Wave7 Optics Selected for FTTP in Baja California Sur

Wave7 Optics and Road 9, a network integrator, activated a triple-play FTTP infrastructure that will ultimately connect 5,000 homes and 2m000 hotel rooms in The Villages of Loreto Bay, a $2.2 billion development near the Mexican town of Loreto on the Baja peninsula, between the Sierra de la Gigantas and the Sea of Cortés. The project uses Wave7's "Last Mile Link" platform to distribute high-speed Internet services, RF video programming and VoIP-based telephone services to the residents and tenants of Loreto Bay. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Level 3's Information Services Group Files for IPO

Level 3 Communications' wholly owned subsidiary -- Technology Spectrum, Inc. -- has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to enable the sale of that subsidiary's common stock to the public in an initial public offering.


Technology Spectrum is the principal holding company for Level 3's information services group. Upon completion of the offering, Technology Spectrum's subsidiaries will include Software Spectrum, a direct marketer of software to corporations based in Plano, Texas, and (i)Structure, a provider of IT infrastructure management services to enterprises.


Technology Spectrum would receive no proceeds in this offering. Another subsidiary of Level 3's -- Level 3 Financing, Inc. -- is the sole selling stockholder in the offering. The net proceeds to Level 3 Financing from the offering would be used for general corporate purposes.

AOL Offers Unlimited Local Call with UK Phone Service

AOL will include unlimited UK local and national calls at any time of the day or night for the introductory offer price of GBP7.99 per month, without the usage limits common to many phone providers. AOL Talk will also include competitive mobile and international rates.


AOL Talk is based on Carrier Pre-Select. This enables anyone with a BT landline to switch their home phone provider without changing their phone number or line, and whilst continuing to use their home phone in the usual way. The AOL Talk service is available on all BT landlines and BT line rental fees continue to apply.

Sun and Microsoft Announce New Identity Specifications

As part of their technical collaboration agreement announced a year ago, Microsoft and Sun announced two new specifications that enable Web single sign-on (SSO) between systems that use Liberty and WS-* Web service architectures. Products that support the new Web SSO MEX Protocol and the bew Web SSO Interop Profile will enable companies to provide users with an improved Web SSO experience from their Web browsers. The specifications will be supported by Microsoft Windows Server and Sun Java Enterprise System.


The companies noted that over the past year they have made considerable progress building a productive work relationship at various levels and setting the foundation for a number of initiatives to address customer interoperability needs.

Microsoft to Offer PC Health Service for Consumers

Microsoft announced plans to deliver Windows OneCare, a consumer subscription service that will provide automated protection, maintenance and performance tuning for Windows-based PCs. Some key capabilities will include:

  • Defense against evolving threats, including automatically updated anti-virus, anti-spyware and two-way firewall protection.


  • Performance and reliability tools that perform periodic maintenance tasks such as disk cleanup, hard-drive defragmentation and file repair.


  • Backup and restore capabilities on CD and DVD.


Microsoft plans to release public beta versions later this year.
