HSPA Mobile Broadband Gains Enterprise Traction
HSPA Mobile Broadband technology is growing in popularity amongst global organizations, according to a new survey commissioned by the GSMA of 1000 enterprises across the US, Europe and Asia Pacific.
The survey shows that on average, 12.3% of global workforces (per business) have access to mobile broadband. This figure is set to increase by 25% over the next 12 months.
A vast majority of enterprises surveyed revealed that of the equipment they provide to employees currently, more than 70% provide laptops, VPN access and various other remote access technologies. Because mobility has become one of the most important technological considerations, the provision of desktops is on the decline. This is further proved by the fact that 59% of global organisations have provided wireless internet to its employees.
While the outlook for enterprise mobile broadband technology globally looks extremely positive, the survey also revealed that only the more senior positions (60% of company directors, 62% managers) and company sales representatives (39%) are provided with mobile broadband devices.

Calix Introduces Fifteen New ONTs
Calix has extended its portfolio of optical network terminals (ONTs) from 9 models to 24, each optimized for unique service-provider deployment scenarios. The company said new applications, such as mobile backhaul, multi-dwelling unit (MDU) services, and small and medium-sized business (SMB) deployments, are emerging as large revenue opportunities that often complement residential fiber access networks. Each application requires a different set of ONT form factors and features. Each of the 15 new ONTs is optimized for one of four applications:
- Mobile backhaul -- Designed to meet the strict performance criteria imposed by mobile service providers.

HP Introduces "SkyRoom" Business Videoconferencing
HP unveiled its "SkyRoom" high-definition videoconferencing software that offers live, real-time collaboration for instant face-to-face meetings with no subscription fees.
HP SkyRoom, which is based on video and image communication technology developed in HP Labs, offers real-time collaboration for up to four people over a standard business network for $149. It will be included as a standard feature -- at no cost -- on select HP business desktop and mobile workstations and for free for a trial period on many upcoming HP premium business PCs and notebooks. HP SkyRoom can be used on workstations or PCs from Dell, Lenovo or Sun that meet minimum technology requirements. Companies now have the power to change the economics of travel and reduce their carbon footprint while preserving the value of personal human interaction.
The company said the breakthrough innovation behind its SkyRoom comes from the combination of high-definition, multiuser videoconferencing and a sophisticated capability to share display information more securely than with actual transfer of data and processing functions. HP SkyRoom's video engine enables all participants to see the presenter's display and each other through a multiway videoconferencing session. Vuclip Raises $6 Million for Cloud-based Mobile Video Transcoding
Vuclip, a start-up based in Milpitas, California, announced a Series B funding round of $6 million supporting its cloud-based, real-time transcoding service.
Vuclip said it is already delivering more than one million mobile videos every day to mobile users on more than 3,000 unique mobile handsets in 150 countries around the world, including India, China and the United States. Vuclip's service enables video to play on any phone with a mobile browser and native media player. The company partners with numerous content owners around the globe to deliver premium, targeted content to consumers that is monetized through Vuclip's proprietary dynamic ad stitching technology.
The new funding was led by Jafco Ventures. Existing investor New Enterprise Associates also participated in the round.

Verizon Wireless Outlines its Road to LTE
Verizon Wireless must focus not only on building the most reliable next-generation 4G LTE wireless network in the country -- and one of the first on the globe -- but must also take a proactive approach in developing the mobile ecosystem, said Tony Melone, Verizon Wireless senior vice president and chief technology officer, speaking at the 2009 PCIA Wireless Infrastructure Show. Melone confirmed the company's LTE network build plan, saying Verizon Wireless plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets in 2010 and cover virtually all of its current nationwide 3G footprint with the next-generation network by the end of 2013. So far, everything is on schedule.
"We can build all the bells and whistles and make lots of bold claims, but none of it will matter if the network - and all of the underlying infrastructure that supports the network - isn't fundamentally reliable," Melone said. "I can promise you that reliability will continue to differentiate Verizon Wireless in the marketplace. And that is also what will differentiate the suppliers we choose. There will be no substitute for good old-fashioned engineering: reliability built in at the start based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined approach year after year will continue to be our mantra."
Melone outlined a number of collaborative initiatives undertaken by Verizon Wireless:

- Verizon LTE Innovation Center - serving as an incubator for early development of both traditional and non-traditional products for use on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network. The company is actively working with several strategic partners to help the consumer electronics industry quickly bring products to market, helping to play the role of matchmaker between the hardware and device companies and the software and application developers.
- The Verizon Developer Community and V CAST Apps - a robust group of application developers are helping the company bring innovative applications to its customers through Verizon Wireless' forthcoming application store. V CAST Apps will launch by the end of the year so that developers can take advantage of the company's scale and distribution to market their applications to Verizon Wireless customers.
- Joint Innovation Lab - a member of the venture with China Mobile, Softbank and Vodafone, Verizon Wireless is at the forefront in developing a software platform that will allow developers to create their mobile applications to run seamlessly across multiple operating systems.
- Designated M2M Focus for Important Market Segments - Verizon Wireless recently formed a joint venture with Qualcomm aimed at machine-to-machine wireless services for a variety of vertical market segments, including healthcare, manufacturing, utilities, distribution and consumer products.
ARRIS Purchases Digeo for DVR and IP Video Engineering Talent
ARRIS agreed to purchase the assets of Digeo, including its intellectual property portfolio, for a cash purchase price of approximately $20 million. ARRIS plans to continue to develop and market the current line of Digeo Digital Video Recorder (DVR) products, including Digeo's Moxi Cable DVR and consumer HD DVR. Approximately 75 employees in Kirkland, Washington will join ARRIS.
ARRIS said the Digeo acquisition, along with the recently announced acquisition of EG Technology (EGT), provides it with substantial technical expertise in video networking and an innovative multimedia services delivery platform. The engineering talent and intellectual property acquired as part of these transactions will be combined with ARRIS' internal development efforts to accelerate the introduction of next-generation IP-based consumer video products and services. These new products will allow the Company's customers to cost effectively integrate and distribute new forms of personalized multimedia content throughout the home.

Nortel Seeks Sale of Packet Core Network Components
Nortel Networks is seeking a buyer for the assets of its Carrier Networks business associated with the development of Next Generation Packet Core network components (Packet Core Assets). The Packet Core Assets consist of software to support the transfer of data over existing wireless networks and the next generation of wireless communications technology, including relevant non-patent intellectual property, equipment and other related tangible assets. In connection with this proposed sale, NNL also expects to grant the purchaser a non-exclusive license of relevant patent intellectual property. Nortel will conduct an auction in regard to these assets.

Stoke Enhances Mobile Broadband Gateway for 3 LTE eNodeB Aggregation
Stoke released a software upgrade that enables its mobile broadband gateway to immediately support initial 4G/LTE deployments, while enhancing the profit potential of their current 3G networks. Specifically, the new StokeOS software and SSX-3000 platform now address the requirements of high availability, reduced operational expense, high performance and end-to-end security in eNodeB aggregation.
The new features in StokeOS 4.5 support deployments of all-IP backhaul architectures and allow carriers to leverage lower-cost open IP transport networks at the earliest stages of 4G/LTE. Capabilities in this software version include intra-device resilience, redundancy within individual Stoke SSX-3000 devices to reduce cost, power, and overall footprint, and support both for femtocells and LTE eNodeB base stations.

- Secure Communications: When open IP is used for wired or wireless backhaul, the signaling and subscriber traffic must be secured from the eNodeB to the operator core. The SSX-3000 is a high density, high throughput security gateway, providing line rate, low-latency, encrypted communications.
- Tunnel Management: Unlike user to network secure sessions, the interaction between eNodeB and the security aggregator is of "network to network" type, therefore traffic destined for user endpoints as well as to the eNodeB itself must be protected. The gateway must be able to distinguish between traffic to subscribers and traffic destined for the eNodeB in the same encrypted tunnel. StokeOS 4.5 also provides a range of tunnel initialization and recovery options to ensure non-stop operations.
- Deployment Flexibility: The gateway must be capable of supporting many types of home, pole-top and macro eNodeB units from a range of eNodeB suppliers to support expected operator LTE radio access network deployment models. It must also support different deployment architectures, providing operators with the freedom to select best-of-breed solutions for 4G, and 3G environments.
- Operational Efficiency: In lab and commercial trials, customers identified efficiencies in space and power usage, multiple functionality, high availability and high scalability as key operational metrics.
