T-Com Expands Deployment of Cisco's IP/MPLS

Cisco Systems announced that T-Com, the fixed-network unit of Deutsche Telekom, is upgrading of its existing Cisco 12000 Series routers to provide customers with access to new carrier services based on IP / MPLS. Specifically, T-Com is working with Cisco to help deliver a significant deployment of the latest generation Cisco IP Service Engines (ISE) interface cards to Cisco 12000 Series routers across its edge layer. This will help enable T Com to reduce its operational expenditure through simplification of its network architecture, and provide a platform for the deployment of Cisco IOS XR.


The network upgrade provides T-Com with the capability to activate authentication and accounting services for large numbers of customers.   • In April 2005, Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) announced a two-year contract, to provide a complete range of maintenance and technical support for Juniper Networks E-, M- and T-series routing platforms in T-Com's network. LWS will provide maintenance and second and third level support for the Juniper equipment in T-Com's IP network.


  • In January 2005, T-Com awarded a three-year contract to Marconi to build Europe's first 40 Gbps optical network. Marconi will supply T-Com with its Multihaul 3000 DWDM transmission platform and its ServiceOn Optical network management system. The Multihaul 3000 will act as an expressway carrying high-bandwidth traffic between switching nodes in the network, with a capacity of 3.2 Tbps (terabits per second) on each optical fiber pair. This will give T-Com an unrivalled capacity in its core network.

ConSentry Raises $17 Million for Pervasive LAN Security

ConSentry Networks (formerly Tidal Networks), a start-up based in Milpitas, California, raised an additional $17 million in an oversubscribed Series C funding round for its technology aimed at providing pervasive LAN security.


ConSentry plans to offer a purpose-built system that leverages its own, high-performance silicon to continuously identify all LAN traffic and enforce user access to authorized resources and applications at wire-speed, in real-time. The company said existing network firewalls apply security at a single ingress/egress point, but that the security threat has spread to points throughout a network. Products plans have not yet been announced.


The new funding round includes previous investors Accel Partners and Sequoia Capital, as well as a new investment from INVESCO Private Capital, bringing ConSentry's total funding to $31 million.


ConSentry's technical team is headed by Jeff Prince, previously co-founder of Foundry Networks and Centillion Networks. Tom Barsi, previously co-founder and vice president of marketing & business development at VINA Technologies, serves as ConSentry's President and CEO. The company also announced the following executive appointments:

  • Dean Hickman-Smith as vice president, worldwide sales. Previously, he was vice president of emerging technologies at Juniper Networks responsible for driving global sales for the security technology acquisitions and product offerings.


  • Franklin Grosvenor as vice president of operations. Previously, he was senior director of manufacturing for the Wireless Networking Business Unit and Mobile Wireless Group with Cisco Systems.


  • Sam Farsad as vice president of engineering. Previously, he was vice president of software engineering with Extreme Networks.

Intrado Selects Sonus for its VoIP E9-1-1

Intrado is using Sonus Networks for its V9-1-1 Mobility Service, a wholesale service that helps VoIP service providers to meet the functional requirements of the recent FCC ruling mandating E9-1-1 capabilities for VoIP. Intrado will use a full suite of Sonus products to manage traffic between VoIP networks, offering carriers both the security and point of demarcation functionality critical to delivering emergency services.

  • In May 2005, Intrado announced plans for the deployment of its VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service as a common access point, enabling E9-1-1 Service Providers to deliver VoIP 9-1-1 calls directly into the dedicated 9-1-1 network.

    Intrado said its VoIP Peering Service would overcome the challenge of interconnecting VoIP 9-1-1 calls with the existing 9-1-1 network. Intrado plans to offer a nationwide VoIP 9-1-1 peering network that will address the needs of those within the VoIP 9-1-1 calling path.

    Recently, several major Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) E9-1-1 Service Providers announced plans to allow VoIP Service Providers to connect to the LEC 9-1-1 network to deliver calls to PSAPs.

    When the Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service is deployed by a LEC, VoIP Service Providers operating within that LEC's region will be able to route their VoIP 9-1-1 calls through a single integrated peering point directly into the LEC's 9-1-1 network. VoIP 9-1-1 calls received by the Intrado peering network will then be routed to the correct 9-1-1 selective router and PSAP in accordance with the VoIP Positioning Center's call routing instructions.

Ixia Acquires CMC for 802.11 Test Systems

Ixia has acquired privately-held Communication Machinery Corporation (CMC). a Santa Barbara, California-based developer of 802.11 capacity and performance testing equipment, for an undisclosed sum. Ixia will now offer a new family of 802.11 test tools.


The new IxWLAN offers a set of test solutions that combine CMC's 802.11 station emulation and security expertise with Ixia's traffic generation and functional test applications, such as IxChariot, IxExplorer, IxLoad, IxVoice, and IxVerify. The tools are aimed at WLAN engineering organizations and service deployment teams of Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and Fortune 500 companies.

Nevis Raises $12.5 Million for its LAN Security Systems

Nevis Networks, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, completed a $12.5 million follow-on round of Series B financing for its LAN security systems. The company said network security has traditionally safeguarded the network perimeter from external threats. It believes enterprises must apply that same level of security for users inside the network. Its vision is a "Personal DMZ for Every User on
Every Port." Product plans have not yet been disclosed.


Nevis also named Charles Dauber as its president and CEO, replacing former CEO Suresh Nihilani. Dauber previously held roles of vice president of marketing, vice president of security products and vice president of corporate development at Blue Coat Systems (formerly CacheFlow). Prior to Blue Coat, Dauber was CEO of a broadband services provider, and held marketing and sales positions at Copper Mountain Networks and Teradyne, Inc.


New investor New Enterprise Associates (NEA) joined existing investors BlueRun Ventures and New Path Ventures in the funding round, which raised the total investment in Nevis to $32.5 million. Nevis will use these funds to bring its products to market and expand its sales and marketing workforce.

Korea's Hostech Deploys Force10 in Hosting Center

Hostech Global, Korea's largest server hosting provider, has deployed Force10 Networks' TeraScale E-Series switches to connect 10,000 servers and deliver services to more than 2,500 customers in its hosting center. In addition to higher capacity and increased density, the combination Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality in the Force10 TeraScale E300 enabled Hostech to collapse its distribution and aggregation layers into a single layer, simplifying the network architecture and management. http://www.force10networks.com

Intel's Itanium2 Processors Get 667 MHz Bus Architecture

Intel introduced two Itanium 2 processors with a 667 megahertz (MHz) front side bus (FSB), which connects and transfers data between the microprocessor, chipset and system's main memory. Servers designed to utilize the new bus are expected to deliver more than 65% greater system bandwidth over servers designed with current Itanium 2 processors with a 400 MHz FSB. The improved front side bus bandwidth allows for 10.6 gigabits of data per second to pass from the processor to other system components. In contrast, the current generation 400 MHz FSB transfers 6.4 gigabits of data per second.


Intel said this new capability will help set the stage for the forthcoming dual core Itanium processor, codenamed "Montecito," which will feature the same bus architecture. Platforms using Montecito are expected to deliver up to twice the performance, up to three times the system bandwidth, and more than 2 1/2 times as much on-die cache as the current generation of Itanium processors. While boosting performance, Montecito is expected to also deliver more than 20% lower power than previous generations of Itanium processors due to new technologies for power management. Montecito will also have Intel Hyper-Threading technology, enabling four times the threads as the current generation.

QUALCOMM Integrates GPS Navigation into its 3G modems

QUALCOMM announced an enhanced GPS navigation solution integrated in its wireless 3G modems, enabling higher accuracy, turn by turn map positioning for automotive and personal navigation applications in wireless handsets. The software will be available on QUALCOMM's gpsOne solution for use with select Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets for both CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) networks.


QUALCOMM said the integration would significantly lower the cost of automotive and personal navigation on wireless handsets by eliminating the need for costly discrete GPS chipsets.


QUALCOMM noted that more than 100 million gpsOne-enabled handsets at over 40 operators globally have shipped to date.

Apple's iTunes Tops Half-a-Billion Downloads, Eyes Music Videos

Users have purchased and downloaded more than half a billion songs from Apple's iTunes Music Store since its launch two years ago.


According to various media sources, Apple is talking to major studies about licensing music videos -- a move that could for portend video-enabled iPods. The company did not comments on these reports.

Sprint Offers CDMA Back-up for Wirelines Access

Sprint will begin offering a means to use its CDMA network as a back-up for existing wireline data access services at business locations. Companies could also use the Sprint-certified CDMA modem and Sprint PCS Data Link service for remote-access features for their mobile workforce. Sprint expects to make these capabilities available to business customers next month.


Sprint Nationwide PCS Network currently supports average data speeds of 50 to 70 kbps. The company's ongoing EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) rollout will boost download speeds up to 10 times. http://www.sprint.com

Cox Approves ARRIS CMTS

Cox Business Services has approved the ARRIS Cadant C3 Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) for use in its network. Cox will use the platform to deliver high-speed data and voice services to its business customers.


ARRIS said key features of the C3 include: a small footprint; DOCSIS 2.0 capabilities allowing the use of 16QAM, 64QAM, ATDMA and SCDMA in difficult areas of the return spectrum; stability and near error-free performance for commercial services applications such as TDM over IP; and 802.1Q VLAN tagging feature -- each C3 is capable of providing up to 64 VLANs.

Japan's KDDI to Deploy Motorola CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch

KDDI plans to deploy Motorola's CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch as the core switch in its CDMA2000 1X network.


In April 2002, KDDI began its nationwide deployment of CDMA2000 1X using Motorola equipment. Since then, Motorola has continued to serve as the carrier's the sole vendor of CDMA2000 1X RAN systems.

UTStarcom Selected for 500,000 More IP DSLAM Lines in China

UTStarcom announced that it recently signed contracts with China Telecom and China Netcom to deploy approximately 500,000 lines of its AN-2000 IP DSLAM in 18 provinces throughout China. UTStarcom also said it is collaborating closely with both China Telecom and China Netcom on IPTV in field trials at over 40 sites throughout China.


UTStarcom has deployed more than seven million lines of its AN-2000 IP DSLAM to date with customers in Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Nokia's IMS Used for Video Sharing in Portugal

TMN, a Portuguese mobile operator, is using the Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for a new commercial video sharing service that uses the Nokia 6680 3G imaging smartphone. Video sharing is a multimedia service that allows 3G mobile terminal users to share a live camera view while speaking on the mobile.


"This is an important milestone and we are very pleased to be providing TMN the means to offer their customers this innovative service that will enrich their everyday communication," said Markku Verkama, General Manager, Networks, Nokia. "IP multimedia is becoming mainstream and Nokia is strongly driving the openness of IP-based concepts such as video sharing with the target to enable operators to offer a diversity of services independent of the network or handset."


Nokia noted that it now has 26 IMS projects ongoing with mobile and fixed operators globally.

Adelphia Selects BigBand in Los Angeles

Adelphia Communications has selected BigBand Digital Simulcast for its Los Angeles system. This solution utilizes BigBand platforms to convert all programming to digital formats at sourcing; leverage the advantages of digital ad insertion and Gigabit Ethernet transport; and assure service to all subscribers by providing a completely digital line-up from the network edge, while also maintaining existing analog video offerings. Adelphia is practicing digital simulcasting for a manageable and economical migration towards all-digital cable services, further augmenting the Los Angeles site, which utilizes BigBand Networks solutions for high-speed data, digital television, HDTV and VOD. Financial terms were not disclosed.


BigBand noted that digital video achieves better than 10x bandwidth efficiency versus analog, freeing capacity for more broadcast programming, HDTV, VOD, VoIP and other emerging services. Cable operators are using digital simulcasting to gradually phase out analog services and subscriber devices by offering all programming digitally.


In digital simulcasting, analog source programming is converted to digital by real-time encoding at cable headends, which can be performed by the BigBand BRE (Broadband Real-Time Encoder). This content, combined with programming from digital sources, is groomed into operator-defined channel lineups which can be performed by the BigBand BMR(Broadband Multimedia-Service Router). Gigabit Ethernet transport then delivers to edge locations, with service-level redundancy available for reliability. At hub or headend locations, advertisements can be digitally spliced into the various video programs, including directed delivery towards specific ad zones. At hub locations, basic and enhanced basic programming is decoded for the analog tier, and simultaneously QAM modulated for the digital subscriber base. BigBand Networks also provides platforms for the edge processing in digital simulcasting.


In addition, Adelphia is testing BigBand's hardware and software infrastructure for its VoIP service launch. Adelphia is using the BigBand Cuda CMTS to route and process signals, and BigBand FastFlow broadband provisioning manager to establish and manage subscriber voice accounts.

Ellacoya Raises $13.5 Million, Bell Canada Joins Investors

Ellacoya Networks, a start-up based in Merrimack, New Hampshire, raised an additional $13.5 million in venture funding for its broadband bandwidth management platform. The Ellacoya IP Service Control System enables application traffic that has specific bandwidth and latency requirements to be prioritized on a per-subscriber basis, ensuring the application's proper performance regardless of the overall traffic load on the network. It allows the broadband service provider to first understand which applications are being consumed by what percentage of subscribers and then to control traffic based on that data in a dynamic and automated way. Ellacoya's platform is deployed worldwide in over 75 service provider networks, managing millions of subscribers. The company said it has system-wide deployments at Tier 1 broadband providers in each global region, including announced deployments at Shaw Communications in Canada and @NetHome in Japan.


The financing was led by new investor BCE Capital, the venture arm of Bell Canada Enterprises, and also included Canaan Partners as a new investor. Existing investors Atlas Venture, Flagship Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, also invested in the round.

Citynet Deploys Infinera DTNs

Citynet, a facilities-based network services provider serving 17 states and Washington, D.C., has deployed Infinera's DTN platform on a significant portion of its network. Citynet is a wholesale IXC carrier with an 8,000 route mile network footprint.


Infinera's "Digital Optical Networking" technology provides the advanced DWDM and digital bandwidth management capabilities and will support the increased demand Citynet is seeing for optical wavelength (2.5 -- 10 Gbps), private line (DS3 -- OC192 and Ethernet), and IP-based service offerings. The DTN supports 800 Gbps of DWDM capacity and delivers a variety of manageable and protectable SONET/SDH and Ethernet-based services, including 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY.


The announcement represents the third customer in as many months.

  • Infinera is offering an optical transport platform based on its Photonic Integrated Circuits. The Infinera DTN supports 400 Gbps, i.e., forty 10 Gbps channels in a half rack, and 800Gbps (eighty 10 Gbps channels) in a full rack.. 100 Gbps line cards support a variety of hot-swappable client interfaces including OC-192/STM-64, OC-48/STM-16, 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY and WAN PHY, and Gigabit Ethernet. The platform runs Infinera's IQ Network Operating System to automate network discovery, configuration, and provisioning via GMPLS.


  • Unlike conventional optical systems, which use analog optical devices for key networking functions, the Infinera DTN uses digital technology. Its photonic integrated circuits convert all traffic from optical to electronic signals, allowing the DTN to add and drop, multiplex, groom, and protect circuits digitally rather than optically. Infinera's Photonic Integrated Circuits include a 100 Gbps transmitter, which integrates ten lasers, ten 10 Gbps modulators, and an optical multiplexer; as well as a 100 Gbps receiver, which integrates an optical demultiplexer and ten photodiodes. Each enables low-cost optical-electrical conversion on a semiconductor chip.

Nortel to Supply CDMA2000 1X network in Vietnam

Nortel was selected to build a nationwide CDMA2000 1X network in Vietnam on behalf of Hutchison Telecommunications (Vietnam) S.A R.L. (Hutchison Telecom Vietnam), in cooperation with Hanoi Telecommunications Joint Stock Company (Hanoi Telecom). Nortel will be the infrastructure supplier for what is expected to be Vietnam's first nationwide wireless broadband network. This network will use CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized). As part of the agreement, Nortel will provide CDMA2000 1X radio base stations, base station controllers, switching platforms and other related equipment. Nortel will also supply CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment and additional services. Financial terms were not disclosed.
