Nokia Bell Labs Hits 10 Gbps Symmetrical with XG-Cable

Nokia Bell Labs has demonstrated a prototype XG-CABLE solution that achieves full duplex 10 Gbps rates over a traditional Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) cable systems and based on CableLabs' DOCSIS 3.1 architecture.

Specifically, the XG-CABLE test used two different cable scenarios:

  • Leveraging a point-to-point 100m coaxial drop cable, XG-CABLE was able to deliver 10 Gbps symmetric data speeds with 1.2 Ghz of spectrum 
  • Using HFC network topologies that utilize a Fiber-to-the-Last-Amplifier (point-to-multipoint coax drop) approach, XG-CABLE was able to deliver 7.5 Gbps of symmetrical data speeds.

Nokia Bell Lab's XG-CABLE utilizes innovative echo canceling technologies developed by Bell Labs to achieve full duplex transmission of 10 Gbps upstream and 10 Gbps downstream simultaneously.

Ericsson Develops Wi-Fi on Wheels for Comcast

Ericsson has packed six Wi-Fi access points into a Ford Transit 350 cargo van for what it calls "Wi-Fi on Wheels."

The mobile Wi-Fi unit, which has an range of about 500 feet, could provid coverage to as many as 2,500 people. It was developed in conjunction with Comcast.

The van is equipped for multiple network access connections, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) microwave backhaul, and onboard backup power and modular deployment elements.

"Driving innovation means not only bringing the best technology, but also enabling it to be used in new ways,” explains Angel Ruiz, President and CEO of Ericsson North America. "This new rapid deployment solution will mean fast dispatch and hassle-free setup for Comcast, so they can bring coverage to new hard-to-reach locations."

Gil Santaliz, CEO of NJFX, explains how this strategic position creates a convenient juncture for sub-sea networks to link up with fiber backhaul operators, resulting in pricing disruptions for transatlantic capacity.


The facility went live in September 2015 with 9 customers in the Tata landing station. Three more backhaul fiber providers then joined. Previously, subsea capacity was not available directly from the landing station. It was brought out for you to an in-land location such as 60 Hudson. NJFX says its position really disrupts that model, allowing purchasers of transatlantic capacity to go directly to the source.

AT&T to Acquire Quickplay for Powering OTT Video

AT&T will acquire Quickplay Media, a start-up that supplies software for powering over-the-top (OTT) video and TV Everywhere services, including AT&T’s U-verse TV Everywhere offering.  AT&T plans to use the software to support DIRECTV Now, DIRECTV Mobile and DIRECTV Preview — all of which are slated for introduction later this year. These new plans will let viewers stream DIRECTV content over the Internet to virtually any device.

Quickplay Media is currently owned by Madison Dearborn Partners. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company is based in Toronto.

AT&T plans to retain Quickplay’s more than 350 employees and contractors. In addition, AT&T said it will maintain Quickplay's high level of service and continue to support and expand its global customer base, grow its managed platform services and continue to enable other companies — from video providers to content distributors — to deliver premium video to any device and over any network.

“Our strategy is to deliver video content however, whenever and wherever,” said John Stankey, CEO, AT&T Entertainment Group. “Quickplay's multitenant IP distribution infrastructure, combined with AT&T's leading scale in IP connected end points, will allow us to host and distribute all forms of video traffic. We intend to scale and operate an industry-leading video distribution platform, and viewers will get the high-quality online video viewing experience they desire."

Saudi Telecom Tests Nokia's MulteFire for Unlicensed Spectrum

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has conducted a test of Nokia's MulteFire technology, which combines the high-performance of LTE with the simplicity of Wi-Fi deployment in unlicensed spectrum bands such as 5GHz.

The test - which used Nokia's FlexiZone small cells together with MulteFire software - showed how MulteFire can co-exist with Wi-Fi to deliver the high performance, high speeds and security offered by LTE in a densely populated environment.

Highlights:

  • Neutral Host test: MulteFire allows the delivery of high-speed services across multiple end-user devices regardless of their mobile operator, allowing anyone with a MulteFire device to access data using a MulteFire access point. The test showed up to 120 Mbps of total download and upload throughput.
  • Co-existence test: Tests showed MulteFire harmoniously co-existing with Wi-Fi when Wi-Fi was turned on in the same frequency and placed very close to a MulteFire access point.
  • Enhanced Coverage test: The test showed up to 50% better range and up to 2x better coverage in comparison to Wi-Fi.

Nokia said MulteFire complements heterogeneous networks (HetNets), which use a mixture of macro and small cell radios, allowing operators to meet the increased connectivity demands of future smart cities and the Internet of Things (IoT).

#MWC16: MulteFire Alliance Pursues LTE in Unlicensed Spectrum

There is a growing interest in using LTE in unlicensed spectrum, according to The MulteFire Alliance, which was launched just over a year ago to promote the technology.  The alliance is developing a global ecosystem for LTE in unlicensed spectrum and the further development of small cell technology. Ericsson, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm are key players behind MulteFire. Multiple demos were held at MWC16 this week in Barcelona.

The MulteFire Alliance technical specification group is developing the MulteFire specification based on 3GPP Release 13 and Release 14 advancements, including downlink and uplink in unlicensed spectrum. MulteFire is designed to initially operate in 5 GHz unlicensed bands and coexist with other technologies using the same spectrum. MulteFire can also act as a neutral host to serve multiple entities or deliver provider-specific services at enterprises, venues and small businesses. The Alliance plans to provide interoperability, conformance and coexistence specifications and to enable conformance testing to ensure a robust and interoperable ecosystem.

“The MulteFire Alliance is committed to developing a technology designed to meet global unlicensed band regulations, including Listen-Before-Talk features required in regions such as Europe and Japan, for a truly global reach,” said Stephan Litjens, MulteFire Alliance Board Chair and head of Innovation Steering at Nokia. “Our members are taking great care to ensure that MulteFire technology will harmoniously coexist with other technologies in unlicensed spectrum bands.”

The newest members of the MulteFire Alliance include Athonet, Baicells, Boingo Wireless, Casa Systems, Ruckus Wireless and SpiderCloud Wireless.

AWS Cites Momentum on SAP Business Apps on its Cloud

Amazon Web Services reported more and more of its customers, across virtually every industry and geography, are running SAP applications on the AWS Cloud. Examples cited include General Electric, Brooks Brothers, and Lionsgate.

SAP has verified and certified various solutions for production deployment on AWS, including S/4HANA, SAP Business Suite on HANA, Business Warehouse on HANA, SAP HANA, SAP Business All-in-One, SAP Business One, SAP BusinessObjects, SAP Database and Mobile Solutions.

Analog Devices’ Silicon Switch Targets Cellular Radio RF Front Ends

Analog Devices introduced a high power (44 watts peak) single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) silicon switch designed for cellular radio systems.

The new switch eliminates the need for external components, while reducing power consumption by operating on a single low-voltage supply with extremely low current consumption compared to existing pin-diode-based solutions.
