Streamcore Debuts Managed Services Platform for Service Providers

Streamcore, a start-up based in Paris with close ties to France Telecom Labs, introduced StreamSense 5.1, a multi-tenant platform for service providers to offer next generation managed services for application performance and monitoring over MPLS or IP VPNs.

Streamcore's core technology uses fast packet inspection to examine both a packet's IP address and session behavior. The system then provides an automated view of application and network traffic. Application can then be tuned according to the amount of traffic, instantaneous bandwith utilization or number of active users.

The StreamSense service enabling platform centrally provisions and manages services such as real-time network and application monitoring, fine-grained and business-level reporting, and application delivery and performance control through advanced QoS controls and automated application control features with alarms and thresholds. The platform also lets service providers provision customized web portals with personalized dashboards and self-configured PDF reporting, providing both real-time performance statistics and troubleshooting tools. Via the portal, customers may also optimize application performance with application optimization features.

Streamcore said one deployment scenario for its platform is to sit centrally at the service provider or customer data center and report on all the downstream branches without the use of probes. In another deployment, StreamSense can be deployed at the customer's edge for service providers already providing managed router services at the customer edge. Additionally, StreamSense can be deployed at the provider's edge or POP (without imposing on service providers to deploy probes at the customer premise). StreamSense controls any of the above configurations from one centralized management console with carrier grade scalability.

Earlier this year, Streamcore opened its US headquarters in Emeryville, California. The company claims 200 global customers across 15,000 sites, including customers such as L'Oreal, Brinks and Philips.

Gear6 Caching Appliance Delivers Over 872,000 I/O Operations Per Second

Gear6, a start-up based in Mountain View, California, reported breakthrough I/O performance results for large scale network-based caching designed for massive compute grid.

Gear6 said throughput testing of its CACHEfx appliance reached 872,291 IOPS with an average response time of 0.53 milliseconds and sustained bandwidth of 2.8GB per second. Bandwidth intensive testing achieved a sustained 5GB per second while delivering 162,292 IOPS.

The company's CACHEfx appliances attach to the network using standard Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and support any NFS-based file system, including clustered file systems. Centralized storage caching extends the capabilities of existing compute clusters and storage systems without requiring changes to applications, file systems, or storage management software.

Load testing was conducted using an I/O load generator configured to drive a wide range of workloads. The throughput test simulated an IOPS- and latency-intensive workload characterized by many small-sized operations. This test consisted of 60 clients accessing data from the CACHEfx appliance with a 4KB block size. The bandwidth-intensive test modified the workload such that there were fewer larger-sized operations. This test consisted of 74 clients accessing data from the CACHEfx appliance with a 32KB block size.

Sandia National Labs Deploys Woven's Ethernet Fabric

Sandia National Laboratories is deploying Woven Systems' EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch in a 128-node compute cluster. Woven's EFX 1000 delivered sustained 10 Gbps Ethernet throughput in a large remote direct memory access (RDMA) cluster during testing by Sandia at its Livermore, California laboratory. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Ethernet Fabric utilizes Woven's Active Congestion Management technology with latency-minimizing routing algorithms to balance traffic flow across the mesh fabric. Woven said its technology also detects switch or link failures, and automatically re-routes traffic to an alternate path in less than 10 ms, providing resiliency with no lost network connections and time outs. The companion Woven Dashboard performance monitoring application, also being used by Sandia, automatically discovers and graphically depicts the fabric's topology, and offers a constant, at-a-glance display of the load-balancing effect of the Active Congestion Management process.

Woven Systems Enhances its Ethernet Fabric Architecture

Woven Systems, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, is extending its flagship EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch with a 48-port Gigabit Ethernet "Top of Rack" edge switch and new fiber optic interfaces.

The Woven Ethernet Fabric architecture leverages standard 10Gig Ethernet technology with custom-ASICs that deliver Active Congestion Management to create a multi-path, Layer 2 meshed fabric for high-performance computing clusters (HPC) and enterprise data centers. The architecture is designed to enable scalable, sub-5 microsecond latency with full 10 Gbps bandwidth to 4,000 ports. The company is currently shipping its EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch, a modular 10U switching platform that supports up to 144 non-blocking 10 Gbps Ethernet ports.

With this announcement, Woven is introducing its TRX 100 Ethernet Switch, a 1U, high-performance, managed Ethernet solution designed for top-of-rack server and storage aggregation and virtualization in data centers. It includes 48 standard 10/100/1000BASE-TRX auto-sensing ports, and offers two options for the four 10 Gbps Ethernet uplinks: powered CX4 for active copper and optical CX4 cables, or SFP+ for fiber optic cabling. The inclusion of four 10 Gbps uplinks minimizes over-subscription, and enables the TRX 100 to deliver peak I/O performance from quad-core processors.

Woven Systems is also introducing a new 12-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet XFP interface card adds both flexibility and range to the EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch product line. A single switch can support any mix of twisted-pair copper (CX4) and fiber optic interfaces required to connect TRX 100 or other switches. The XFP and SFP+ Small Form Factor Pluggable transceivers are optically compatible. The optical interface supports short- and long-reach connections for distances up to 10 kilometers, allowing users to extend their EFX 1000 data center fabrics across the metropolitan area for disaster recovery applications.
