Broadcom ships 7nm Trident 4 programmable Ethernet switching silicon

Broadcom is now shipping its StrataXGS Trident 4 BCM56880 switch silicon with capacity scaling from 2.0 to 12.8 terabits per second (Tb/s). The new silicon, which boasts the industry’s highest Ethernet switching performance, also brings compiler-programmable packet processing and telemetry capabilities as well as compatibility with earlier generation Trident chips. This enables enterprises to utilize merchant silicon-based systems throughout their networks, from campus access and aggregation to data center top-of-rack and spine.

Trident 4 deliver 4x the bandwidth of Trident 3, which was introduced in June 2017. It also supports >5x the routes, >10x ACLs, and > 1 million counters.

Trident 4 also features runtime programmability, which allows numerous functions to be updated while the switch is in operation, without down time or dropped packets. For example, access control policy tables, size and type of telemetry metadata, packet trace, and packet drop can all be modified with no disturbance to packet flow.

Broadcom holds the dominant market share of the Ethernet switching silicon market.

“Trident 4 is delivering a 4x increase in bandwidth versus its predecessor Trident 3 in less than two years,” said Ram Velaga, senior vice president and general manager of the Switch Products Division at Broadcom. “Consistent, industry-leading innovation and execution by Broadcom is disrupting the economics of how networks are built today. We are thankful for our engineering team and strong partner ecosystem for helping bring these products and solutions to the market at a price/performance that is a fraction of the current systems.”

Key attributes and benefits of the new StrataXGS Trident 4 series include:

  •  Up to 128x100GbE or 32x400GbE switching and routing with a compiler-programmable architecture

Broadcom confirms mass production of 12.8 Tbps Tomahawk 3 Switch

Broadcom's StrataXGS Tomahawk 3 switch series is now in mass production.

The Tomahawk 3 series supports high-density, line-rate 400GbE, 200GbE, 100GbE, and 50GbE interconnect for massive scale-out of software-defined cloud data centers. The Tomahawk 3 switch series features multiple devices at 12.8Tbps, 8.0 Tbps, and 6.4 Tbps based on the industry’s most performant 50G PAM4 / 25G NRZ SerDes technology. All devices in the series have completed extensive functional, performance, and reliability testing and have been qualified for volume production.

“We are delighted and humbled by the widespread adoption of Tomahawk 3 based switching solutions in cloud infrastructure,” said Ram Velaga, senior vice president and general manager, Switch Products at Broadcom. “Our engineering team has executed to the demands of the largest cloud operators globally, including the most rigorous system and network-level qualification requirements – both in our labs and in customer testbeds. Network operators are able to immediately deploy Tomahawk 3 based fabrics, at scale, and with confidence.”

Ericsson predicts 1.9 billion 5G subscriptions in 2024

5G subscriptions are now expected to reach 1.9 billion in 2024, as operators ramp up deployments and users switch to 5G devices, according to the June 2019 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report. This is up from 1.5 billion forecasted in the November 2018 edition – an increase of almost 27 percent.

Ericsson cited rapid early momentum for 5G as the reason it has accelerated its forecast.

Additional highlights:
  • 5G coverage is forecast to reach 45 percent of the world’s population by end of 2024
  • In 2024, 5G networks are projected to carry 35 percent of the global mobile traffic
  • As 5G devices increasingly become available and more 5G networks go live, more than 10 million 5G subscriptions are projected worldwide by the end of 2019.
  • The uptake of 5G subscriptions is expected to be fastest in North America, with 63 percent of anticipated mobile subscriptions in the region being for 5G in 2024.
  • North East Asia follows in second place (47 percent), and Europe in third (40 percent).
  • Total mobile data traffic continued to soar globally in Q1 2019, up 82 percent year-on-year. It is predicted to reach 131 exabytes (EB) per month by the end of 2024, at which time 35 percent is projected to be over 5G networks.
  • There are 1 billion cellular IoT connections globally, a figure that is expected to rise to 4.1 billion by the end of 2024, of which 45 percent are represented by Massive IoT. Industries using Massive IoT include utilities with smart metering, healthcare in the form of medical wearables, and transport with tracking sensors.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, says: “5G is definitely taking off and at a rapid pace. This reflects the service providers’ and consumers’ enthusiasm for the technology. 5G will have positive impact on people’s lives and businesses, realizing gains beyond the IoT and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, the full benefits of 5G can only be reaped with the establishment of a solid ecosystem in which technology, regulatory, security, and industry partners all have a part to play.”

States seek to block T-Mobile+Sprint merger

A coalition of 10 state attorneys general, including California and New York, filed a lawsuit to block the proposed merger of telecommunications companies T-Mobile and Sprint.

The states argue that the merger would lead to higher prices and fewer choices for consumers, particularly low-income subscribers of the companies’ services.

“Although T-Mobile and Sprint may be promising faster, better, and cheaper service with this merger, the evidence weighs against it,” said Attorney General Becerra. “This merger would hurt the most vulnerable Californians and result in a compressed market with fewer choices and higher prices. Today, along with New York and eight other partner states, we’ve filed a lawsuit to block this merger and protect the residents of our state.”

“When it comes to corporate power, bigger isn’t always better,” said Attorney General James. “The T-Mobile and Sprint merger would not only cause irreparable harm to mobile subscribers nationwide by cutting access to affordable, reliable wireless service for millions of Americans, but would particularly affect lower-income and minority communities here in New York and in urban areas across the country. That’s why we are going to court to stop this merger and protect our consumers, because this is exactly the sort of consumer-harming, job-killing megamerger our antitrust laws were designed to prevent.”

Yamaichi debuts 400G QSFP-DD Pluggable Module Connector

Yamaichi Electronics introduced a small form factor connector for 400 Gigabit data networking applications and cage assembly mechanical parts.

QSFP-DD is similar to the current QSFP, but there are additional contact rows inside the structure design to realise double density by 8 channels for electrical signal transmission. Our mechanical design is QSFP-DD MSA compliant. It is also backward compatible to the current QSFP.

Yamaichi Electronics said its new QSFP-DD connector is designed for 200G and 400G technologies and to support 28 Gbps per channel NRZ, and 56 Gbps per channel PAM4 modulation. Moreover, the signal integrity takes into consideration 112Gbps per channel PAM4 modulation.

Yamaichi Electronics also offers customized heatsink solutions.

Deutsche Telekom commits to 100% renewable power as of 2021

Deutsche Telekom aims to use only electricity from renewable sources by 2021 and, by 2030, to reduce its CO2 emissions by 90 percent compared with 2017.

Also by 2030, Deutsche Telekom wants to lower the emissions from the production and utilization phases of its products and customer solutions by 25 percent.

“As one of the biggest DAX-listed companies, we take climate protection very seriously. We want to build the future for the generations to come, not rob them of it. Climate protection is an integral part of any future-proof business model,” says Tim Höttges, CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG, explaining the company’s climate protection targets.

Deutsche Telekom is the third DAX-listed company officially recognized by SBTi as contributing toward the target of limiting global warming to 2° C.
Only just over 200 companies worldwide have climate protection targets that have been certified as science-based and will thus contribute toward implementing the Paris Agreement of 2016. Deutsche Telekom is the third DAX-listed company alongside SAP and HeidelbergCement to have received a positive evaluation.
