Intel and ASML Aim to Accelerate Transition from 300 to 450mm Wafers

Intel has entered into a strategic pact with ASML targeting next generation silicon manufacturing technologies. Among the agreements, Intel commits EUR829 million (approximately $1.0 billion) to ASML's research and development programs to help accelerate deployment of new technologies for 450-millimeter (mm) wafers and extreme ultra-violet (EUV) lithography by as much as two years.

Intel also agreed to purchase 10 percent of pre-transaction issued shares of ASML for EUR1.7 billion (approximately $2.1 billion) and commit to purchase an additional 5 percent of post-transaction issued shares as part of ASML's program to enable minority investments of up to a 25 percent equity stake to its largest customers R&D funding and equity investment agreements totaling EUR3.3 billion (approximately $4.1 billion).

"Productivity improvements driven by enhanced wafer manufacturing technologies, especially larger silicon wafers and enhanced lithography technologies with EUV are direct enablers of Moore's Law, which delivers significant economic benefits to consumers," said Brian Krzanich, Intel senior vice president and chief operating officer. "The transition from one wafer size to the next has historically delivered a 30 to 40 percent reduction in die cost and we expect the shift from today's standard 300-mm wafers to larger 450-mm wafers to offer similar benefits. The faster we do this, the sooner we can gain the benefit of productivity improvements, which creates tremendous value for customers and shareholders."

London Internet Exchange Builds SuperCore with Juniper PTX

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has deployed Juniper Networks' PTX Series Packet Transport Switch to create a new "SuperCore" network at the heart of one of the world's largest Internet Exchanges. The deployment, which went live in May, will be the second phase of a project announced by LINX in October 2011 to create a new network designed to meet current and future levels of customer demand for online activity.

Telindus serves as integrator for the project.

LINX’s 10 Points of Presence (PoPs) across London are connected by Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, the first phase of LINX’s new network deployment which went live in late 2011. Both the PTX Series and MX Series run on Juniper’s Junos operating system.
LINX interconnects over 400 networks, including service providers and content owners from 50 countries, providing data, video and voice connectivity to hundreds of millions of customers using mobile and fixed connections. LINX’s infrastructure provides connectivity for high-profile events streamed online, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, The Euro 2012 soccer championships, The Wimbledon Championships, and The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in addition to everyday rich content upload and download demand.

  • In June, Verizon confirmed plans to deploy the Juniper Networks' PTX Series packet transport switches in major markets in the U.S. and Europe by the end of this year. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deployment marked the first major announced customer for the new packet transport platform. The companies cited an initial capacity of eight terabits per second for the high-density MPLS platform, which underpins an upgrade of the Verizon global IP backbone to 100G Ethernet, supports customer access speeds of 10G and above and enables growth for FiOS, wireless and cloud services.

Gartner Predicts Public Cloud Services to Grow $200 Billion by 2016

Gartner is forecasting that worldwide IT spending will reach $3.6 trillion in 2012, a 3 percent increase from 2011 spending of $3.5 trillion -- a slightly faster growth pace than the 2.5 percent projection last quarter.

"While the challenges facing global economic growth persist — the eurozone crisis, weaker U.S. recovery, a slowdown in China — the outlook has at least stabilized," said Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner. "There has been little change in either business confidence or consumer sentiment in the past quarter, so the short-term outlook is for continued caution in IT spending."
Some bright spots: Enterprise spending on public cloud services to grow from $91 billion worldwide in 2011 to $109 billion in 2012. By 2016, enterprise public cloud services spending will reach $207 billion. The vast majority of this is for business process as a service (BPaaS), although platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are growing faster.

Worldwide IT services spending is forecast to reach $864 billion in 2012, a 2.3 percent increase from 2011.

Global telecom services is the largest IT spending market.

LG U+ Employs Spirent TestCenter for Terabit Router Testing

LG U+ is using Spirent's TestCenter to verify the performance of a leading vendor’s 100G Ethernet core network router and its ability to support more than 2.0 Tbps bandwidth. As it moves to an LTE network, LG U+ is planning to deploy 100G routers.

LG U+ used Spirent TestCenter with 10G and 100G Spirent HyperMetrics neXt modules to emulate several routing protocols including Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Protocol-Independent Multicast (PIM) and MPLS for IPv4 and IPv6, while generating a wide range of traffic patterns at full line rate for routing emulation. The tests validated the high-speed router’s ability to support QoS and IPv4/IPv6 routing capacity and data forwarding performance of 2.0 Tbps.
