Optimum Lightpath Offers Broadcast Video Transport over Metro Ethernet

Cablevision Systems' Optimum Lightpath division has launched a Broadcast Video Transport (BVT) service as part of its Metro Ethernet Intelligent Transport Services portfolio. The service, which is aimed at media companies, supports compressed, uncompressed, analog, digital, and high-definition video applications that require "Broadcast Quality" transportgiven its sensitivity to packet loss, transit delay and jitter.



Optimum Lightpath's BVT is a MEF 9 and 14 certified service with standard attributes that include Dedicated Access Termination; Guaranteed Bandwidth [CIR]; Quality of Service; and Network Path Protection with <50ms Resiliency.



The service runs over Optimum Lightpath's intelligent, carrier-class Metro Ethernet network, which spans more than 2,700 route miles throughout northern New Jersey, Connecticut and the New York metropolitan area.



The company said its BVT over Metro Ethernet also features the standard attributes of Metro Ethernet, including point to point connection provisioning, guaranteed network reliability, dedicated bandwidth, and simplified pricing.

SEC Charges Former General Counsel of KLA-Tencor and Juniper

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed fraud charges against Lisa C. Berry, who is accused of routinely backdating option grants from 1997 to 2003, first as General Counsel of KLA-Tencor Corporation and then as General Counsel of Juniper Networks. The Commission alleges that Berry's misconduct caused the two companies to conceal hundreds of millions of dollars in stock option compensation expenses relating to undisclosed in-the-money options provided to company executives and employees.

Sycamore Enhances Circuit/Packet eXchange (CPX) Module

Sycamore Networks announced enhancements to its Circuit/Packet eXchange (CPX) module set, including a doubling of performance and scalability. The CPX solution is designed for migrating from TDM to IP in transmission networks.



The module is interoperable with Ethernet/PPP-compliant routers and SS7 signaling network elements. It aggregates circuit traffic onto higher-speed uplinks in traditional DCS grooming fashion; it also routes downstream traffic from multiple networks into a statistically multiplexed packet-switched uplink to optimize bandwidth in the packet network.



Sycamore's DNX 11/88 multiservice cross-connect system equipped with a CPX interface now supports up to 1024 DS0s or 32 T1/E1 virtual WAN connections. The new CPX software release also delivers improved link utilization and reporting features that enable network operators to simplify performance management and improve capacity planning. Sycamore said these enhancements provide the tools to more effectively monitor SS7 and IP traffic loads and proactively preempt network congestion and traffic bottlenecks as the network scales.

Juniper Reaches Final Settlement with SEC

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) authorized a final settlement with Juniper Networks regarding the previously-disclosed SEC inquiry into the company's historical stock option granting practices. Without admitting or denying the allegations in the SEC's complaint, Juniper Networks has agreed to settle the charges by consenting to a permanent injunction against any future violations of the antifraud, reporting, books-and-records and internal control provisions of the federal securities laws. No monetary penalties were assessed against the company.

Nsight Telservices Deploys Nortel for IPTV

Nsight Telservices, a midwestern U.S. regional telecommunications provider, has deployed Nortel's end-to-end IPTV solution. The new IPTV service will be available to Nsight Telservices subscribers in Northeast Wisconsin in September.



Nortel's IPTV solution includes Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600, Nortel Application Switch 2424, Nortel VPN Router 600, as well as elements from a best-in-class IPTV ecosystem. The IPTV ecosystem includes Avail Media Connect and Edge platforms for the provision of content, Minerva Networks' iTVManager middleware and Widevine Technologies' content protection.



Nortel will also provide Nsight Telservices with Global Services for IPTV including project management, engineering, integration, installation, technical support and assisted operation.

Philippine Carrier Deploys Ellacoya for Traffic Management

Innove Communications, a leading integrated communications provider in the Philippines, has deployed Ellacoya Networks' broadband service optimization system to gain visibility into the traffic on its network. The platform provides Innove the ability to manage that traffic on a per-subscriber and per-application basis. It will be used to monitor and manage quality on the network as well as to provide the basis for new revenue streams.

The deployment of the Ellacoya solution was carried out by CommVerge Solutions. The companies have entered into a non-exclusive agreement under which CommVerge resells Ellacoya's solutions to broadband providers in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.

Earthlink to Cut 900 Jobs in Restructuring

Citing weakness in its subscription model, Earthlink announced a corporate restructuring that includes the elimination of approximately 900 jobs. The company will close its Orlando, FL; Knoxville, TN; Harrisburg, PA and San Francisco, CA offices and substantially reduce its presence in Pasadena, CA, and Atlanta, GA. EarthLink expects to record facility exit and restructuring costs of $60 - $70 million associated with the plan.



Earthlink said it now expects industry-wide gross subscriber additions to decelerate in 2008, resulting in fewer gross subscriber additions for EarthLink. The company no longer will seek to add "new subscribers that do not yield a positive lifetime value for our shareholders." Additionally, as subscriber growth slows, the company expects to realize fewer migrations from narrowband to broadband.



EarthLink expects that as it reduces its marketing efforts aimed at acquiring new customers who have high early life churn characteristics, its overall churn will come down over time as its longer tenured existing customers become the predominant part of its base.



Additionally, EarthLink is modifying its previously issued revenue, adjusted EBITDA and net loss guidance for the third quarter and full year 2007. For the third quarter of 2007, EarthLink now expects revenue of $290 - $300 million. Excluding the one-time facility exit and restructuring charges, the company now expects adjusted EBITDA (a non-GAAP measure, see definition in "Non-GAAP Measures" below) of $30 - $35 million and a net loss of $(33) - $(43) million. For the full year 2007, Earthlink now expects to end the year with approximately 3.9 million subscribers, with revenue of $1.190 - $1.210 billion. Excluding the one-time facility exit and restructuring charges, the company expects full year 2007 adjusted EBITDA of $135 - $145 million and a net loss of $(79) - $(109) million.

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom to conduct Share Buy-back

Chunghwa Telecom, the incumbent operator in Taiwan, announced a share repurchase or buy-back program. The company expects to repurchase 250 million ordinary shares, representing 2.35% of the company's total outstanding shares. The range of the repurchase price will be from NT$38.36 to NT$85.23 per share. Repurchased shares will be deregistered in the future.



Chunghwa also announced plans to review its real estate holdings, which include approximately 410 hectares across Taiwan. The company will then release unused lands gradually to a new property management subsidiary to develop these assets.

Huawei Builds WiMAX 802.16e Net for Saudi Telecom

Saudi Telecom has selected Huawei Technologies to deploy a WiMAX 802.16e-based network covering major cities including Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Financial terms were not disclosed.



Under the contract, Huawei will design and deploy an end-to end WiMAX 802.16e network including Base Station, Access Service Network Gateway, Network Management System, as well as an Authorization, Authentication and Accounting system.



Huawei's end-to-end WiMAX solution integrates key technologies such as orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), enabling high-quality network coverage and bandwidth capacity.

Quorum Develops TD-SCDMA + GSM/GPRS/EDGE Transceiver Chip

Quorum Systems, a start-up based in San Diego, unveiled an ultra-low-power, multi-band, multi-mode radio frequency (RF) transceiver. The new "Sereno" QS3200 adds TD-SCDMA support to the company's already existing 2G/2.5G/3G RF transceiver family. The chip is built on a single-die and integrates TD-SCDMA + GSM/GPRS/EDGE capabilities.



Quorum's QS3200 simultaneously supports dual-band (1900MHz and 2000MHz) TD- SCDMA/HSPDA Category 10 and Quad-band (USGSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900) GSM/GPRS/EDGE. Compared with solutions in the market today, Quorum said its device removes as many as four chips from the radio bill-of-materials (BOM), without the need for costly modules.



Quorum is currently working with baseband partners and expects platform reference designs utilizing the QS3200 to be available in mid-2008.

Motorola and its subsidiary companies Symbol Technologies and Wireless Valley Communications filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Aruba Networks claiming infringement of patents related to wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies.



Motorola said two of the patents in this lawsuit relate to WLAN switching architecture technology, where both Symbol Technologies and Wireless Valley have been pioneers.
