c, the Regional Internet Registry for the Asia Pacific, has selected Nominum's Foundation Authoritative Name Server (ANS) to scale its network.



APNIC is responsible for allocating and assigning Internet Protocol (IP) address space (both IPv4 and IPv6) and Autonomous System (AS) numbers, and making "in-addr.arpa" domain delegations.



As part of the critical public Internet infrastructure, APNIC has stringent demands for authoritative name server performance, reliability and functionality. In evaluating solutions to handle the reverse IP-address to host-name mapping for the entire Asia Pacific region, APNIC sought a product that had high throughput and operational stability for both IPv6 and IPv4, and supported DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). The ability to make zone alterations in real time and to reconfigure servers without lengthy server restart times was essential.



Because some of APNIC's servers are located in the busy Internet exchanges of Japan and Australia, it was also necessary to have exceptionally high throughput and very low response times in addition to high levels of availability.



Nominum said its Foundation Authoritative Name Server (ANS) was selected because it delivers very high performance in terms of query responses per second, and it can be configured and managed remotely without the need for downtime.

Nationwide Internet2 Network Now Complete

The Internet2 initiative completed the rollout of its new nationwide network infrastructure, which boasts an initial capacity of 100 Gbps nationwide and bandwidth-on-demand capabilities. The new Internet2 infrastructure provides a uniquely scalable platform on which to build side-by-side research networks.


Beginning in January 2008, the DCN will enable researchers to provision up to 10 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth on demand. The new infrastructure also enables long-term dedicated point-to-point optical circuits up to 10 Gbps on separate wavelengths as part of the organization's WaveCo service.

Quantum Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Riverbed

Quantum Corp. filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California against Riverbed Technology. According to the complaint, Riverbed has infringed, and continues to infringe, a Quantum patent by selling products that employ a method of data de-duplication covered by this patent.



Data de-duplication technology, which eliminates redundant data for storage on disk and transmission via networks, is fundamentally changing the storage and networking landscape. It dramatically increases effective disk capacity over that of conventional disk, thereby enabling users to retain data on fast recovery disk for months instead of days, and significantly reduces the bandwidth needed to transmit such data between sites.

Allot Trims Revenue Outlook for 2007

Allot Communications, which supplies IP service optimization solutions based on deep packet inspection (DPI) technology, trims its financial guidance. The company now expects to report revenues for 2007 in the range of $32 million to $35 million, which is lower than its previous guidance. Q3 revenues will be approximately $7.0 million.



Allot cited slow sales during Q3 coupled with delays in customer purchase decisions due to growing interest in its newly introduced 10GB Service Gateway product. In addition, during the quarter the company received a $2 million order from a major telecom operator in Latin America. The company expects that revenues from this order may be recognized over an extended period of time, most likely commencing during 2008.

Ubiquiti Networks introduced a 700MHz WiFi radio designed for long-distance, outdoor broadband wireless and public safety applications. The XR7 is a compact radio module supporting 32-bit mini-PCI Type IIIA standard and features high output power (600mW), extended temperature operation, and a unique receiver design which provides excellent noise immunity and sensitivity performance.

Ubiquiti said its XR7 leverages a variety of advanced features including scalable channel bandwidths of 5/10/20/40 MHz, advanced QoS, and 256-bit AES security. The radio, which based on silicon and software solutions from Atheros Communications, has been tested to link beyond distances of 50 km. The company claims its solution can achieve TCP/IP data rates greater than 50Mbps.

UNH Interop Lab Builds 10 Gig Data Center Fabric

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) hosted a "10 Gigabit Ethernet Technology Summit" as part of its efforts to verify standards conformance and interoperability between 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches, cables, 10GBASE-T data ports and iSCSI storage devices.



During the event, nearly 40 companies collaborated to build what is described as the largest multi-vendor 10 Gigabit Ethernet unified data and storage fabric ever deployed. Such a "unified fabric" using high-performance Ethernet for data and storage is seen as an alternative to the current practice of wiring such networks with a mix of Ethernet as well as closed and proprietary technologies.



The 10 Gig Tech Summit test plans encompassed a mix of typically deployed and emerging 10 Gigabit Ethernet technologies, including LRM, SFP+ and XFP optical interconnects, CX4 copper, backplane Ethernet ports, iSCSI targets and initiators, iWARP and RDMA services, 10 GBASE-T devices and 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching.



UNH-IOL said the 10GBASE-T devices were shown to interoperate between four connectors at 100-meter lengths. The 10 Gigabit fabric successfully incorporated iSCSI targets and initiators running open source and commonly used commercial software and successfully passed emulated IP voice and video data between servers and switches.

ECI Telecom Enhances its Hi-FOCuS MSAN for IPTV

ECI Telecom has enhanced its Hi-FOCuS-5 Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) with new MSAN's new traffic management capabilities for improving the delivery of IPTV and other video services. ECI's MSAN broadband access platforms currently support over one million IPTV subscribers.



ECI said these new capabilities allows carriers higher flexibility when deploying video networks, through higher and more differentiated QoS granularity, as bandwidth can be managed at different levels, depending on the service requested. The platform is also able to distinguish multicast traffic from unicast traffic within the same stream and prioritize them to avoid traffic congestion towards the network.



Additional new features increase the capacity of the platform, allowing up to 10G per service slot. ECI features an any-card, any-slot architecture, allowing the coexistence of all service types, such as video, voice and high-speed data alongside different access technologies and various protocols (such as Layer 2 and Layer 3).



In addition, ECI is also introducing improved service blades, including a higher density VDSL2 card supporting 48 subscribers; a new, four-port GPON blade supporting up to a 128 split; and support for non-blocking 64 concurrent voice lines. Ericsson unveils its new EMN120 Ethernet Metro Access Node, which is designed to serve as a Layer 2 and Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation node with optional 10 GE uplinks. The EMN120 expands the Ericsson EDA broadband access portfolio to include Metro Ethernet products and strengthens Ericsson's Full Service Broadband offering.



Ericsson said the new EMN120 complements both the OMS Ethernet Transport portfolio, which tightly couples the packet aggregation capability with Optical/WDM integration for a reliable transmission over fiber, as well as the Redback SmartEdge portfolio, which provides IP Service Intelligence.

Alcatel-Lucent announced Release 5 of its 1626 Light Manager (LM) WDM platform, adding capabilities that address the demand for increased capacity, flexibility and manageability.

The 1626 LM Release 5 provides a fully tunable and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplex (T&ROADM) architecture. Wavelength services can be remotely provisioned end-to-end, in minutes with no manual intervention. Additionally, the platform is designed to scale from 10G to 40G wavelengths seamlessly.



Specifically, the product incorporates wavelength selective switch (WSS) technology to perform wavelength rerouting in multiple directions (or degrees) within the network. In addition, its fully tunable architecture allows operators terminating any wavelength ("color") in any given point of the network, as service interfaces can be colored from the network operations center (NOC) as necessary according to the specific wavelength.



Furthermore, the Alcatel-Lucent 1626 LM Release 5 has a fully programmable grid (50GHz and 100GHz) for supporting any mix of 10G and 40G wavelengths over the same fiber. The 40G wavelength transport functionality can be delivered either over the WSS-based tunable & programmable architecture or over existing 1626 LM deployments as a smooth upgrade path. As the support of 40G wavelengths is native and not emulated (e.g. 4 x 10G), this makes the 1626 LM a high capacity photonic platform able to transport up to 80 wavelengths at 40G (3.2 Tbps) per each direction.

DSL Forum: IPTV Users Top 8 Million, Broadband at 313 Million

The number of IPTV users worldwide has topped 8 million. Europe added 3 million IPTV subscribers in the 12 months to 30-June-07, making it the strongest market in terms of growth (up 231% in 12 months) and total subscribers (now 5 million).



"Top markets like France (2,550,000 customers) and Hong Kong (938,000
customers) show that IPTV can be deployed rapidly to large numbers of
subscribers, if the market conditions are right," said Point Topic Senior
Analyst John Bosnell.



According to data provided for the DSL Forum by Point Topic, the total number of broadband access lines worldwide has topped 313 million. DSL remains the most popular access technology with over 200 million installed lines.

AT&T will acquire spectrum licenses in the 700 MHz frequency band from Aloha Partners for $2.5 billion in cash. The spectrum licenses cover areas with approximately 196 million people.



AT&T said the transaction enhances its spectrum position by adding 12 MHz of spectrum covering 196 million people in 281 markets. The spectrum covers many major metropolitan areas, including 72 of the top 100 and all of the top 10 markets in the United States.
