPacific Capacity

Pacific Wave has upgraded its U.S. West Coast peering exchange by adding a second 40 Gbps connection to Australia and New Zealand. The link goes from Los Angeles through the Big Island of Hawaii and on to Australia. It complements an exisitng 40 Gbps link from Seattle through Oahu to Australia.

Pacific Wave is a state-of-the-art international peering exchange designed to serve research and education networks throughout the Pacific Rim and beyond and features connection points at three US West Coast locations: the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seattle. It is a joint project between the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) with support from the University of Southern California and the University of Washington.

Google Collaborates with UCSB on Quantum Processors

Google is collaborating with the University of California Santa Barbara to design and build new quantum information processors based on superconducting electronics.

The research brings together Google's Quantum Artificial Intelligence team with John Martinis and his team at UC Santa Barbara.

The team plans to test new designs for quantum optimization and inference processors based on recent theoretical insights as well as learnings from the D-Wave quantum annealing architecture.

Seagate Ships First 8TB Hard Drives

Seagate Technology began shipping the world’s first 8TB hard disk drive. Target applications include cloud content, object storage and back-up disaster recovery storage.

The 3.5-inch hard disk drive is outfitted with enterprise-class reliability and support for archive workloads. It also incorporates a SATA 6 Gbps interface for integration in both private and public data centers.

Vubiq Builds 60GHz Millimeter Wave Systems with Vitesse

Vubiq Networks is using Vitesse Semiconductor's CEServices software, Serval-Lite VSC7416 Carrier Ethernet switch engine, and VSC8574 Gigabit Ethernet PHY for its latest generation 60GHz millimeter wave wireless system targeted at wireless fiber extension and 4G / LTE backhaul applications.

Vubiq (rhymes with "cubic"), which is a privately company based in Irvine, California, has developed a proprietary high-bandwidth, wireless link solution to enable gigabit speed transport and backhaul support with integration of full layer-2 networking capabilities, including software defined networking.
