LTE TDD Technology Experience Centre and Test Lab Planned for Kuala Lumpur

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) and ZTE are planning to open Southeast Asia's first 4G LTE TDD Technology Experience Centre and Test Lab in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The facility, which is also supported by China Mobile, will be established in early 2012 at P1's headquarters, also known as Packet Hub. Operators and vendors who want a taste of blazing wireless speeds of 120 Mbps and beyond will be welcome to utilize the facility.


The Centre will initially utilize P1's 2.6GHz spectrum for LTE TDD technology showcases and interoperability testing of the latest 4G devices. By the end of first half 2012, the network will also utilize P1's 2.3GHz spectrum.

USB Implementers Forum Releases Mobile Broadband Spec

The USB Implementer's Forum released a Mobile Broadband Interface Model (MBIM) 1.0 Specification for host and device connectivity for desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile devices. The specification supports multiple generations of GSM and CDMA-based 3G and 4G packet data services including the recent LTE technology.


MBIM 1.0 Specification Features:

  • Supports multiple IP connections per a single USB interface

  • Enables flexible, efficient and lower cost device implementations

  • Supports power-friendly implementations in diverse operating systems

  • Enables implementation of device-agnostic mobile broadband class drivers in diverse operating systems for desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile devices

  • Replaces cumbersome control channel mechanisms, such as AT-commands

  • Minimizes overhead and improves data transfer efficiency by sending raw IP frames, eliminating the need for Ethernet headers.

Huawei Tests First CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev.B Phase II

Huawei and Bakrie Telecom, a leading CDMA operator in Indonesia, announced the world's first CDMA2000 1x EV-DO (Evolution Data Only) Rev.B (DORB) Phase II trial on an existing CDMA network.


The trial in Java, Indonesia helps Bakrie Telecom to improve spectrum efficiency by leveraging 64QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and multi-carrier technologies, boosting the network's average downlink peak data speed to 9.3Mbps with two carriers.

Swisscom Targets One Million FTTH Connections by 2015

Swisscom announced an expansion of its FTTH rollout in eastern Switzerland in Chu4, which will connect all households and businesses by 2016. Construction work gets underway in March 2012 in the district of Masans, followed by Loequartier and Wiesental. The project will see Swisscom connect all 20,000 households and businesses in Chur to the high-speed network of the future.


Swisscom started its expansion of the fibre-optic network to households and businesses in autumn 2008, kicking off in Basel, Geneva and Zurich. It is now rolling out fibre to the home (FTTH) in over 30 towns and cities. At the end of September 2011, 320,000 households and businesses throughout Switzerland were connected to the fibre-optic network. Swisscom aims to connect one million households by the end of 2015, which equates to around one third of the Swiss population. The company is investing around 2 billion Swiss francs to achieve this goal.

Orange Extends MVNO Deal with Ortel Mobile

Orange announced a deal to host Ortel Mobile as a virtual mobile operator on its mobile network in France.


Ortel Mobile, which launched operations on the French MVNO market in early 2010, aims to maintain its position as market leader in the multicultural segment in France. Today Ortel Mobile is active as an MVNO in six European countries, and already uses the Orange network in Spain and Switzerland.


Orange said that by offering wholesale agreements to other operators it is both promoting competition and optimising the value of its network. Orange currently supports close to 3 million users from MVNO customers, representing around half of all French MVNOs. In total, MVNOs now represent 10% of the French mobile market.

FCC Issues its "Connect America" Order Reforming USF

The Federal Communications Commission officially released its Connect America Fund order for reforming the outdated universal service and intercarrier compensations systems with the goal of expanding access to high-speed Internet and voice services nationwide.


The CAF—with an annual budget set at no more than $4.5 billion, the same as the current universal service funding level—is expected to help connect 7 million Americans to high-speed Internet and voice in rural America over the next six years. The FCC estimates this effort will generate approximately 500,000 jobs and $50 billion in economic growth over this period.


The Order also phases down antiquated, opaque, regulated charges for the exchange of voice traffic among carriers—known as intercarrier compensation—and transitions to a simplified, uniform “bill-and-keep�? framework, which removes hidden subsidies on consumers' bills, increases efficiency, and eliminates impediments to the deployment of modern networks. Intercarrier compensation reform will provide benefits to all Americans through improved service and lower costs.

U.S. House Intelligence Committee Investigates Huawei and ZTE

The U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) has launched an investigation into Huawei and ZTE, citing "the threat posed by Chinese-owned telecommunications companies working in the United States."


U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08 and Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said the investigation will review the extent to which these companies provide the Chinese government an opportunity for greater foreign espionage, threaten our critical infrastructure, and further the opportunity for Chinese economic espionage.
