NEC Employs Atheros in DoCoMo Handset with AP Tethering Mode

Atheros Communications' AP Mode technology has been incorporated into NEC's new dual-mode handset (N-06A), which is now offered by NTT DOCOMO to its FOMA customers.

This new smartphone is the first on the market that uses Atheros AP Mode technology to allow users to connect their Wi-Fi-enabled laptops and devices to the Internet without an access point (AP) present. Atheros notes that this technology significantly expands the functionality of the handset, enabling a wide array of new applications for mobile users.

AP Mode, an optional feature of the Atheros AR6002 Radio-on-Chip for Mobile (ROCm) WLAN solution, allows handsets to operate in infrastructure mode, the primary wireless connectivity framework employed in access points, routers, laptops and other WLAN devices. Infrastructure mode offers significant advantages such as greater ease of use and lower power consumption over ad-hoc mode, a legacy approach to device connectivity. In infrastructure mode, the handset behaves like a typical AP, providing seamless connectivity to any WLAN-enabled client device without user intervention, whereas ad-hoc requires manual configuration of devices on both ends of the link every time a connection is created. With Atheros' AP Mode, client devices function in sleep mode when not actively transmitting or receiving data packets, resulting in superior power efficiency and extended battery life.

Atheros AP Mode is capable of concurrently connecting as many as eight Wi-Fi enabled devices in an open network environment, or up to six devices in a secured network. The clients connect to the mobile handset in AP Mode in the same way they would to a WLAN AP or router. Atheros AP Mode serves handsets and has also been introduced in new products such as wireless travel modems.

Broadcom Unveils Switching Fabric for the Network Core

Broadcom announced its new XGS Core switch fabric for use in a new class of low power, high density, highly reliable Ethernet switches for data center, enterprise and service provider networks.

The XGS Core fabric architecture connects seamlessly with Broadcom's StrataXGS switch silicon and software, enabling networking OEMs to bring a new generation of high performance modular Ethernet platforms to market with substantially lower development costs and significantly faster time-to-revenue. Currently, network equipment vendors typically develop their own custom ASICs and employ FPGAs for building core networking gear.

The Broadcom XGS Core fabric solution consists of three new product series: a high performance traffic manager and fabric interface (BCM88200 series), a scalable switch fabric (BCM88100 series) and a high density buffer manager (BCM56900 series).

The Broadcom BCM88200 series of non-blocking, fabric interface and traffic manager devices support up to 80 Gbps of full duplex bandwidth per device. The BCM88200 series:

  • Provides deep packet buffering using standard, low cost DDR3 DRAM memory for a substantial cost savings over specialized memories traditionally used for packet buffering;

  • Delivers a highly integrated solution, eliminating the need for costly external components, therefore, lowering overall system cost and power, and increasing line card densities; and

  • Integrates Broadcom's serializer/deserialzer (SerDes) technology for fabric connectivity that runs up to 6.56 Gbps per link, simplifying backplane designs for higher density and lower power systems.

The Broadcom BCM88100 series of scalable switch fabric devices support an industry leading 1.2 Terabits per second (Tbps) bandwidth per device enabling a non-blocking, Virtual Output Queued (VOQ) fabric that can scale to over 20 Tbps of overall fabric capacity. Using an advanced global scheduling architecture, the BCM88100 series delivers high fabric efficiency, guaranteed latency and deterministic Quality of Service (QoS) enabling a network architecture for virtualized data center, enterprise and service provider designs. Additionally, the BCM88100 series:

  • Integrates built-in scheduling support for 40 GbE and 100 GbE flows to future proof next generation chassis designs;

  • Provides a bufferless crossbar fabric that dissipates substantially less power than traditional buffered crossbars; and

  • Supports hardware-based fault detection and failover that is more than one thousand times faster than traditional approaches.

Two New Specifications for Near Field, Peer-to-Peer Device Communication

The NFC Forum, which promotes the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, released two candidate specifications that further the integration, implementation and standards interpretation of NFC technology.

The NFC Digital Protocol specification addresses the digital protocol for NFC-enabled device communication, providing an implementation specification on top of the ISO/IEC 18092 and ISO/IEC 14443 standards. It harmonizes the integrated technologies, specifies implementation options and limits the interpretation of the standards; in essence, showing developers how to use NFC, ISO/IEC 14443 and JIS X6319-4 standards together to ensure global interoperability between different NFC devices, and between NFC devices and existing contactless infrastructure.

The NFC Logical Link Control Protocol (LLCP) specification defines an OSI layer-2 protocol to support peer-to-peer communication between two NFC-enabled devices. This is essential for any NFC applications that involve bi-directional communications. The specification defines two service types, connectionless and connection-oriented, organized into three link service classes: connectionless service only; connection-oriented service only; and both connectionless and connection-oriented service. The connectionless service offers minimal setup with no reliability or flow-control guarantees (deferring these issues to applications and to the reliability guarantees offered by ISO/IEC 18092 and ISO/IEC 14443 MAC layers). The connection-oriented service adds in-order, reliable delivery, flow-control, and session-based service layer multiplexing.

LLCP is a compact protocol, based on the industry standard IEEE 802.2, designed to support either small applications with limited data transport requirements, such as minor file transfers, or network protocols, such as OBEX and TCP/IP, which in turn provide a more robust service environment for applications. http://www.nfc-forum.org/specs

Broadcom Accelerates Enterprise 802.11n Networks

Broadcom introduced a unified silicon and software solution for 802.11n enterprise wireless networks that combines wireless LAN (WLAN) silicon, switch silicon and networking software.

Broadcom said its 802.11n enterprise solution enables seamless mobility around the office while delivering the same network management, scalability, security, performance and cost advantages of a wired network.

Most enterprise wireless networks have been grafted onto an existing wired network using an overlay approach in which all WLAN traffic is tunneled to a centralized access controller where it is de-encapsulated and authenticated before entering the wired network. While this approach is workable for 802.11a/b/g networks, it creates bottlenecks in higher bandwidth 802.11n networks because it treats wireless as a special service running over the network rather than an inherent feature of the network itself.

Broadcom's solution includes several new products: the Broadcom BCM56520 unified wireless switch, the Intensi-fi BCM4748 802.11n access point (AP) system-on-a-chip (SoC) with Accelerange technology, and FASTPATH Unified Wireless Switching (UWS) 6.0 software optimized for unified wireless switching and unified wireless APs.

"While 802.11n improves Wi-Fi performance and expands wireless connectivity into new applications, it requires a new unified network architecture to avoid inefficiencies and traffic bottlenecks," said Martin Lund, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Networking Switching Business Unit. "Our expertise in wired and wireless networks makes us uniquely positioned to address this challenge. Not only are we the first to develop the silicon building blocks necessary for a unified network architecture, we are also the only vendor with software specifically designed to support it. With a unified wireless network, all of the performance, scalability and expense benefits of the traditional wired network are now available to support wireless traffic."http://www.broadcom.com
