EdgeQ samples its RISC-V 5G base station-on-a-Chip

EdgeQ, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, is now sampling its RISC-V based, 5G Base Station-on-a-Chip to customers developing enterprise-grade 5G access points, Open-Radio Access Network (O-RAN) based Radio Unit (RU) and Distributed Unit (DU).

The EdgeQ platform combines highly integrated silicon with up to 50 RISC-V cores and 5G PHY software for processing all key functionalities and critical algorithms of the radio access network such as beamforming, channel estimation, massive MIMO and interference cancellation. The design is programmable and provides an open framework for L2/L3 software partners. 

EdgeQ, which has been developing its platform for the past three years, said traditional merchant silicon vendors offer the PHY as a reference software, placing the development burden on customers to invest years of effort to operationalize into production. By abstracting this friction with a total platform solution including a production-readied 5G PHY software, EdgeQ frees customers from the substantial investments, resources and time typically associated with productizing the 4G/5G PHY stack.

EdgeQ pursues a feature subscription model for 5G basestation chip

EdgeQ, a start-up offering a 5G systems-on-a-chip, introduced a 5G chipset-as-a-service model in which customers can scale 5G and AI features as a function of subscription payments.  The service-oriented model would enable customers to scale from nominal to advanced 5G features such as ultra-reliable low latency communications, geo-location services, massive MIMO, fine-grained network slicing, as well as extending compatibility to other legacy wireless protocols. 

The company says its new service model is the very first in the chip industry to scale price, performance, and features as a function of need and use.  The potential is to elevate 5G Open Radio Access network (O-RAN) to an even more configurable, elastic, open wireless infrastructure. Enterprise network, telco, and cloud providers might also use the EdgeQ model to virtualize network resources.

Cisco posts quarterly sales of $13.1 billion, up 8% yoy

Cisco reported revenue of $13.1 billion for Q4 of its fiscal 2021, up 8% year over year. Net income on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis was $3.0 billion or $0.71 per share, and non-GAAP net income of $3.6 billion or $0.84 per share.

Total fiscal year revenue was $49.8 billion.

Some highlights for Q4

  • Product revenue was up 10% and service revenue up 3%. 
  • Enterprise orders up 25% y/y 
  • This marked the third consecutive quarter of acceleration in Commercial, Service Provider and Public Sector with all of these segments showing growth in excess of 20% y/y
  • Double-digit revenue growth y/y in Campus Switching, Catalyst 9000, High End Routing, Wireless and Zero Trust solutions along with strength in our security endpoint
  • Revenue by geographic segment was: Americas up 8%, EMEA up 6%, and APJC up 13%. 
  • Product revenue was led by growth in Infrastructure Platforms, up 13% and Security, up 1%. Applications was down 1%.
  • On a GAAP basis, total gross margin, product gross margin, and service gross margin were 63.6%, 62.7%, and 66.2%, respectively. 
  • Total gross margins by geographic segment were: 66.2% for the Americas, 65.0% for EMEA and 64.4% for APJC.

Nvidia's quarterly sales hit $6.51 billion, up 68% yoy

Citing record revenue from its Gaming, Data Center and Professional Visualization platforms, NVIDIA reported record revenue for its second quarter ended August 1, 2021, of $6.51 billion, up 68 percent from a year earlier and up 15 percent from the previous quarter.

GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $0.94, up 276 percent from a year ago and up 24 percent from the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.04, up 89 percent from a year ago and up 14 percent from the previous quarter.

T-Mobile US confirms over 47 million records stolen

T-Mobile US confirmed that hackers were able to steal records on approximately 7.8 million current T-Mobile postpaid customer accounts and just over 40 million records of former or prospective customers who had previously applied for credit with T-Mobile. 

The carrier said the breach did not include phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, passwords, or financial information of these customers or prospective customers. Some of the data accessed did include customers’ first and last names, date of birth, SSN, and driver’s license/ID information for a subset of current and former postpay customers and prospective T-Mobile customers. In addition, approximately 850,000 active T-Mobile prepaid customer names, phone numbers and account PINs were also exposed.

NEC and Fujitsu collaborate on O-RAN testing

NEC and Fujitsu are collaborating on interoperability testing between 5G base station equipment conforming to O-RAN specifications.

The initiative will be implemented as part of the "Post 5G Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project" under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan. 

Through this initiative, NEC, Fujitsu, and NEDO will accelerate the global reach of base station equipment that conforms to O-RAN specifications and contribute to stimulating growth and innovation in the open 5G market.

NEC is conducting trials at its Open RAN laboratory in NEC Europe Ltd., London, U.K., while Fujitsu is doing so at its laboratory hosted at Fujitsu Network Communications, a Fujitsu group company in the United States.

Portland General Electric picks ADVA's Oscilloquartz timing

Portland General Electric (PGE), one of the largest power utilities in the Western United States, is deploying ADVA's Oscilloquartz PTP grandmaster clock technology as it upgrades to packet-based synchronization and protects its network against GNSS vulnerabilities and cyberattacks, while conforming to PNT Executive Order 13905. 

PGE’s new timing infrastructure will distribute stable and accurate frequency, phase and time-of-day information between its power infrastructure data points, including PMUs, IEDs and substation LAN IEC 61850 communications, supporting rapid decision-making and automated assurance. The solution is built on the OSA 5410 and OSA 5420 Series of edgeSync+ grandmaster clocks. It features multi-band, multi-constellation GNSS receivers and supports multiple PTP profiles, including substation power and core telecom backup sync, while also allowing conversion between them and supporting legacy interfaces. The products are part of ADVA’s new aPNT platform, integrating threat detection, multi-source backup and ADVA’s intelligent Ensemble Sync Director, as the new trusted standard for PNT service assurance, control and visibility.
