NSN Boosts Liquid Radio WCDMA Software

Nokia Siemens Networks announced several enhancements for its Liquid Radio WCDMA Software Suite to help mobile broadband manage the smartphone boom and substantially reduce the network signaling overload.

Fast Dormancy Profiling  -- a new Nokia Siemens Networks technology that identifies the legacy smartphones connecting to the network and eliminates the unnecessary signaling they often create. This application significantly reduces the air interface load on the Radio Network Controller (RNC).

Fast Cell PCH Switching --  also a Nokia Siemens Networks technology, the network learns how specific smartphones are using the network services and shortcuts the signaling process for rapid call set-up, faster response from mobile broadband services and reduced signaling.

High Speed Cell FACH  -- enables networks to support more smartphones and provide faster services for subscribers using lower data volumes. It also significantly decreases signaling load between the RNC, base station and smartphone.

“When people use smartphones, they stay connected to mobile broadband networks for longer periods of time and use a wider variety of services,” said Thorsten Robrecht, VP portfolio management at Nokia Siemens Networks. “As data traffic grows, there is a huge rise in signaling between smartphones and core networks to keep services active. Coping with this signaling is critical to maintain network services and deliver an outstanding smartphone experience for mobile broadband customers.

Vitesse Integrates MACSec into GE & 10GE PHYs for End-End Layer 2 Encryption

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced the first PHY transceivers to integrate MACSec technology for end-to-end, Layer 2 network security.

The new Vitesse SynchroPHY Gigabit Ethernet (GE) and 10GE devices enable network-wide Layer 2 MACsec encryption and preserve nanosecond-level IEEE 1588v2 accuracy.

Vitesse said this new paradigm of establishing Layer 2 encryption end-to-end, rather than link-by-link as is now the case, will prove to be especially useful for cloud services, mobile backhaul and other high-value communications. Until now, MACsec PHYs have traditionally been limited to link-based box-to-box applications primarily within cloud service data centers

Key elements of the Vitesse solution include:

VeriTime: the industry’s highest accuracy IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol

Intellisec: the industry’s first PHY technology to enable IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption.  Intellisec offers 256-bit encryption support, versus the 128-bit encryption typically today.

“Vitesse’s approach enables a paradigm shift in mobile, cloud, and other critical infrastructure networks,” said Richard Interrante, product marketing director at Vitesse. “VeriTime delivers the industry’s de facto highest accuracy IEEE 1588v2 network timing and now we’ve again moved beyond our competitors with this latest generation incorporating Intellisec. Delivering low latency security while preserving network synchronization simply isn’t possible with traditional link-based MACsec technology. Vitesse is first to do this, making network-wide Layer 2 security a realistic and affordable option for carriers and other cloud providers.”

Sampling is underway.

Infonetics: Optical WDM Market Continues Recovery

The overall optical network hardware market worldwide, including SONET/SDH and WDM equipment, totaled $2.6 billion in 1Q13, according to a new report from Infonetics.

Some highlights:

  • North America was the only region to post growth in overall optical hardware revenue on a quarterly basis in 1Q13, up 7.5% from 4Q12
  • Topping the optical market share leaderboard in 1Q13 are, in alphabetical order, Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Fujitsu, Huawei and ZTE
  • Ciena is now a larger supplier of WDM gear than Alcatel-Lucent and is 2nd only to Huawei
  • Cyan, now publicly traded, grew revenue 86% year-over-year (and is now tracked in Infonetics’ Optical Network Hardware report)
  • Nokia-Siemens completed its divestiture of its optical division, now called Coriant (also tracked in Infonetics’ optical report)

“The 4-quarter rolling average for global optical WDM equipment revenue notched a third consecutive quarter of growth in 1Q13, and we believe the market will continue trending in a positive direction this year.   On a year-over-year basis (1Q12 vs. 1Q13), total optical spending is down 5%, but this is only a result of massive cuts in legacy (SONET/SDH) spending over the past 12 months (down 30%). The WDM segment is up 10% year-over year, a welcome sign that spending in this more relevant segment is returning to long-term trend levels. I won’t call it a recovery until WDM revenue is up by double-digit percents for several quarters on a year-over-year basis, but 2013 is looking good, especially in North America and China, where 100G rollouts are picking up speed,"  stated Andrew Schmitt, principal analyst for optical at Infonetics Research.

Juniper Introduces Big Data Analytics for SPs Based on Guavus

Juniper Networks introduced its Junos Network Analytics suite, a set of big data analytics and network intelligence tools developed with Guavus, a start-up specializing in big data analytics solutions.

The goal is to deliver valuable insights from IP and MPLS network traffic patterns to better understand network behavior in order to optimize routing network assets, increase revenue opportunities and attract and retain customers.  The solution extracts network flow data and routing tables from Juniper Networks routing platforms or other third-party vendor routing platforms.

The Junos Network Analytics suite includes the following:

  • BizReflex: A network analytics engine and dashboard that extracts and analyzes information from edge and core routers to allow operators to segment enterprise customers according to their respective value and price services accordingly, improving margins and customer retention. It also allows service providers to identify high-value prospects and acquire new customers more efficiently. These valuable insights can increase revenue opportunities and enhance service differentiation.
  • NetReflex: Provides network architects and operations personnel with detailed traffic trends and analysis for IP and MPLS networks. This solution gives operators more insight than previously possible into traffic patterns on the network, allowing network service providers to reduce costs with informed decision capabilities and improve the efficiency of their network.

Junos Network Analytics SKUs are available now and subscription-based pricing will be on Juniper's price list in June 2013.
