Belgium's Voo Selects NSN + Juniper for Ethernet Backbone

Belgium's VOO, which provides TV, high-speed Internet access and fixed telephony services to more than 1.2 million subscribers throughout Wallonia and Brussels, has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to supply and support Juniper Networks' MX-series Ethernet Services Routers and EX-series Ethernet switches for its network backbone. The new network will enable VOO to deliver fast, reliable and customizable multiplay services. Financial terms were not disclosed.


Nokia Siemens Networks' worldwide capability in deploying operator infrastructure equipment and support services helps VOO create an IP network that will scale to meet the needs to their subscribers. At the same time, Nokia Siemens Networks' extensive service capabilities ensure unsurpassed carrier class reliability to VOO.


VOO's IP backbone consists of MX960 Ethernet Services Routers delivering up to 960 Gbps of switching and routing capacity. The Juniper Networks EX 4200 series Ethernet switches were selected by VOO for their high throughput, interoperability and low energy consumption.

Isocore Integrates MPLS and Carrier Ethernet Services across Domain Boundaries

Isocore will host a public demonstration this week of the first ever interoperability of GMPLS controlled Ethernet label switching (GELS) enabling Ethernet transport of time-sensitive real-time services. The MPLS2008 public interoperability demonstration, taking place on October 23, at Isocore Interworking Lab in Reston, will also present the first ever demonstration of path computation across Autonomous Systems (Inter-AS) boundaries using the IETF PCE-based model for establishing traffic engineered MPLS Label Switched Paths (LSP). The co-existence of the GELS and PCE-PCC in one network offers providers the flexibility to dynamically control their Carrier Ethernet, and Large IP/MPLS networks that cross the administrative boundaries.


In addition, Isocore said its test event focuses on verifying the interworking of Provider Bridge (PB) and Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) with MPLS Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS).

Service Availability Forum Releases its Latest Specifications

The Service Availability Forum (SA Forum), which is an industry consortium that fosters an ecosystem for commercial off-the-shelf building blocks used in high-availability network infrastructure products, systems and services, announced the availability of Release 6, an enhanced set of specifications that for the first time addresses the interaction between hardware events and software entities.


Release 6 introduces a new service called Platform Management that bridges the SA Forum's Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) and Application Interface Specification (AIS), enabling greater service availability, application portability and platform usability.


The Platform Management Service (PLM) integrates the hardware world of HPI and the software world of AIS to provide a standardized system view and enable service availability. This representation allows developers to match configured systems with hardware that is actually present in a device, allowing software to easily access relevant hardware states using a standardized model.


Additionally, Release 6 provides significant improvements to the interfaces for HPI firmware upgrades and clarifies the process for hot swap management, further enabling application portability across a variety of hardware platforms. Other enhancements allow libraries to create threads controlled by the user and allow dynamic updating of resources in a running system.


Release 6 also includes enhancements to the Cluster Management Service (CLM) and the Availability Management Framework (AMF), making use of PLM's inherent fault correlation support. This enables application developers to create applications that must be highly available. The increased functionality enables processes doing global validation or multiple processes to react to the changes.


"Hardware-software interaction is a critical function for high availability applications," said Ulrich Kleber, SA Forum Technical Work Group chair. "The addition of Platform Management to the SA Forum family of services provides the final piece for implementers to build a complete carrier-grade base platform using SA Forum specifications."

RadiSys expanded its AdvancedTCA (ATCA) portfolio with the launch of two new products, including one designed for maximum subscriber density and another for lower-density subscriber areas. Both platforms are pre-validated with a variety of hardware and software components, thereby enabling Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) to develop and deploy revenue-generating services more quickly and more cost effectively. The rollout includes:

• The Promentum SYS-6016 platform is a high-capacity 16-slot solution that provides the maximum number of billable application slots in an ATCA carrier-grade platform, and delivers 10-Gigabit switching, packet processing, and media processing capabilities. It comes standard with the Promentum ATCA-2210 10-Gigabit switch and control modules which provide highly integrated centralized functions such as switching, shelf management, network-timing and system management capabilities. In addition, the ATCA-2210 supports the RadiSys switching software that has been hardened and now running live in deployed networks. Broadcom Posts Q3 Revenue of $1.298 Billion, up 37% YoY

Broadcom reported Q3 revenue of $1.298 billion, an increase of 8.1% compared with the $1.201 billion reported for the second quarter of 2008 and an increase of 36.7% over the same period last year. Net income computed in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for the third quarter of 2008 was $164.9 million, or $.31 per share (diluted), compared with GAAP net income of $134.8 million, or $.25 per share (diluted), for the second quarter of 2008, and GAAP net income of $27.8 million, or $.05 per share (diluted), for the third quarter of 2007.

Tellabs Posts Q3 Revenue of $424 Million, Down 7%

Tellabs' third-quarter 2008 revenue totaled $424 million, down 7% from $458 million in the third quarter of 2007. Revenue from outside North America rose 21% from the year-ago quarter to $160 million. On a GAAP (U.S. generally accepted accounting principles) basis, Tellabs recorded a loss of $999 million or $2.51 per share in the third quarter of 2008, including a non-cash goodwill impairment charge of $988 million, restructuring charges for plans announced in previous quarters of $9 million, other charges totaling $11 million, and a non-cash tax charge of $6 million.


Some highlights:

• Broadband -- Third-quarter 2008 revenue from the broadband segment totaled $260 million, down 7% from $279 million in the third quarter of 2007. Within the broadband segment: data networking revenue reached a record $68 million, up 19% from $57 million in the year-ago quarter; access revenue was $113 million, down 28% from $157 million in the year-ago quarter; managed access revenue was $79 million, up 20% from $65 million in the year-ago quarter.



• Transport -- Third-quarter 2008 transport revenue totaled $109 million, down 11% from $123 million in the year-ago quarter.



• Services -- Third-quarter 2008 services revenue was $55 million, compared with $56 million in the year-ago quarter.

"Tellabs successfully executed in the third quarter, achieving record data and IP networking revenue, strong revenue outside North America and higher gross profit margins. Unfortunately, we need to further reduce our workforce and write down goodwill," said Rob Pullen, Tellabs president and chief executive officer.
