Aricent Expands its LTE Solutions to Include Devices, Base Stations, Backhaul and EPC

Aricent has expanded its LTE solutions portfolio to include new software and frameworks for devices and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) systems. The company also announced enhancements to its existing IP backhaul offering.  These new capabilities add to Aricent's existing eNodeB offering to provide network OEMs and Device Manufactures with a an LTE design solution spanning user equipment, network access, IP backhaul, and EPC.

Aricent's LTE practice consists of software, frameworks and comprehensive lifecycle services to jumpstart LTE device and systems development and reduce engineering complexity and cost. These include:
  • LTE User Equipment Software Suite -- Aricent's LTE UE Software Suite is a complete software package for device and semi-conductor vendors including fully optimized Layer 1, Layer 2 protocol software with support for 100 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink data rates. The implementation ensures optimal power consumption, processor utilization and easy integration on multiple hardware platforms.

  • eNodeB Protocol Stacks and Framework -- Aricent's existing eNodeB offering provides a turnkey solution for radio access, from pluggable stack software to a pre-integrated and optimized software frameworks for Radio Access equipment, that have been benchmarked on multiple industry leading hardware platforms. Aricent's eNodeB Framework (eNBF) serves as a robust software platform for infrastructure providers planning to develop a complete LTE Release 8+ compliant eNodeB of varying densities (macro/pico/femto).

  • IP Backhaul -- Aricent's IP Backhaul solution is based on its industry-proven ISS Metro platform which offers pre-integrated Layer 2 switching solutions and can be used to build LTE and IP backhaul devices such as IP RAN Aggregation devices, Internet Offload Gateways, and Metro Ethernet devices.

  • Evolved Packet Core Protocol Stacks and Framework -- Aricent offers EPC protocol stacks as well as frameworks for the System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Gateway and the Mobility Management Entity (MME) Gateway. These include support for charging, QoS, high availability, lawful interception, and bearer-related features.

Motorola Introduces Android-based CLIQ with T-Mobile

Motorola unveiled its Android-based smartphone featuring a unique "MOTOBLUR" capability that automatically syncs contacts, posts, messages, photos and tweets from Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, and LastFM.

CLIQ is a GSM slider phone that features a 3.1-inch HVGA touch-screen display, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5 megapixel auto focus camera with video capture and playback at 24 frames per second, a 3.5mm headset jack, a music player with pre-loaded Amazon MP3 store application, Shazam, iMeem Mobile, and a pre-installed 2GB microSD memory card with support for up to 32 GB of removable memory.

MOTOBLUR taps in to the Android ecosystem. Every friend feed, status update, wall post, bulletin and photo upload is automatically delivered to a widget on the homescreen. Contacts are automatically synced to the phone from personal and work e-mail as well as social network accounts, and MOTOBLUR updates any changes friends or contacts make to their information.

MOTOBLUR will be available first on select Motorola devices in the fourth quarter with regional carriers worldwide. In the U.S., Motorola CLIQ with MOTOBLUR will be available exclusively with T-Mobile USA. Motorola DEXT with MOTOBLUR will be available with Orange in the United Kingdom and France, Telefonica in Spain and America Movil in Latin America.

Deutsche Telekom Expands HDTV with Harmonic

Deutsche Telekom has selected Harmonic's recently introduced DiviCom Electra 8000 universal broadcast encoder to expand the MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) HD video service to its T-Home Entertain subscribers throughout Germany. The deployment enables T-Home Entertain to offer the largest number of HD channels in Germany.

The Electra 8000 provides up to four standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) channels of superior quality constant bit-rate (CBR) or variable bit-rate (VBR) video using either MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC encoding, and can reduce bit-rates by 20 percent. The Electra 8000 also features integrated statistical multiplexing and a built-in broadcast quality up/down converter for differentiated services such as an HD broadcast of the premium SD lineup. This groundbreaking architecture, which can be easily upgraded with a variety of firmware options, eases operational requirements of density and power efficiency, and facilitates the launch of new value-added video services.

Huawei Supplies Metro Ethernet for Telefónica in Spain

Telefónica has deployed more than 100 sets of Huawei's CX600 Metro Services Platform (MSP) in its network in Spain. The MSP CX600 is part of Huawei's IP Transport Infrastructure for Multi-play Experience (IPTime) frame, featuring carrier-class multi-service transport and IP/MPLS. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Zayo Takes Over 60 Hudson St.

Zayo Group completed its previously announced acquisition of FiberNet Telecom Group, a provider of colocation and complex interconnection services. This makes Zayo the exclusive manager and operator of the 60 Hudson St. Meet-Me-Room in New York City, one of the world's largest interconnect exchanges. Zayo acquires similar colocation and interconnection responsibilities at 165 Halsey in New Jersey, 111 8th Ave. in New York City, and in key locations in Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.
Zayo also now gains FiberNet's revenue resulting from U.S. connectivity services it provided to and from carriers from Europe, Asia and South America.

Motorola Energy-Efficient IPTV Set-tops

Motorola has expanded its VIP series IPTV portfolio with new high definition (HD) set-tops that are compliant with US and EU initiatives for low-power consumption, including ENERGY STAR and the EU's Eco-Design Directives for Energy-using Products (EuPs).

The Motorola VIP2202E, VIP2262E, VIP1002E, VIP1003 and VIP19xx series set-tops are all compliant with the European Commission's Code of Conduct (CoC) v8. CoC v8 defines three different operating modes for complex set-tops - 'standby', 'auto power down', and 'on'. Depending on models and the market in which they are deployed, all of the Motorola units are compliant with ENERGY STAR and European CoC recommendations.

Qualcomm and GlobalWireless Sign 3G Femtocell Deal

Qualcomm and Global Wireless Technologies have entered into a CDMA femtocell (including femtocell modules) license agreement. Under the terms of the royalty bearing agreement, Qualcomm has granted GlobalWireless a worldwide patent license to develop, manufacture and sell femtocells that implement a CDMA2000 , WCDMA and/or TD-SCDMA 3G standard, including multi-mode femtocells that implement any one or more of these 3G standards as well as a 4G (OFDMA) standard.

AT&T Launches Online TV & Movie Delivery

PCs and other web-connected devices. The online content - provided by numerous content providers including ABC and NBC Universal (via an agreement with Hulu), CBS Interactive and dozens more - is available to all U.S. consumers

AT&T said the new online entertainment portal is part of its strategy to make popular content to consumers across the three screens at the center of their lives - the TV, PC and wireless phone. AT&T plans to add more TV programs and movies from other leading providers in the coming months.

"We know our customers want to be able to access their favorite content anytime, anywhere," said Dan York, executive vice president of content and programming, AT&T. "AT&T Entertainment provides the one-stop destination to watch your favorite TV shows and movies on your PC, wherever you have a broadband connection. AT&T U-verse TV and Internet customers who visit AT&T Entertainment can sign in to access U-verse Web Remote Access, a popular application that allows customers to schedule and manage DVR recordings directly from their PC.
