Verizon Rejoins Unlimited Mobile Data Club

Verizon is launching an unlimited mobile data plan.

Verizon Unlimited provides unlimited data on a smartphone and tablet over its LTE network. The plan also covers HD video streaming, Mobile Hotspot, calling and texting to Mexico and Canada and up to 500 MB/day of 4G LTE roaming in Mexico and Canada. However, after 22 GB of data usage on a line during any billing cycle, Verizon said it may prioritize usage behind other customers in the event of network congestion. Mobile Hotspot provides 10 GB of 4G LTE data, after that, the speed drops to 3G equivalent.

Verizon Unlimited has two options:

  • $80 for unlimited data, talk and text on a smartphone with paper-free billing and AutoPay.
  • $45 per line for four lines with unlimited data, talk and text on smartphones and tablets with paper-free billing and AutoPay.

Verizon is now offering add on service to a connected smart watch, GizmoPal, or other connected device for $5 each month.

"We've built our network so we can manage all the activity customers undertake. Everything we've done is to provide the best experience on the best network – and we've built it for the future, not just for today," said Ronan Dunne, president of Verizon's wireless division. "We also fundamentally want you to have more choice. We're not limiting you to a single plan. If you don't need unlimited data, we still have 5 GB, S, M, and L Verizon plans that are perfect for you."

Verizon noted that its 4G LTE network already covers more than 2.4 million square miles and consistently delivers fast speeds in more places than any other network.

Nokia Debuts WING -- Worldwide IoT Network Grid

Nokia introduced its WING service -- a worldwide IoT network grid offering seamless IoT connectivity across technologies and geographical borders to address the transport, health, utilities and safety markets.

Nokia said it will offer a full service model including provisioning, operations, security, billing and dedicated enterprise customer services from key operations command centers. The company will use its own IMPACT IoT platform for device management, subscription management and analytics. Nokia IMPACT subscription management for eSIM will automatically configure connectivity to a communication service provider's network as the asset crosses geographical borders.

Customers are served on a multi-tenanted basis using a Nokia M2M Core that includes the Nokia Cloud Packet Core, which gives an enterprise customer access to their own discrete segment of the network core.

For Service Providers, Nokia WING means they can take advantage of a global federation of IoT connectivity services while offering their own excess capacity. Nokia WING also provides a full white label managed service model, allowing them to offer the service to their customers under their own brand.

Igor Leprince, head of Global Services at Nokia, said: "IoT connectivity as a managed service is an answer for enterprises to the current IoT deployments that are hampered by the patchwork of business agreements to connect devices around the world. Nokia WING will provide one global IoT grid. We cannot do this alone, and we are reaching out to communication service providers across the globe to collaborate with us so that we can extend the benefits of the connected world to more industries."

Three UK to deploy Cloud Native Core with Nokia

Three UK, part of CK Hutchison, is working with Nokia to deploy a fully integrated cloud native core network.

Nokia said the deployment will use its cloud software design to leverage the full benefit of the cloud architecture, including massive scalability and better reliability. Nokia will begin deployment of Three UK's new core network in multiple data center locations in the course of 2017. The flexible and scalable cloud platform employed will allow Three to increase efficiencies, while also benefitting from the breadth of Nokia's technology and services capabilities, including the expertise offered by the Global Cloud Design Center opened in the UK in September 2016.

Graham Baxter, Chief Operating Officer of Three UK, said: "Three carries 35% of mobile data traffic in the UK today.  The  cloud core network will enable us to scale even further and continue to offer great value and service innovation to our customers.  The agreement with Nokia will help us to continue delivering the UK's most reliable network."

Cormac Whelan, head of Nokia UK & Ireland, said. "This project highlights the breadth of Nokia's capabilities in technology and services, as well as our extensive ecosystem of cloud technology partners. I'm particularly proud of the role our new Global Cloud Design Center has played in first demonstrating the potential of an integrated cloud native core to Three, prior to working with the customer to tailor the design and delivery of a solution to meet its needs."

Gigamon Brings Enhanced Visibility into Encrypted Data-in-Motion

Gigamon added new inline capabilities to its GigaSECURE SSL/TLS Decryption solution for addressing use cases such as monitoring accesses to Internet-based services for risk/compliance violations, detecting malicious activities such as command and control (C&C) communications, decrypting TLS sessions that use modern cipher suites and above all, creating an efficient framework to manage encrypted traffic at scale.

The Gigamon SSL Decryption solution now offers a new GigaSMART traffic intelligence application that supports both inline and out-of-band decryption. The new set of supported ciphers include Diffie-Hellman (DH), Diffie-Hellman Ephemeral (DHE), Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) and Elliptic Curve, and operates in networks that range from 1Gb to 100Gb.

Gigamon said its new SSL Decryption solution automatically identifies all SSL/TLS traffic across any port or application by establishing a “decrypt once and feed to multiple tools” design for improved scale and resiliency. A key enabler of this solution is an advanced set of traffic selection and distribution capabilities in the Gigamon Visibility Platform that simplifies deployment of SSL decryption at scale. Furthermore, advanced policies enable traffic filtering and selective decryption based on URL categorization using the market-leading Webroot BrightCloud® Web Classification Service, domain names, and whitelist/blacklist policies, in order to meet data privacy and compliance requirements.

“Inline SSL decryption represents a strategic technology evolution that further expands the benefits of the Gigamon Security Delivery Platform,” said Ananda Rajagopal, vice president of products at Gigamon. “By offering SSL decryption as a service in the Security Delivery Platform complemented by strong policy enforcement, organizations can create a centralized ‘decryption zone’, enabling them to more easily see and manage their growing SSL/TLS traffic volumes, while enabling their security tools with newfound visibility into formerly encrypted traffic and threats.”
