EchoStar Reaches 13.585 Million Subscribers

EchoStar Communications' DISH Network service added approximately 170,000 net new subscribers during the second quarter of 2007, ending the quarter with approximately 13.585 million subscribers to become the third largest pay-TV provider in the U.S.



EchoStar reported total revenue of $2.76 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2007, an 11.9 percent increase compared with $2.47 billion for the corresponding period in 2006. Ericsson to Establish R&D Facility in The British Midlands

China Mobile Awards US$394 Million in Contracts to Motorola

China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) has awarded contracts valued at US$394 million to Motorola for its GSM network expansion project. The multiple contracts were signed in the first half of 2007 and about 60% of the revenue has already been recognized. The expanded networks are now successfully deployed across 16 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Si Chuan, Zhe Jiang, Hunan, Guangdong, Yun Nan, Fu Jian, Hu Bei, Shan Xi, Jilin, Liaoning, Jiang Xi, Anhui, Guizhou and Inner Mongolia.

Hungary's Pannon Selects Ericsson for Network Expansion

Pannon, the second largest mobile operator in Hungary and a member of the Telenor Group, selected Ericsson for the expansion of its mobile network, including deployment, integration and support services. Pannon has more than 3 million subscribers. Ericsson is sole supplier of Pannon's 3G radio access network and will support the operator in its continuing evolution towards advanced HSPA-based services. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Verizon Debuts FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide in Mass

Verizon introduced its interactive media guide for FiOS TV customers in Massachusetts. The guide, which has be offered to customers in Indiana, Rhode Island and parts of New Jersey since last month, helps customers find content from TV listings, video-on-demand catalogs and digital video recorders as well as personal music and photos from the home network.



Several hundred Boston-area customers provided input on the design of the new guide at Verizon's Waltham technology labs before its national rollout.



Verizon noted that it now has 8,600 titles in its video-on-demand library.

Motorola Unveils New "Coaches Headset" for NFL

Motorola unveiled its new "Coaches Headset" for use by the National Football League (NFL). The new headsets are lighter, thinner and more ergonomically advanced in comparison to their predecessors. The series of headsets range from the traditional over the head style which has improvements in ear comfort, acoustic sealing and microphone performance to the new "behind head" style which allows coaches the ability to wear a variety of hats while using the headsets.



Motorola also introduced a new Sideline Communication Center to replace the old "Phone Tables" that have been used for several decades. The unit which is mounted on a durable wheeled case, provides 16 phones for use by players, coaches and field personnel to use when communicating with coaches up in the press box.

PacketMotion Raises $7.5 Million for Enterprise Security

PacketMotion, a start-up based in San Jose, California, secured $7.5 million in its third round of funding.



PacketMotion offers an enterprise platform for analyzing network traffic in order to ensure security and regulatory compliance. The platform analyzes and interprets application flows, just like a traditional proxy, but without the latency and risk of downtime created by an in-line proxy deployment. It then extracts the critical meta data from each conversation without having to store large amounts of extraneous data.

Google began selling additional storage for its Gmail and Picasa web photo album services. Gmail currently offers 2.8 GB of free storage to all users. Similarly, Picasa Web Albums gives users 1 GB of storage just for Picasa Web Albums images. The new storage upgrade can be shared across Google services. Annual prices for additional storage range from $20 for 6 GB to $500 to 250 GB.
