AT&T Launches Business Encryption Services

AT&T has enhanced its managed security portfolio with a new encryption service designed to help protect companies from data loss and leakage while also addressing regulatory-compliance concerns, the non-repudiation of data and privacy issues. The new AT&T Encryption Services is focused on the protection of information by providing encryption services and management of digital signatures "in the cloud."

Some of the capabilities of AT&T Encryption Services include e-mail confidentiality to help prevent unauthorized parties from accessing critical messages and attachments, authentication of the e-mail sender, as well as non-repudiation: a validation of the integrity of the e-mail message and its contents that ensures the recipient that the message was not modified.

Key features include:

  • Encrypted Mail: Developed to encrypt e-mail messages and attachments on the personal computer, this offer supports Outlook, Lotus Notes, Outlook Express, BlackBerry and Webmail.

  • Encrypted Mail Gateway: An enterprise policy-management filter transparently determines whether e-mail should be encrypted. It features industry-trusted encryption standards such as PKI, X.509 and S/MIME and includes a message-pickup center for nonsubscribers.

  • Encrypted Mail Exchange: This enables businesses to establish groups within a message-exchange platform, which provides full encryption services for e-mail and e-mail attachments. This is designed for organizations that need to secure messaging for distinct groups within the organization, such as human resources and accounting. It features audit trail reports and compliance with Industry Auditing Rules and Regulations.

  • Encrypted Documents: This feature establishes the secure exchange of sensitive information between an individual and a user group by encrypting folder or network drives and all of the data contained within them. The Encrypted Documents feature reduces internal data leakage and theft of confidential data, as well as provides compliance with industry regulations when handling confidential information.

  • Encrypted Document Delivery: This offer provides the functionality to replace regular postal communications used for statements, invoices and notices with secure, signed and trusted e-mail messages and statement notifications. This is an end-to-end signed and encrypted document-delivery application that allows organizations to reduce operational costs and safeguard their client identities from statement theft and password interception.

BT Launches Wholesale Ethernet Service over 21CN

BT announced the launch of Wholesale Ethernet service over its 21st Century Network (21CN) platform.

Wholesale Ethernet offers fixed communications providers a high-bandwidth service for linking up multiple sites across the UK for their large enterprise and business customers. Mobile operators can use the Wholesale Ethernet to better support bandwidth hungry services based on 3G and HSPDA technology. BT said it has a number of customers already confirmed for the service.

The service delivers core bandwidth speeds of up to 1 Gbps at launch, with a flexible range of options from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Access speed ranges will also increase from the current offer of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps to include 10 Gbps. At launch, the service will be available from over 100 Ethernet nodes across the UK, progressively rising to more than 600 by spring 2009.

BT said Wholesale Ethernet will become a key service underpinning its Wholesale's Managed Customer Network portfolio, whereby major UK operators are choosing to outsource some or all of their network management to BT Wholesale. Ethernet is forecast to be the UK's fastest growing access technology in terms of spend between now and 2012.http://www.btplc.com

Verizon Business Expands Ultra-Long-Haul (ULH) Network to Asia-Pacific

Verizon Business will deploy 155 kilometers of ultra-long-haul (ULH) network capability in Japan between Tokyo and Maruyama. The latest ULH expansion, part of Verizon Business' planned 2008 investment, is its first in the Asia Pacific region and complements its ULH deployments in the United States and Europe.

ULH offers the ability to transmit signals up to 2,000 kilometers (approximately four times farther than traditional technology) without regeneration. This allows the elimination of thousands of pieces of equipment and physical connections among network elements. The Verizon Business ULH system is capable of delivering both 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps signals. The company said that as it deploys 40 Gbps on selected routes, customers benefit from enhanced overall performance and responsiveness on those routes.

Verizon Business already has deployed and activated more than 51,500 kilometers (32,000 miles) of ULH in the U.S. and plans to add 6,437 kilometers (4,000 miles) by year-end. New key routes are Seattle to Portland, Ore.; Denver to Dallas; New York City to Baltimore; St. Louis to Memphis, Tenn.; Indianapolis to Nashville, Tenn.; Atlanta to Mobile, Ala.; Buffalo, N.Y., to New York City; Portland, Ore., to Sacramento, Calif.; and Boston to New York City.

In Europe, Verizon Business completed 3,100 kilometers (1,926 miles) of ULH network in late 2007 on the core backbone network and turned up service in April of this year. Main network hubs are located in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels.

When completed, the ULH network will extend 80,467 kilometers (50,000 miles).http://www.verizonbusiness.com
