Porto Digital Deploys Alcatel-Lucent for Metro Ethernet

Porto Digital, a public/private partnership between the Portuguese municipality of Porto, the University of Porto and the Enterprises Association of Portugal, selected Alcatel-Lucent to supply a metro Ethernet solution. Porto Digital plans to deliver a new wave of residential and business services, while interconnecting and providing low-cost broadband access to some 50 institutions.



Alcatel-Lucent's solution includes a carrier class multi-service edge router and new market standard Ethernet Service Switches, managed by a comprehensive carrier grade Service Aware Manager.

DIRECTV 10 HD Satellite Successfully Launched

The DIRECTV 10 satellite was successfully launched last weekend aboard an International Launch Services (ILS) Russian-built Proton Breeze M rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.



DIRECTV 10 is expected to begin operations in early September, delivering the first of up to 100 national HD channels by year-end.

JANET UK Deploys 40 Gbps Wavelength with Ciena

JANET, the high-capacity research network in the UK, has implemented what is believed to be Europe's first 40 Gbps wavelength service. The deployment uses the new 40 Gbps capabilities of Ciena's CoreStream Agility Optical Transport System.



The Ciena-enabled 40 Gbps service was delivered across a dedicated optical fiber link connecting the Canary Wharf and Kings Cross points of presence (PoP) in London, one of the busiest parts of the JANET network. Cienna's CoreStream Agility platform forms the foundation of the JANET backbone transmission infrastructure to deliver high-speed connectivity for end-users. Additionally, Ciena's FlexSelect CN 4200 Advanced Services Platform connects 19 UK regional networks to the JANET backbone. Both Ciena solutions offer the upgrade path to 40 Gbps per wavelength.



With the first 40 Gbps connectivity now in service between two PoPs, JANET plans to migrate its entire CoreStream Agility-based transport infrastructure to 40 Gbps interfaces during the course of 2008, dependent on network traffic growth.



Ciena noted that its solution enables new 40 Gbps wavelengths to be intermixed with existing 10 Gbps wavelengths on the same fiber system.

Sprint Offers 3G Wireless WAN Gear from Cisco

Sprint is now offering a wireless wide area network (WAN) solution that can link a customer's MPLS VPN-based network via its EV-DO Rev. A network.



The Cisco 3G Wireless WAN High-Speed WAN Interface Card (HWIC), which is now available from Sprint via its business sales channels, can be used with applicable Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISRs). The wireless connectivity can provide a remote location with primary access to an IP/MPLS network or the wireless connectivity can be use to provide redundancy for high-availability corporate requirements.



Sprint said it expects that a vast majority of its mobile broadband network will be upgraded to faster EV-DO Rev. A by year-end. The solution is also backwards compatible with EV-DO Rev. 0 and 1XRTT networks in areas where Sprint EV-DO Rev. A coverage might not be available.

Kodiak Networks Names CEO

Kodiak Networks, a supplier of service intelligence platforms for mobile operators, named John Vice as its new president and CEO. Vice is a former Nortel senior executive and Geyser Networks, an optical start-up.



Vice succeeds F. Craig Farrill, who co-founded Kodiak Networks in 2001 and has led the company since that time. Farrill will continue as a member of the Kodiak Networks board of directors.



Kodiak Networks noted that it has completed 19 commercial deployments with wireless network operators. Its Kodiak RTX is a flexible, multigenerational IMS platform.

Juniper Debuts E120 Broadband Services Router for Targeted Subscriber Awareness

Juniper Networks has expanded its E-series family with the introduction of the E120 Broadband Services Router (BSR), a compact edge router designed for IPTV and multiplay services. The new E120 mirrors the feature set of Juniper's E320 BSR, but in a smaller, compact factor. It delivers 120 Gbps of capacity and supports up to 64,000 individual subscribers. The new platform uses the JUNOSe operating system and existing line cards and interface modules of the E320.



Significantly, Juniper's E-series now supports service and subscriber-awareness, enabling service providers to determine on a second-by-second basis which IPTV or Video-on-Demand channels viewers watched. By translating Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) traffic into detailed program data, providers can gather real-time viewing statistics that can invaluable to national, regional and local advertisers constantly striving for more reliable metrics and greater accountability.



Juniper said this ability to deliver highly-targeted advertisements based on geographic, demographic, and usage-based patterns will enable advertisers to develop localized, highly-targeted ad campaigns. BT Selected Blue Coat's ProxySG Appliances for NHS

BT has selected Blue Coat's ProxySG appliances to accelerate Internet content to the broadband network that it is rolling out for the National Health Service (NHS) in England. The network, known as N3, replaces the NHSnet and forms part of what is believed to be the world's largest civilian IT project, the National Programme for IT in the NHS.



The N3 operations center routes Internet traffic to and from health care provider offices and Primary Care Trust groups through its Internet gateway. Blue Coat ProxySG appliances are deployed in-line at this primary gateway to speed content delivery and decrease bandwidth consumption. The N3 Internet gateway has a current capacity of 1 Gbps, but it is expected to scale to 2.5 Gbps as demand increases.

Intel Capital will invest $218.5 million in VMware's Class A common stock. VMware, which is a business unit of EMC, develops software for virtualization solutions, including a platform that virtualizes the Intel architecture. Google to Acquire Postini for Corporate Email Security Services

Google agreed to acquire Postini, a provider of corporate email security and spam filtering services, for $625 million in cash. Postini's services -- which include message security, archiving, encryption, and policy enforcement -- can be used to protect a company's email, instant messaging, and other web-based communications. The company's customer base includes 35,000 businesses and 10 million users worldwide.



Postini claims to handle over 1 billion messages per day.



Google said it plans to expand its portfolio of hosted business services by integrating Google Apps and Postini solutions. Google Apps, which includes Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Docs & Spreadsheets, and Personal Start Page, has been adopted by more than 100,000 businesses already.

LG-Nortel Licenses Global IP Solutions' VoiceEngine

Global IP Solutions (GIPS) VoiceEngine PC Advanced and VoiceEngine Mobile softphone applications have been selected by LG-Nortel in Korea to power its new UCS (Unified Communication Solution) and Phontage PDA and desktop PC telephony offerings. Phontage turns the PDA or desktop PC into a complete IP terminal, and incorporates both a softphone and videophone. It also enables multimedia collaboration based on real-time presence information.



GIPS said its VoiceEngine Mobile will provide users of LG Nortel's Phontage PDA with an on-the-move extension of their office phone system that works in the office or in the field using a built-in wireless LAN interface. The Phontage PDA includes GIPS' iLBC and wideband codec support.

AT&T Rolls Out Metro Wi-Fi in Riverside, California

AT&T launched its first Metro Wi-Fi network in Riverside, California. The citywide, Wi-Fi access service covers a 3-square-mile portion of the city, including downtown Riverside, Hunter Technology Park and the Adams Auto Center.



AT&T Metro Wi-Fi offers users a subscription-based high speed Internet access service at $7.99 for a daily (24 hours) pass and $15.99 for a weekly pass. Also included is a free, ad-supported broadband service offered through an AT&T relationship with MetroFi, a leading provider of free wireless Internet access.



In addition to other municipal applications, the city of Riverside is testing the service to run video to and from police department patrol cars. Officers also will use the public safety network for computer-aided dispatch, automated vehicle location and high-speed communications for queries to integrated justice databases to provide detailed information previously unavailable in the field.



Additional applications available with AT&T Metro Wi-Fi include traffic monitoring and coordination, video surveillance to minimize graffiti and illegal dumping and facility security.
