Hutchison Selects Alcatel IP Service Router

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC) has selected the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR) and Alcatel 5620 network management portfolio to deliver advanced IP services, such as Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) and Virtual Leased Line (VLL). Financial terms were not disclosed.

Verizon Wireless Awards $5 Billion Contract to Lucent

Verizon Wireless awarded a contract valued at least $5 billion to Lucent Technologies for supplying a wide variety of network equipment, software and services for Verizon Wireless' national next-generation voice and data network based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology. With this agreement Lucent will continue as Verizon Wireless' primary next-generation network infrastructure supplier.



Under the agreement, Lucent will provide infrastructure and technology spanning its entire portfolio, including its Flexent Modular Cell 4.0 base stations. Lucent Worldwide Services will perform network optimization, integration, planning and design and deployment services.   • Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess, which will be launched in many major U.S. cities later this year, is powered by a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) 3G technology. The network offers average user speeds of 300-500 kbps.


  • In March 2004, Verizon Wireless announced equipment contracts with Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies for the expansion of its BroadbandAccess 3G service across the U.S. The company also announced agreements with SK Telecom, Citrix and Zumasys. Specifically, Verizon Wireless signed a two-year agreement with Nortel Networks under which it was expected to spend US$167 million on Nortel's wireless infrastructure technology. Nortel Networks was a primary supplier in San Diego for Verizon Wireless' initial commercial deployment of BroadbandAccess in October 2003. At the same time, Verizon Wireless announced a two year agreement with Lucent Technologies under which it expects to invest more than $525 million in Lucent's wireless infrastructure.

NTT DoCoMo and TI Team on 3G Handsets

Texas Instruments and NTT DoCoMo announced a joint agreement to develop a cost-competitive, multi-mode UMTS (W-CDMA/ GSM/GPRS) chipset to serve the Japanese, U.S. and worldwide 3G handset market. An integrated UMTS digital baseband and applications processor will be developed based on TI's OMAP 2 architecture and NTT DoCoMo's W-CDMA technology for NTT DoCoMo handsets and other 3G handsets worldwide. Additionally, the agreement will include development and testing of power management, RF and protocol software that will be made available as system solutions to TI's worldwide customer base. http://www.ti.com/

QUALCOMM Announces a Two-for-One Stock Split and Dividend Increase

QUALCOMM declared a two-for-one stock split and approved a 40% increase in its quarterly cash dividend. The company credited the growth and worldwide adoption of CDMA technology for its increased cash flow. http://www.qualcomm.com

Cox Deploys SupportSoft's New VoiceAssist Software

Cox Communications is deploying SupportSoft's VoiceAssist software to help better resolve their broadband subscribers' technical issues over the phone through automated collection and coding of information about a subscriber's PC system and their specific issue, even when the subscriber is disconnected from the Internet. SupportSoft VoiceAssist automatically delivers to the call center a 16-digit code that encapsulates detailed, pertinent information about the caller's computing environment and technical issue, thus shortening the sometimes lengthy question and answer period that happens at the beginning of customer service calls. IceFyre Raises $10 Million for WLAN Chips

IceFyre Semiconductor, a start-up based in Ottawa, Canada, closed a US$10 million funding round for its dual-band and MIMO solutions for WLAN-enabled consumer electronics. The company offers small, low-power, high-performance chipsets aimed at consumer devices, such as cell phones, home entertainment components, and even toys and games, that will require Wi-Fi connectivity. This latest round included participation by existing investors: Kodiak Venture Partners of Waltham, Massachusetts; Prism Venture Partners of Westwood, Massachusetts; Freescale Semiconductor of Austin, Texas, a subsidiary of Motorola Inc.; Covington Capital of Toronto, Ontario; TD Capital Technology Ventures of Boston, Massachusetts; and VenGrowth Capital of Toronto, Ontario. Spirent Names Former Tellabs Exec as CEO

Cisco Names Giancarlo as CTO, Announces Mgt. Changes





Cisco
Systems appointed Charles H. Giancarlo to the position of Chief
Technology Officer (CTO). In addition, Giancarlo will assume
responsibility for the Global Government Solutions Group, while
continuing to lead Cisco's voice and home networking businesses and
serving as President of Cisco-Linksys. Giancarlo joined Cisco in
December 1994 through the acquisition of Kalpana. Most recently
Giancarlo served as the co-leader of network switching, one of Cisco's
core technologies, and as the co-leader of several advanced
technologies, including voice, storage networking and network security.



Cisco Systems announced several other changes to the technology
organization under Mario Mazzola, Senior Vice President and Chief
Development Officer. The appointments include:



Jayshree Ullal,
senior vice president, will lead the newly-formed Security Technology
Group, reporting to Mazzola.


Luca Cafiero,
senior vice president, will lead the newly-formed Data Center,
Storage, Switching, and Wireless Technology Group, reporting to
Mazzola.


Tony Bates, vice
president and general manager, will now have sole responsibility for
the Carrier Core Multiservice Business Unit, reporting to Prem Jain
and Mike Volpi, both senior vice presidents of the Routing Technology
Group.


Kathy Hill, vice
president and general manager, will now report to Mazzola, overseeing
the newly-formed Mid-range and Stackable Switching Technology Group.


Kambiz Hooshmand,
vice president and general manager, will now report to Mazzola,
assuming new responsibilities leading the Optical and Broadband

Boeing Selects Cisco for Global IP Telephony Rollout

The Boeing Company has selected Cisco Systems' IP telephony for rollout across its global enterprise, which includes more than 150,000 employees in 48 states and 70 countries. An IP telephony pilot program has been in place since July 2001 and has grown to approximately 4,500 Cisco IP phones installed at Boeing facilities in Missouri, Texas, Utah, and Washington. NexTone Raises $10 Million for its Session Controllers

NexTone Communications, a start-up based in Germantown, Maryland, closed $10 million in Series C funding for its end-to-end session management products. NexTone's session controllers allow carriers to route, manage, and control real-time IP traffic. Since going live with its first customer twenty-four months ago, NexTone session management products have been deployed in more than 140 carrier networks worldwide and currently manage a capacity of more than 3 billion minutes of VoIP traffic per month.



The up round was led by BCE Capital, the venture arm of Bell Canada Enterprises, and included participation from all existing investors: Core Capital, Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds, Safeguard Scientifics, Delmag Ventures, and Blue Rock Capital. Tidal Networks Secures $12 Million for Enterprise Security

Tidal Networks, a start-up based in San Jose, California, raised $12 million in Series B funding for enterprise networking security. The company is developing a new processing architecture designed specifically for complex networking applications requiring high processing and memory-bandwidth requirements. Tidal Networks said it would leverage a multi-threaded processor technology to deliver significant performance comparable to hard-wired ASICs with the flexibility of a CPU. Product plans have not yet been announced.



Accel Partners and Sequoia Capital joined forces in providing the up-round of financing.



Tidal Networks' executive team includes:

  • Jeff Prince, executive chairman and vice president of engineering. Previously, Prince was a co-founder of Foundry (FDRY) and Centillion (acquired by Bay). Prince holds eight patents related to networking technologies.


  • Tom Barsi, president and CEO. Previously, Barsi was a co-founder and vice president of marketing and business development at VINA.


  • Mario Nemirovsky, CTO. Nemirovsky, holds 23 patents in the area of multi-threading processors. He was previously a chief architect at National Semiconductor.


  • Faizel Lakhani, vice president of marketing. Previously, Lakhani was with Caspian and Nortel.

Westell's VersaLink Gateway Supports DSL Forum TR-069

Westell Technologies announced that its VersaLink Wireless Gateway now supports the DSL Forum's new protocol TR-069 for customer premises equipment (CPE) WAN management. TR-069 establishes rules for how a CPE device communicates and is managed by a remote management system. The VersaLink Wireless Gateway offers service providers the ability to now remotely manage the device via a resident TR-069 client. VersaLink offers wired, wireless and alternate WAN, such as fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) access via the VersaPort CPE.



Westell co-authored the TR-069 protocol and co-chairs the DSLHome technical and marketing committees, including the one responsible for the creation of TR-069. http://www.westell.com.

Pannaway Offers 10 Gbps Routing Device for ADSL2+ Networks

Juniper Reports Revenue $306.9 Million, Stock Buyback

Juniper Networks reported Q2 revenue of $306.9 million, compared with $165.1 million for the same period last year, an increase of 86%.

GAAP net loss for the second quarter was $12.6 million or $0.02 per share, compared with a GAAP net income of $13.6 million or $0.03 per share in the second quarter of 2003. Non-GAAP net income was $42.7 million or $0.08 per share, compared with non-GAAP net income of $10.3 million or $0.03 per share in the second quarter of 2003.

"We met our financial objectives, exceeded our goals for integration of the NetScreen acquisition, expanded our partner and channel relationships, all while remaining intensely focused on our customers and their needs for secure high performance network solutions," stated Scott Kriens, chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks.

CableLabs Issues RFP for Multi-Line VoIP CPE

CableLabs issued a request for proposal (RFP) for Multi-Line multimedia terminal adapter (ML-MTA) equipment that could be used by cable operators to offer voice services for small-business and commercial customers. CableLabs is working with its members to collect information from manufacturers regarding ML-MTA that comply with CableLabs' DOCSIS 2.0 and PacketCable 1.0 specifications. Polycom Delivers 'Surround' Stereo, Conference Phone/Video Integration & SIP Video

Polycom released new software for its VSX video conferencing products featuring new "surround" stereo audio capabilities and support for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The upgraded software enables meetings with up to 20 locations, without the need for scheduling the meeting or additional network hardware. The Polycom VSX systems currently interoperate with SIP implementations from Microsoft Live Communication Server and Nortel Networks Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 and 5200 products. Zhejiang Telecom Chooses Juniper Networks

Zhejiang Telecom, a provincial subsidiary of China Telecom, has deployed the Juniper Networks T-series platform in its metro core IP network. The project, Juniper Networks' first T-series deployment in Zhejiang Province, required T320 routing platforms in each of Zhejiang's ten cities, including Ningbo, Hangzhou and Wenzhou. Following an earlier deployment of Juniper Networks M-series, which facilitated the launching of the carrier's L2 and L3 MPLS VPN service, the T-series deployment will enable interconnection between autonomous VPN routes within Zhejiang Telecom's network for more efficient VPN traffic routing. Norwegian ISP Deploys Juniper's M-series for VPLS

CATCH, a Norwegian ISP, deployed Juniper Networks M-series multiservice edge platforms for use in a nationwide Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) over an IP/MPLS network. Customers can be located in different metropolitan areas and receive multipoint-to-multipoint Ethernet WAN connectivity between all sites. Juniper Networks said that by deploying standards-based VPLS that use BGP for signaling and control, CATCH would realize significant operational savings due to autodiscovery and inter-AS capabilities uniquely available with the IETF draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-bgp-01.txt standard.
