Alcatel-Lucent signs EU's Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption

Alcatel-Lucent has signed the European Union's Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment, agreeing to make "all reasonable efforts to achieve the power consumption targets defined in the Code of Conduct for at least 90 percent of the total port count of new model items introduced."

"Alcatel-Lucent understands the concern our customers have about the impact their networks have on the environment, and we have taken an advanced, structured and holistic approach toward developing eco-sustainable solutions. A key component of our program is to build smarter, eco-sustainable networks for them, while helping them reduce their total cost of ownership," said James Watt, Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel-Lucent Carrier Group.

Alcatel-Lucent said it will annually provide the European Commission with information concerning the energy consumption of the broadband equipment covered by the Code of Conduct. This is equipment primarily deployed into service providers' networks, but Alcatel-Lucent also agreed to include certain equipment typically deployed at businesses or homes, such as DSL terminals and optical networking terminals.

  • In 2008 Alcatel-Lucent committed to improving the energy efficiency of key products by at least 20 percent over the next two years, and that year Alcatel-Lucent developed eco-declarations for more than 95 percent of its product portfolio. These summarize the impact these products have on the environment, taking into account characteristics such as energy consumption, emissions, material content, packaging and disposal concerns.

Singapore's Nucleus Connect Selects Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent

Nucleus Connect, which has been appointed by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) as the operating company (OpCo) to design, build and
operate the active infrastructure for Singapore's Next Gen National Broadband Network, has selected Huawei Technologies and Alcatel-Lucent as primary vendors. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Huawei has been awarded a seven year contract to provide the end-to-end full turn-key active network solution and professional EOT (Establish, Operate, Transfer) services for the entire Next Gen NBN. The offering includes 80-Tbps IP core Clustering Router, Next Generation DWDM optical transmission, Aggregation Service Router, Terabit GPON access platform, Carrier Ethernet Switch, Multi-service ONTs and the Unified network management system for the entire active network.

Alcatel-Lucent was selected as the systems integrator for its business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS). Alcatel-Lucent's solution is built using strategic partners' off-the-shelf best of breed software products using service-oriented architecture (SOA) and data modeling is in accordance to the TM Forum SID (shared information data) model. Key functionality includes fulfillment (customer management and order handling, order management, service and network activation); Assurance (fault management, performance and QoS management, SLA management, and ITIL processes for incident, problem and change management); Billing (rating, billing, invoicing); Operations support (network and service inventory, workforce management and business intelligent reporting); and Applications enablement (SDP platform to enable on-boarding of RSP services). Alcatel-Lucent said its solution will fully support Nucleus Connect's wholesale business model.

Singapore's Next Gen NBN will be the world' s first Open Access FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) network using GPON & Active Ethernet access technology and multi-service MPLS IP Core technology. The project envisions bandwidth services ranging from 100Mbps to 1Gbps to residential users and business users. Nucleus Connect plans to commence commercial operations in Q1-2010. Actual availability of ultra high-speed broadband connectivity to homes and businesses in Singapore will depend on the roll-out schedule of the Next Gen NBN. The government of Singapore expects broadband connectivity of up to 1Gbps in 95% of homes and offices by December 2012.

The model set by the IDA is separated structurally and operationally. End-users will subscribe to services from retail service providers (RSPs), who rely on connectivity services in a wholesale model provided by the OpCo (who manages the active network). The OpCo in turn relies on the network company (NetCo) to provide access to the passive fibre network. Nucleus Connect, a wholly-owned subsidiary of StarHub, serves as the OpCo.

  • In early September 2009, OpenNet, the NetCo appointed by IDA, also selected Alcatel-Lucent's BSS/OSS and system integration expertise to manage its NetCo business operation in the frame of the Next Gen NBN.

  • In April 200, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has selected Nucleus Connect (StarHub) to serve as the Operating Company (OpCo) under the Next Generation National Broadband Network.

Symmetricom Announces IEEE 1588 Clock over Ethernet
