Ikanos and DSP Group Demo Multi-Service Residential Gateway with DECT

Ikanos Communications and DSP Group are jointly demonstrating a reference design for a multi-service residential gateway with fully integrated Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) capabilities. The design integrates a DECT/CAT-iq Module from DSP Group with Ikanos' Fusiv Vx180 integrated gateway processor. The Fusiv Vx180 device combines Ikanos' VDSL2 customer premises equipment (CPE) PHY and its widely deployed Fusiv network processor architecture into a power and space optimized chipset that supports all key types of DSL technology, including ADSL, ADSL2+ and VDSL2. The Fusiv Vx180 also combines accelerator processor (AP) engines for data path functions with a MIPS-based CPU core, resulting in the preservation of host CPU processing power for enabling value-added applications. DSP Group's DECT/CAT-iq Module enables superior voice coverage and wideband audio (HD voice).

Ikanos Debuts Latest 100/100 Mbps VDSL2 Access Chipsets

Ikanos Communications introduced its "Velocity" family of low-power, central office VDSL access chipsets for providing up to 100 Mbps symmetric bandwidth while operating at sub 1 Watt (W) per port -- the lowest power consumption of any A/VDSL device on the market.

Ikanos said its symmetrical 100/100 Mbps and asymmetrical 100/50 Mbps Velocity chipsets each provide dramatically improved long-range performance surpassing all loop conditions specified in the Broadband Forum's WT-114 VDSL2 Performance Test Plan. In addition, Ikanos' Velocity chipsets are fully compliant with the WT-115 VDSL2 Functionality Test Plan, while operating in any of the VDSL2 spectral profiles (8, 12, 17 and 30 MHz).

Significantly, the Ikanos Velocity chipsets are the first CO A/VDSL semiconductor devices compliant with European Code of Conduct (CoC) power consumption standards. The company estimates over 30 percent power savings compared to the next best A/VDSL chipset offering.

The Velocity chips also feature Ikanos' iQV -- a combination of ITU G.inp compliant retransmission and Ikanos "Rapid Rate Adaptation" (advanced ITU-T compliant SOS, SRA and Bitswap) technologies -- enables the chipset to intelligently adjust its data rate instantly to provide optimal quality in any line condition. The iQV technology enable IPTV services to stay connected without a drop in image quality even in noisy line conditions.

The Velocity chipsets are software compatible to Ikanos' prior generation of CO chipsets. In addition, the Velocity chipsets -- which support all ADSL and VDSL profiles --
complement Ikanos' line of residential gateway chipsets, including the highly integrated Fusiv Vx180. Evaluation boards and samples for both the 100/100 Mbps symmetrical (FX100100-6) and 100/50 Mbps asymmetrical (FX10050-6) Velocity chipsets are available now.

Ikanos Partners with ASSIA to Advance DSL Dynamic Spectrum Management

Ikanos Communications and ASSIA Inc., which specializes in Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) technology, announced a partnership to accelerate the deployment of vectored DSL technology.

Under terms of the agreement, Ikanos receives a license to ASSIA's essential DSM patents and certain technology for the development of vectored DSL products -- also known as DSM Level 3 -- capable of delivering speeds of 100 Mbps and greater over existing copper loops. In addition, the two companies will co-market each others' products to the network equipment and service provider industries.

DSM enables service providers to maximize the rate and reach of their DSL services, while minimizing operating costs, through the automatic optimization of DSL networks and advanced, root-cause diagnostics analyses. DSM Level 3 (DSM 3) techniques can enhance and extend very-high-data-rate DSL (VDSL) downstream data rates in excess of 100 Mbps and upstream data rates in excess of 50 Mbps for fiber-fed DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs) in the neighborhood, at the curb and in the building. DSM technology also enables service providers to further extend the useful life of the copper infrastructure and compete effectively from a performance and economic perspective with more expensive passive optical networking (PON) and hybrid fiber coax (HFC) services.

DSM 3 is one of the three levels of DSM defined in the ATIS DSM Technical Report (ATIS PP-0600007) for managing noise, power and crosstalk in DSL systems of all types -- ADSL1, ADSL2/2+ and VDSL -- in both single service provider and unbundled, multiple service provider environments. Complementary standardization efforts have been completed in the ITU-T and the Broadband Forum, with ongoing standardization efforts underway for advanced DSM technologies.

DOCOMO and Partners Target Value-Added IMS Network Services

NTT DOCOMO and leading network equipment vendors announced the joint development and successful testing of common technical specifications for value-added IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network services. Partners include Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, and NSN. The technical specifications recently demonstrated by the six companies support deployment of data processing functions, such as image conversion, on the IMS network.

The companies said their new specifications will make it easier for telecom operators to develop value-added network functions. Examples of network based services could include the capability for a user to edit a picture on the network and share it, or a subscriber who converts a Japanese text message to English on the network before delivering it to the receiver.
successfully completed a demonstration test in August.

The six companies are committed to gaining adoption of the specifications by the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) project, a collaborative effort supervised by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSM Association) that seeks to pave the way for the introduction of commercial IMS-based rich communication services over mobile and, eventually, fixed networks.

LSI and Aricent Announce Strategic Collaboration for NGNs

LSI and Aricent are expanding their strategic collaboration to accelerate the deployment of wireless and wireline networking infrastructure and enterprise networking systems to the global marketplace. The companies currently offer pre-integrated software stacks for multi-service business gateways that run on LSI APP communications processors and have co-developed broadband networking software with IPv6 capabilities. Aricent and LSI have now extended their collaboration to wireless and additional wireline infrastructure applications.

LSI and Aricent expect that pre-integration of their products will enable OEMs to reduce product development cost and time to market by as much as 50 percent.

"Demand for next-generation rich media services continues to escalate, and the pace of innovation is causing product development intervals to shrink," said Charlie Kawwas, vice president of marketing, Networking Components Division, LSI. "A key element of our strategy is to partner with global providers like Aricent who can provide standard products and custom software services so OEMs can rapidly develop next-generation solutions at significantly lower cost."http://www.lsi.com

Ericsson's Vestberg Calls for Greater ICT Use in Climate Talks

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) must play a greater role in creating a low-carbon 21st century infrastructure, said Ericsson CFO and incoming CEO Hans Vestberg in a keynote address at the Broadband World Forum in Paris.

Studies show that ICT can reduce global CO2emissions by 15% by 2020. Vestberg argued that what is needed is to move away from incremental emission reductions to more transformative ones which can deliver measurable savings and "smarter" ways of doing things.

"For too long the need for CO2 reductions has been seen as a trade off between economic development and care for the planet. This does not have to be the case. Because the ICT sector can reduce CO2emissions substantially, government representatives have an opportunity to bring ICT onto the agenda for the upcoming United Nations framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen (COP15) in December," said Vestberg.

Alcatel-Lucent Shows 10G GPON-based LTE Backhaul

At this week's Broadband World Forum Europe show in Paris, Alcatel-Lucent is demonstrating a high-capacity 10G GPON backhaul solution for LTE. The company said that even though the 10G GPON standards are still being ratified, it is ready to meet the request for higher capacities in its customers' access networks.

Alcatel-Lucent noted that it is engaged in over 95 FTTH projects around the world, over 80 of which are with GPON.

"Introducing our 10G GPON technology, we want to show that Alcatel-Lucent continues to be a pioneer in broadband, uniquely positioned to be the partner of choice along our customers' transformation process," says Philippe Keryer, President of Alcatel-Lucent's carrier activities. "At the same time, we want to put a particular focus on 10G GPON's co-existence with its 2.5G predecessor. After all, approximately 60%-70% of a PON investment relates to the service provider's outside plant - so it is extremely important that the evolution to 10G GPON does not jeopardize today's investments. Deploying GPON today clearly continues to be a safe bet, a smooth migration path having been secured."

In addition, Alcatel-Lucent confirmed that it will be opening its GPON platform to third-party optical network terminals. This will allow service providers to benefit from a more competitive supply of third-party optical network terminals (ONTs). For ONT vendors, this will mean new business opportunities.
