Dell'Oro: DWDM equipment market to surpass $17B by 2026

Demand for optical transport DWDM equipment is forecast to surpass $17 billion by 2026, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. Over the next five years, it is expected that DWDM long gaul system sales will grow at a faster pace than WDM Metro system sales.

"Although there is a ton of market turbulence, we do not see demand for DWDM equipment letting up," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "In fact, the biggest issue is that demand seems to be growing faster than supply. Hence, even if a mild recession were to occur, we think the worst case scenario is that demand will align with supply sooner."

"Hence, we are projecting continuous growth for DWDM system revenues. The only difference over the next five years, compared to previous years, is that we are expecting more growth from DWDM Long Haul since IPoDWDM should lower the use of WDM Metro systems in data center interconnect," added Yu.

Additional highlights from the Optical Transport 5-Year July 2022 Forecast Report:

  • DWDM Long Haul revenue is forecast to grow at a five-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5 percent.
  • WDM Metro revenue is forecast to grow at a five-year CAGR of 3 percent.
  • Capacity shipments each year are projected to grow at an average annual rate of 30+ percent.
  • Spectral efficiency is expected to improve at an average annual rate of 9 percent.

Dell'Oro: Disaggregated DWDM equipment market up 36% in Q2

Disaggregated DWDM systems revenue outperformed the broader optical transport market in 2Q 2021, growing 36 percent year-over-year while the total WDM market was nearly unchanged from the year-ago quarter, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. As a result of the strong quarter, the forecast for disaggregated DWDM systems was further raised.

"Disaggregated DWDM systems outperformed the broader market, demonstrating the growing adoption of this platform type," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "Really what we see is that this type of platform architecture, where transponder units are independent of the line systems, is being more widely embraced beyond the Internet content providers. Also, it is no longer just for metro applications. Recently, the highest growth rates have been from long-haul applications," added Yu.

Highlights from 2Q 2021 Quarterly Report:

  • The top manufacturers by revenue share for disaggregated transponder units were Ciena, Infinera, and Cisco.
  • The immediate need to migrate to higher speed, better performing transponder technology has been one of the main drivers for using disaggregated transponder units. As a result, 400+ Gbps wavelengths were the fastest-growing line speeds on these systems.
  • The outlook for disaggregated transponder units was raised due to the higher rate of adoption outside of hyperscalers. We now forecast revenue for this equipment type to surpass $2 billion this year.

Cignal AI: North American optical sales rebound in 2019

Sales of optical equipment in North America rose more than 25% for 4Q19 and 10% for all of 2019, according to the most recent Transport Hardware Report from research firm Cignal AI.

The North American packet market for Access and Aggregation routing devices also grew strongly in the fourth quarter as demand for Edge and Core switching and routing dropped off dramatically. 5G and other access rollouts boosted growth in the Access and Aggregation market segment.

“After three years of North American spending declines as operators focused capex on wireless and access, optical hardware sales for the region revived and grew at a healthy pace for 2019, while packet hardware sales remained flat,” said Scott Wilkinson, Lead Analyst at Cignal AI. “Market leaders Ciena, Infinera, and Cisco all achieved optical sales growth of more than 25% in 2019.”

Some highlights:

  • Long haul optical spending reached record levels in 2019. Growth slowed in 4Q19 but the segment finished the year up over 10%.
  • Transport equipment sales in China declined slightly in 4Q19 as packet sales declined and optical sales growth cooled to single digits. When adjusted for the influence of ZTE’s shutdown in 2Q18, optical hardware sales grew less than 10% in 2019.
  • Japan ended an extraordinary year of optical sales growth up 25% in Q4 and almost 40% in 2019.

Fujitsu's TransLambda delivers 3X optical capacity in C-band

Fujitsu Network Communications unveiled TransLambda technology,  an ultra-high capacity, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) multiband transmission system (MTS) that substantially expands the transmission capacity of optical fiber networks without deploying new L- and S- band dedicated transceivers.

Fujitsu's TransLambda packs multiple transmission bands into a single fiber using all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC). TransLambda enables up to three times the capacity for data center interconnect (DCI) and long-haul transport networks. Specifically, TransLambda fiber capacity multiplier technology offers ultra-high capacity — up to 76.8Tb/s of data using 192 channels at 400G speeds per 75GHz channel — in a plug-and-play blade using C-band transponders.

The company said this 3X boost is particularly crucial for those applications where C-band transmission is the only available option for the foreseeable future, such as optical links that use direct-attach or transponder-attach ZR/ZR+ pluggable coherent optics.

The Fujitsu TransLambda Test Kit, which is currently being used in customer lab trials, is offered in a single blade configuration that can be used with any legacy WDM network architecture including multi-vendor systems.

“TransLambda technology is just the latest in a line of innovations from Fujitsu to achieve the highest network speed and capacity as cost-efficiently as possible, helping our customers gain true competitive advantage in today’s demanding marketplace,” said Paul Havala, vice president of global planning at Fujitsu Network Communications. “Our TransLambda fiber multiplier approach is a much more cost-efficient way to achieve significant capacity increases without installing L-band equipment, addressing cost and operational overhead while seamlessly integrating into existing network architecture to fully leverage deployed fiber assets.”

ADVA hits new benchmarks for bandwidth/reach on terrestrial long-haul

ADVA announced new benchmarks for bandwidth and reach on terrestrial long-haul using its FSP 3000 TeraFlex platform.

The new records were achieved in a commercial long-haul terrestrial network originally built for 100Gbit/s services. ADVA’s partners included the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC), EENet of HITSA and Tele2 Estonia.

Using an optical spectrum-as-a-service approach, the terminal achieved 200Gbit/s per wavelength transmission over a distance of 5,738km with 2.5bit/symbol, and 500Gbit/s over 1,016km with 5bit/symbol modulation. Record-breaking results also included 300Gbit/s per wavelength transmission over 3,751km with 3bit/symbol, and 400Gbit/s per wavelength across 1,792km with 4.5bit/symbol modulation. Feasibility of 800Gbit/s transmission over 1,016km in a single 125GHz spectral slice was also demonstrated.

ADVA said one of the keys to achieving this performance is the ability of the FSP 3000 TeraFlex to utilize network telemetry and fractional QAM to maximize reach and capacity through the automated configuration of modulation format and baud rate.

The trial also highlighted how a disaggregated open line system (OLS) approach can enhance network flexibility and leverage the most value from existing optical infrastructure.

“Our terminal technology is now redefining terrestrial long-haul data transport. Just as we proved in trials with DCI and metro networks, the software-defined transmission of our FSP 3000 TeraFlex™ is the ultimate response to soaring bandwidth needs,” said Jörg-Peter Elbers, SVP, advanced technology, ADVA. “With its programmable signal shaping and ultra-flexible modulation capabilities, our unique solution balances distance and capacity for maximum spectrum utilization and optimal performance over any reach. This gives communication service providers the power to massively increase bandwidth without the expense of a major upgrade. This demo also shows how an open coherent optical layer removes all restrictions, even when interconnecting across multiple countries. And, with our FSP 3000 TeraFlex deployed as part of a disaggregated OLS solution, it delivers complete agility for best cost efficiency.”

TIM carries 550G wavelength with Nokia's Photonic Service Engine 3

Nokia, in collaboration with Telecom Italia (TIM), set a new European record for data transmission over a long-distance backbone network -- a wavelength speed of 550 Gbps carried more than 350 km on TIM's operational network between Rome and Florence. In addition, TIM and Nokia carried a 400G wavelength over 900 km between Rome and Milan, and a 300 Gbps wavelength over 1,750 km.

The trial used the new Nokia Photonic Service Engine 3 (Nokia PSE-3). TIM'a DWDM backbone is based on the latest generation of Nokia's 1830 Photonic Service Switch.  The network is fully automated and currently carries optical signals with a capacity of 100 Gb/s over distances of up to 1,800 kilometers, and 200 Gb/s up to 800 kilometers. The backbone, with a coverage of over 16,000 kilometers of fiber, and connecting to 65 national POPs (Point of Presence), has carried over 9,000 petabytes of data traffic in the last year.

Elisabetta Romano, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer at TIM, said: "We are proud of this European record which confirms TIM's technological leadership, the high quality of our network, our commitment to develop innovative solutions in order to guarantee the best experience to our customers. Today's result, which triples transmission speed compared to the current one, confirms that TIM's network is the most advanced infrastructure capable of offering new digital services and platforms, also with a view to developing 5G."

Germany's M-net tests Nokia's probabilistically shaped wavelengths

M-net Telekommunikations GmbH, a German service provider, has conducted the first field trial of probabilistically shaped wavelengths using Nokia Photonic Service Engine 3 (PSE 3) super coherent technology.

Specifically, M-net and Nokia enabled a 500 Gbps, single, probabilistically shaped wavelength over a regional DWDM network spanning the German state of Bavaria.

M-net used probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) to shape the signal from its maximum capacity of 600G to a rate optimized for the specific fiber route used in the test.

Dr. Hermann Rodler, CTO at M-net, said: "This field trial clearly underlines the innovative strength of M-net. We are very proud to collaborate with Nokia to push the technology envelope on our state-of-the-art fiber-optic network, and to be the first carrier to publicly test the PSE-3 and its probabilistic constellation shaping technology."

Sam Bucci, head of optical networking at Nokia, said: "We're excited to partner with M-net on the implementation of its new fiber optic backbone network. The Technical University of Munich played a key role in the development of PCS, and the PSE-3 was largely developed at Nokia's R&D facility in Nuremberg, so it's only appropriate that the first field trial of PSE-3 technology would take place in Bavaria."

Nokia's PSE-3 chipset leverages probabilistic constellation shaping

Nokia unveiled its Photonic Service Engine 3 chipset featuring probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) that pushes fiber-optic performance close to the Shannon limit to fully exploit channel capacity.

PCS is a new modulation technique pioneered by Nokia Bell Labs that the company says enables maximum capacity over any distance and on any fiber - from metro to subsea - increasing capacity up to 65% over currently deployed networks while reducing power by 60%. This includes 200G rates over most terrestrial and subsea links, as 400G over most shorter distances.

The PSE-3 chipset, which is the first coherent digital signal processor to implement PCS, provides finely adjustable wavelength capacity from 100G to 600G with a single, uniform modulation format, baud rate, and channel size. This simplifies network operations and planning.

"This is a breakthrough in how we can maximize the performance of optical networks and, at the same time, vastly simplify operations. The Photonic Service Engine 3 is the culmination of a decade of research and first-hand experience building the largest, highest capacity optical networks in the world. By introducing this extreme and yet remarkably simple programmability, our customers can now maximize the capacity of every link in their network, whether that's 10 km, 10,000 km or beyond. They will be able to keep their costs under control while handling the huge bandwidth demands that video, cloud, and soon 5G will be throwing at them."

Nokia is planning to introduce the PSE-3 chipset across ist packet-optical portfolio, including a new version of the 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect, a compact modular WDM platform for data center interconnect. The 1830 PSI-M will use modular chassis architecture with high-performance modules based pm the PSE-3. Commercial availability is expected in Q3 2018.

  • Optical Transport revenue increased 19 percent year-over-year in 4Q17, driven largely from increased WDM Metro sales. In the quarter, WDM Metro revenue grew 30 percent year-over-year.
  • The majority of WDM Metro revenue growth in 2017 occurred in two regions—Asia Pacific and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa).
  • Three vendors—Cisco, ECI Telecom, and ZTE—each increased their WDM Metro revenue by over 40 percent.
  • Demand for coherent line cards continued to grow at a high rate, and approximately 185 thousand coherent line cards shipped for metro applications in 2017.

“The WDM Metro systems market jumped in 2017,” said Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “We all knew that demand for WDM systems in metro applications would increase, but it was a huge surprise to see an 18 percent revenue increase in 2017,” added Yu.

Ekinops debuts flexible line rate modules

Ekinops based in Lannion, France, a global supplier of next-generation optical networking equipment, introduced two new flexible rate line modules for its optical transport platform in metro, regional or long-haul deployments.

The two new modules – the PM 200FRS02 and PM 200FRS02-SF – employ dual QSFP28 client ports with software-selectable line side modulation that can be provisioned as either DP-QPSK or 16QAM to create 100G or 200G transport links. The new generation modules occupy only one-third the space of previous equipment, occupying only a single slot in an Ekinops 360 chassis, for three times the capacity per shelf. This makes it possible to fit up to 1.2 terabits per second of capacity in only two rack units. In addition, the PM 200FRS02-SF provides single fiber operation, giving service providers the option of cutting fiber costs in half.

Ekinops is also adding to the flexibility of the modules by introducing the PM 100G-AGG companion card for multiplexing up to ten 10G multiprotocol client services into a G.709 standard OTU4 that connects to one client port on the PM 200FRS02 or PM 200FRS02-SF.

Ekinops said its new modules will help service providers to reduce their capital and operational costs, improving the business case for deploying new capacity.

Aire Networks, which is Spain's fourth largest wholesale operator, is now using the Ekinops modules in its 27,000-kilometer fiber network that covers 90 percent of the country. The single fiber capability was key for Aire Networks, which was looking for a solution supporting 200G transmission in single fiber mode.

“We have been able to reduce the form factor in these new modules by a factor of three while reducing power requirements by a factor of two. That delivers an order of magnitude improvement in service density and network cost, key factors for Aire Networks and for other Ekinops customers when it comes to profitability,” said Mark Burton, EMEA Vice President of Sales at Ekinops. “This demonstrates Ekinops’ continued commitment to providing our customers the most efficient and flexible optical transport solutions.”
