Vodafone Global Enterprise Offers Management Portal

Vodafone Global Enterprise introduced a service that which combines and simplifies the management of fixed and mobile telecoms for multinational customers. The offering promises a single, online management view of both fixed and mobile telecoms services. Vodafone consultants will work with customers to assess and scope their current telecoms vendors and services, then develop a management plan aimed to deliver greater efficiency and reduce costs.

Additional key features include:

  • A single online view of spend across all telecoms providers

  • Full visibility of telecoms assets such as mobile and fixed devices

  • Ability to control and manage mobile devices

  • Capability to secure, lock and remotely wipe mobile devices

  • Visibility of telecoms vendor contracts and the current contract status

Huawei Showcases Live Commercial LTE with TeliaSonera

Huawei and Netcom (subsidiary of TeliaSonera in Norway) announced a successful showcase of "live" services over a commercial LTE network in Oslo, Norway after the world's first mobile broadband Internet connection was achieved early this month.

Versatile applications that have a high requirement on bandwidth and latency such as VoD (Video on Demand), video streaming, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), web surfing, video conferencing and video telephony were demonstrated under real outfield network conditions.

Huawei said that key LTE technologies such as MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex), enable download peak data rates of up to 150 Mbps in one LTE cell with multiple terminals. http://www.huawei.com

Broadcom to Introduce GPON Chips in China

Broadcom is preparing to introduce a new family of Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) integrated access device (IAD) semiconductors to telecommunications providers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in China this year. The Broadcom BCM6800 family of GPON gateway processors are designed to enable more cost effective optical network terminals (ONTs) or optical network units (ONUs) used in conjunction with service provider networks. http://www.broadcom.com

NSN to Acquire Nortel's LTE and CDMA

Nokia Siemens Networks will acquire Nortel's key wireless assets for $650 million. The deal brings together the assets of the two companies in the field of mobile radio access, especially in CDMA, where Nortel is a leading supplier. The acquisition of Nortel's profitable CDMA business would significantly improve Nokia Siemens Networks' presence in North America and make it a leading supplier of wireless infrastructure products in the region.

NSN said the acquisition will also help it gain momentum in LTE.

The transaction would see more than 2,500 Nortel employees -- largely located in Ottawa and Dallas but also including employees in Mexico and China -- transferred to Nokia Siemens Networks. Approximately 400 of those employees are focused on LTE research and development, and would enhance the ability of Nokia Siemens Networks to provide innovation and strengthen its position in LTE, where it is already working with customers such as NTT Docomo in Japan. The support and development of Nokia Siemens Networks' existing product lines would be unaffected by this acquisition.

"This agreement provides an important strategic opportunity for Nokia Siemens Networks to strengthen its position in two key areas, North America and LTE, at a price that makes good economic sense," said Simon Beresford-Wylie, Chief Executive Officer of Nokia Siemens Networks. "It also represents stability for Nortel's existing customers and offers a great opportunity for employees to move into a stable future with an industry winner. The R&D organization in Canada would become a long-term wireless center of excellence within Nokia Siemens Networks, complementing our other global sites."

Export Development Canada (EDC), Canada's government-owned export credit agency, is supporting this transaction with a USD 300 million loan commitment.

Due to Nortel's restructuring process, the transaction is subject to the approval of the United States Bankruptcy Court and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

IEEE Approves Broadband Over Power Lines MAC/PHY

The IEEE working group devoted to developing a standard for Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) has approved provisions for a MAC/PHY and Inter-System Protocol.

In a press statement, the IEEE said it is developing a new standard, IEEE P1901, "Standard for Broadband over Power Line Networks: Medium Access Control and Physical Layer Specifications." When completed, the project will present a standard for high speed (>100 Mbps at the physical layer) communication devices via alternating current electric power lines, so-called Broadband over Power Line (BPL) devices.

Technical Subgroup 2 (TSG2), which is dedicated to FFT and Wavelet MAC/PHY, presented thirteen revised chapters of the draft Standard on MAC/PHY layers and security.

Technical Subgroup 4 (TSG4), which is dedicated to coexistence, presented a draft annex describing the Inter-System Protocol (ISP) that enables various BPL devices and systems to share communication resources (frequency/time) when installed in a network with common electrical wiring. ISP will allow P1901-compliant devices and ITU-T G.hn-compliant devices to co-exist. The protocol provides configurable frequency division for Access and time division for in-home with a granularity compatible with the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the most demanding audio and video applications.

Axerra Cites Pseudo-Wire Deal with Tier-1 MSO

Axerra Networks announced that a US Tier-1 MSO has started mass deployment of its AXN pseudo-wire products. The AXN solution enables the MSO to offer its Mobile Network Operator (MNO) customers both legacy T1 and next generation mobile backhaul services over its existing nation-wide packet network.

Axerra's AXN Pseudo-Wire Access Devices are being deployed at cellular tower sites and AXN Pseudo-Wire Gateways are being deployed at Mobile Switch Center (MSC) sites. The end-to-end network is being managed using Axerra's AXNVision Pseudo-wire network management suite.

The company noted that to date it has received equipment orders and has shipped product for MSO services deployment to over 1,500 towers in support of multiple Tier-1 (MNO) end customers.

GigOptix Wins DARPA Research Contract Extension

GigOptix has won an extension of their contract with DARPA MTO and with SPAWAR PACIFIC as the contracting agency. The additional work requested is to fabricate low driving voltage, broadband Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulators using GigOptix's Electro-Optic (EO) polymer material for operation at very low temperatures for applications in supercomputers. The extension of $346,000 brings the total value of the contract to approx $6.1M and opens new areas for use of the modulators.
