HPE and Arista Extend Partnership

Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced a new strategic partnership with Arista Networks to provide secure Hybrid IT solutions built on their software-defined data center infrastructure portfolio.

Specifically, beginning in November, HPE will begin selling Arista's switching products directly to HPE customers and partners.

This partnership expands on the existing HPE Converged Architecture agreement that focused on building application workload reference architectures as part of our HPE Converged Architecture ecosystem.  This partnership was first announced last June.

Moving forward, HPE said Arista will be its preferred networking partner in Data Center Networking as an infrastructure foundation for HPE’s software-defined infrastructure solutions.

The company noted that the addition of Arista switches to its current HPE FlexFabric and Altoline product lines enables it to address a wider variety of data center networking customer use cases and requirements.

HPE also said it will continue to invest in and position its existing solutions in the specific segments they serve best – namely traditional data centers (FlexFabric) and white box, enterprise and service providers data centers (Altoline).

Arista Adds Telemetry Features with HPE, SAP, Veriflow and VMware

Arista Networks is rolling out new telemetry and analytics capabilities for cloud networks.

The new Arista EOS (Extensible Operating System) and CloudVision provides visibility into network workloads, workflows, and workstreams on a network-wide basis.

Key features include:

  • Instantaneous event-driven streaming of every state change, providing improved granularity compared to traditional polling models.
  • State visibility from all devices in the network, including configuration, counters, errors, statistics, tables, environmentals, buffer utilization, flow data, and much more.
  • CloudVision Analytics Engine for storing state history and performing trend analysis, event correlation, and automated alerts. The basis for both real-time monitoring and historical forensic event investigation.
  • New Telemetry Apps for the CloudVision Portal, including the Workstream Analytics Viewer, providing simplified visualization of network-wide state for faster time to resolution.
  • An open framework, built on standard RESTful APIs as well as OpenConfig-based infrastructure, providing a point for integration into a variety of partner solutions and customer-specific infrastructure.
  • Expansion of existing EOS Telemetry Tracer capabilities across device, topology, virtual machine, container, and application components.

“The automated network operations in today’s cloud networks are dependent on both a highly programmable software infrastructure as well as deeper visibility into what the network is doing. Legacy approaches to visibility fall short of these cloud requirements,” said Ken Duda, CTO and Senior Vice President, Software Engineering for Arista Networks. “The Arista state-streaming approach provides an open framework with unprecedented levels of completeness and granularity for network state information. Our CloudVision platform harnesses streamed network state to provide customers of all types with clearer real-time and historical visibility into their network.”

Arista said its partner ecosystem can leverage many benefits of this new telemetry solution via access to the network-wide state through common API’s at multiple integration points. Arista’s partners can access the network state either streamed directly from the devices or from the central state repository within CloudVision. The Arista CloudVision Telemetry solution is endorsed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, SAP, Veriflow and VMware.

Orange to Join AT&T’s Open Source ECOMP Effort

AT&T, which recently announced plans to contribute its Enhanced Control, Orchestration, Management and Policy (ECOMP) platform to open source, announced that Orange is now planning to test the platform for creating and managing its own software-defined network. Orange is the first telecom company to join AT&T’s ECOMP effort. The carriers have agreed to collaborate on open source and standardization initiatives to accelerate the standardization of SDN and NFV.

AT&T plans to release ECOMP as open source software in conjunction with the Linux Foundation.

“ECOMP is a stake in the ground. It’s a declaration that networks of the future will be software-centric, that they’ll be faster, more responsive to customer needs, and more efficient,” said Chris Rice, Senior Vice President - Domain 2.0 Architecture and Design, AT&T. “Orange’s decision, as one of the leading international carriers in the world, is a great endorsement of that approach.”

“The analysis we conducted of ECOMP currently shows it to be highly agile and comprehensive, a testament to the commitment that AT&T has shown to address the key challenges that global service providers all face,” said Alain Maloberti, Senior Vice President Orange Labs Network at Orange. “We jointly believe that a platform like ECOMP needs a strong and dynamic open source community to drive industry adoption, and we will work with AT&T to create a community to develop a reference software platform for automated network orchestration and management. We plan to start experiments with ECOMP firstly in a lab environment, to be followed by a field trial as part of our On-Demand Networks program.”

Mirantis to Acquire TCP Cloud for Managing Continuous Upgrades

Mirantis agreed to acquire TCP Cloud, a start-up headquartered in Prague that specializes in  managed services for OpenStack, OpenContrail and Kubernetes. Financial terms were not disclosed. TCP Cloud has about 30 employees.

Mirantis said the deal will support its initiative with Google and Intel to enable OpenStack on Kubernetes by enabling it to continuously deliver OpenStack to customer data centers.

Mirantis plans to integrate TCP Cloud’s technology with its OpenStack release to provide a public cloud experience on customer premises. The design pattern for managing computing infrastructure in MK.20, commonly referred to as managing infrastructure-as-code, is also used today by top public cloud vendors like AWS, Google Compute Cloud and Microsoft Azure to maintain their clouds. Beginning in the next version of Mirantis OpenStack, MK.20 will become part of Mirantis’ Fuel software for deploying and managing OpenStack and related open source infrastructure software.

“The model for delivering infrastructure employed by traditional vendors is fundamentally misaligned with modern software development patterns. Disruptors of the digital era push new code to production multiple times a day, while traditional enterprise vendors ship infrastructure as packaged software once every few years and require forklift upgrades,” said Alex Freedland, Mirantis CEO. “Mirantis empowers enterprises to embrace the new, continuously delivered infrastructure model on their terms. TCP Cloud’s technology and expertise helps us accelerate that vision.”

“Mirantis and TCP Cloud share a vision of building open source software, and continuously delivering it to digital enterprises,” said Adam Scotnicky, TCP Cloud CEO. “By acquiring TCP Cloud, Mirantis will have increased influence in key open source communities and broader expertise in continuously delivered infrastructure. This powerful combination will help customers like AT&T and Volkswagen build software faster, and emerge as winners in the digital economy.”
