European Commission Calls for Improved Energy performance of External Power Supplies

The European Commission is developing regulations aimed at improving the energy performance of external power supplies used in consumer electronics and office products, such as mobile and cordless phones, notebook computers, modems etc.

The regulation is expected to cut the EU's electricity consumption of these devices by 30% by 2020, compared to a "business as usual" scenario.http://ec.europa.eu/energy/demand/legislation/eco_design_en.htm

GigOptix Announces Production Run of 40G Silicon

GigOptix has started its production fabrication run of 40G parallel VCSEL drivers and Transimpedance Limiting Amplifiers (TIAs). The parallel VCSEL drivers and TIAs will enable a new generation of low cost active cable products for Storage Area Networks (SAN), High Performance Computing (HPC), and Very Short Reach (VSR) communication and consumer applications and are designed to be compatible with the Quad Small form Factor Pluggable (QSFP). Production parts will be available for delivery in January 2009.

Since engineering samples were released earlier this year, discussion with key customers led to improved performance and optimized power consumption in all designs. The power consumption for the HXR4104B was reduced to 56mW per channel while the HXT4104B power consumption was reduced to 63mW per channel representing an overall reduction of approximately 30% per channel. In addition, four power output settings were added to the TIA to allow the device to serve multiple reaches and PC board fanouts. Finally, the 10G TIAs will now have the ability to be used in both limiting and linear modes which allows them to be used in the widest number of applications. Potential applications include: IEEE 802.3ba (pre-standard) Ethernet transceivers, InfiniBand QDR transceivers and active cables, ROSA applications for the new 40G (4x10G) 802.3ba 40GBASE-LR specification, and backwards compatibility with DDR applications at 5 and 6 Gbps.

NTT DOCOMO and Partners Develop Platform for HSUPA Mobile Phone

NTT DOCOMO, along with partners Renesas Technology Corp., Fujitsu, and Sharp, outlined plans to jointly develop an SH-Mobile G4 single-chip LSI device and associated platform to support the HSUPA1/HSDPA2/W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE (2G) mobile telephony standards. Development of the platform is targeted for completion by early 2010.

The new SH-Mobile G4 will be fabricated with 45-nm process technology and will provide enhanced functionality and improved performance for applications handling HD3 video and 3-D graphics. In addition to HSDPA for fast downlink speeds (max. 7.2 Mbps), the SH-Mobile G4 will support HSUPA to boost uplink speeds to a maximum of 5.7 Mbps.

In 2004 NTT DOCOMO and Renesas began joint development work on the SH-Mobile G series of single-chip LSI devices, which integrate a baseband processor that supports dual-mode communication and an application processor. The SH-Mobile G4 will be the fourth product to emerge from this collaboration.

NTT Com Launches Security Log Management Services

NTT Communications has begun offering a package of security-log management services covering the monitoring, operation and management of security-related equipment of global corporate customers using its "Arcstar" virtual private network (VPN) services.

The package is the first in a series of new security services to be offered on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform managed by security experts at NTT Com's Security Operation Center. The center will help customers to strengthen their secure intranets for better IT governance, as well as save security costs through outsourcing.

The basic services of the package include 24/7 alive monitoring, the generation and storage of security logs, analysis and statistical reporting based on these logs, and 24/7 customer support. The security data are collected via a closed network in a secure environment, and then the logs are securely stored in NTT Com data centers.

Optional services include real-time notification of hazardous events, rental of security equipment and a service package covering the total operation of equipment.http://www.ntt.co.jp
