Narus Provides VoIP Traffic Assessment Tool

Narus introduced a VoIP traffic assessment tool based on its unified IP Management and Security platform to help global carriers understand and address the impact of VoIP traffic on their business.

The Narus IP Platform provides a total network view of all IP data in a carrier's network, including VoIP traffic. The system offers extensible capabilities to secure, analyze, monitor and mediate any traffic in an IP network, including H.323, SIP, and proprietary VoIP protocols including Skype.

Narus said it has deployed VoIP detection at several carriers already, producing startling results. One carrier determined that 15% of calls a day bypassed their traditional network causing a significant impact on revenue. Using Narus, this carrier recovered its losses by mitigating the traffic and passing information to the billing system to bill subscribers for the network usage.

As a result of several successful pilot implementations, Narus is initiating a VoIP business analysis program. The program will provide carriers with the information to determine the financial impact VoIP traffic has on the network. In addition, system integrator partners will offer a mediation implementation service, enabling carriers to realize revenue from all IP traffic.

Blended annual churn was stable compared to that at March, with a small improvement in contract offset by a slight increase in prepaid. Proportionate net customer additions were 204,000 in the quarter. The total proportionate customer base was 17.5 million at the end of June, 6.4% higher year on year on an organic basis. Blended annual ARPU increased to EUR 360 for the year to June compared to EUR 359 for the year to March. Annual churn increased slightly when compared to March.

  • In Italy, proportionate net customer additions were 204,000 in the quarter. The total proportionate customer base was 17.5 million at the end of June, 6.4% higher year on year on an organic basis. Blended annual ARPU increased to EUR 360 for the year to June compared to EUR 359 for the year to March. Annual churn increased slightly when compared to March.

  • Vodafone UK regained momentum in the quarter with 165,000 net customers added, taking the total base to 15.5 million customers, an increase of 8.9% year on year. Annual churn increased slightly compared to March, driven in large part by an increase in prepaid churn. Blended annual ARPU reduced to 300 pounds from 306 pounds for the year to June compared to the year to March, principally due to the impact of the reduction in incoming call termination rates. The growth in average customers was substantially offset by the fall in ARPU resulting in service revenue growth of 0.6% for the quarter when compared to the same quarter last year.

  • In Japan, the closing proportionate customer base in Japan was 14.6 million. Vodafone Japan recorded positive net additions of 5,000 in June, but a net reduction of 72,000 for the quarter. Annual churn levels fell slightly compared to March, benefiting from the continued investment in customer retention activities and the introduction of new price plans and promotions.

  • Vodafone Spain continued to perform very strongly, adding a further 368,000 net customers in the quarter to June. At the end of June, the total customer base stood at 11.8 million customers, an increase of 18.9% year on year. BellSouth Sees Slower DSL Growth and Continued Decline in Wireline Access

BellSouth reported Q2 revenue of $8.52 billion, up 2.6% compared to Q1 2005. Q2 earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations were 43 cents compared to 37 cents in the first quarter of 2005 and 51 cents in the second quarter of 2004. Some highlights of the report:

  • BellSouth's Communications Group revenue in Q2 remained stable at $4.62 billion, a slight increase compared to the same quarter of 2004. Revenue growth from long distance, DSL and small business access line gains effectively offset revenue declines from residential access line loss and large business services.

  • During Q2, BellSouth added 124,000 net DSL customers, down from 253,000 DSL net customer additions in Q1. BellSouth attributed the slower growth to changes in promotional activity during the first quarter and traditional slowing in Q2. BellSouth now has a total of 2.4 million DSL subscribers.

  • Driven by DSL, network data revenue for the second quarter was $1.17 billion, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the same quarter of 2004.

  • As of June 30, 2005, total access lines were 20.8 million, down 419,000 compared to Q1 2005. The company said the access line loss was driven by wireless substitution, competition and seasonal household moves that traditionally affect Q2.

  • UNE-P access lines resold by BellSouth competitors were down 235,000 compared to the first quarter of 2005. Residential retail access lines were down 204,000. In contrast, business retail access lines held steady, boosted by 33,000 net new access lines in the small business segment.

  • BellSouth long distance customers reached 53 percent penetration of its mass-market customer base. With many residential and small business customers choosing unlimited long distance and international calling plans, ARPU is about $17 per month.

  • An additional 80,000 customers added DIRECTV service to their communications packages during the second quarter, bringing the total number of customers with this package to 394,000.

  • Operating margin was 19.2 percent, a 190 basis point improvement compared to Q12005.

  • Operating free cash flow (defined as net cash provided by operating activities less capital expenditures) was $1.3 billion for the second quarter of 2005.

"The realignment of our assets toward wireless and broadband services is starting to pay off," said Duane Ackerman, BellSouth's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Tata's VSNL to Acquire Teleglobe for $239 Million

India's Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) agreed to acquire Teleglobe International in a deal valued at $239 million. The acquisition would significantly expand VSNL's ownership interests in undersea cable networks and provide it with more than 200 direct and bilateral agreements with leading voice carriers, many of which are the incumbent carriers within their countries or large international wireless service providers.

Telegloge, which was once the international carrier for Bell Canada, currently has ownership in 100 worldwide cable and satellite networks. Following a split from Bell Canada Enterprises in 2002 and a subsequent bankruptcy, Teleglobe was relaunched in June 2003 as a provider of international voice, wireless roaming, data and Internet services. Teleglobe later acquired ITXC, one of the largest providers of international VoIP wholesale services with direct relationships with carriers in more than 175 countries. Teleglobe is currently headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda with a large operating center in Montreal. The company claims more than 1,400 wholesale customers and expects to carry over 13 billion minutes of voice traffic globally this year.

VSNL, which is part of India's $17 billion Tata Group, has a strong pan-India domestic Long Distance network. It is also a leading player in the Corporate Data Market in India, offering Frame relay, ATM and MPLS based IP-VPN services. VSNL also has a rapidly growing retail presence under the Tata Indicom brand through its products like high speed broadband, dial-up Internet, net telephony and calling cards.

Earlier this month, VSNL completed its acquisition of the Tyco Global Network (TGN), a state-of-the-art undersea cable network that spans 60,000 km (37,280 miles) and the continents of North America, Europe and Asia. With the acquisition of TGN, VSNL is now one of the world's largest providers of submarine cable bandwidth. VSNL acquired the network for $130 million (not including the assumption of certain liabilities). In addition to the submarine cables, the Tyco acquisition gave VSNL 30 Points of Presence in 12 countries in North America, Europe and Asia. VSNL also has business operations in Sri Lanka and Nepal and is soon entering South Africa.

"VSNL's vision is to become a leading global player in wholesale voice and bandwidth and enterprise data services," said Mr. N Srinath, Director on the Board of VSNL. "This agreement, coupled with the TGN acquisition and recently announced plans to expand into new markets, will move us closer to the size and network breadth needed to achieve this goal."http://www.vsnl.inhttp://www.teleglobe.com
