JDSU Reports Sales of $420.8 million, Impact from Thai Flood

JDSU reported quarterly sales of $420.8 million and net loss was $(5.8) million, or $(0.03) per share. This compares to net revenue of $471.8 million and net income of $9.3 million, or $0.04 per share for the prior quarter, and net revenue of $405.2 million and net income of $0.1 million, or breakeven earnings per share for the same period last year.


Communications Test and Measurement revenue of $185.2 million decreased by 12.4% compared to the prior quarter and increased 1.3% compared to the same period last year. Revenue from this segment represented 44.0% of total net revenue.


Communications and Commercial Optical Products revenue of $180.3 million decreased 10.9% compared to the prior quarter and increased 7.3% compared to the same period last year. Revenue from this segment represented 42.8% of total net revenue. �


Advanced Optical Technologies revenue of $55.6 million decreased 5.3% compared to the prior quarter and decreased 8.1% compared to the same period last year. Revenue from this segment represented 13.2% of total net revenue.


For the current quarter ending December 31, 2011, the company expects non-GAAP net revenue to be in the range of $375 to $405 million, lowered by $35-$45 million due to the flooding in Thailand.

Zayo to Deploy Cyan Z-Series P-OTS in Manhattan

Zayo has selected the Cyan Z-Series platform for an upgrade to its Manhattan n network. The deployment will enable Zayo to offer more advanced Ethernet and wavelength services to financial institutions as well as wholesale packet services to large carriers and wireless operators.


The Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platform (P-OTP) has been deployed in multiple Zayo markets over the past two years -- demonstrating carrier class reliability, scalable Ethernet services, along with valuable service management and SLA reporting capability in the Cyan360 Software portfolio. Mindspeed Introduces Comcerto Processor for Connected Homes

Mindspeed Technologies has extended its line of Comcerto 1000 SoC processors with a new device aimed at Service Offload Platform (SOP) boxes for the connected home. Mindspeed said SOP will make it possible for service providers to deliver value-added connected home applications without requiring the installation of enhanced set-top boxes (STBs) or multi-function broadband home routers (BHRs).


Mindspeed's single-core M83160 and dual-core M83240 processors are the first in a family of Comcerto 1000S application-specific SoC processors optimized for the cost, speed, bandwidth and compact footprint that are required for powering this new type of CPE hardware. SOP Boxes are expected to be roughly the same size as an external hard drive. Key features will include dual-core redundancy to ensure mission-critical service reliability, and both IPSec and secure sockets layer (SSL) hardware encryption to support secure transfer of user and usage information. ,The boxes will also feature an Ethernet connection to the router and a number of USB ports to accommodate various application client devices. The Comcerto 1000S processors will be supported by Mindspeed's OpenMind ecosystem, which includes a complete OSGi and Java application-development framework to speed SOP Box development for a wide range of connected home applications.

Calxeda Unveils ARM-based “EnergyCore�? Server-on-a-Chip

Calxeda, a start-up based in Austin, Texas, unveiled its ARM-based “EnergyCore�? Server-on-a-Chip designed for a new generation of high-density servers. HP is using the processors for its Project Moonshot.


Calxeda's EnergyCore processor SoC, which derives from earlier generations of ARM-based mobile processors, features a supercomputing-class 80-Gigabit fabric switch and an integrated management engine with power optimization software. It includes a full complement of server I/O features and a large 4MB ECC L2 cache, enabling a complete server node that consumes only 5 watts, including 4GB of ECC memory and a large capacity SSD.

In this interview taped at 4G World in Chicago, Iyad Tarazi, Sprint's VP of Network Development and Engineering, discusses the move to LTE and the newly announced agreement with Clearwire.


Key points covered:


LTE Rollout Phase 1 -- the LTE rollout is underway with the Network Vision program, which will touch every cell site over the next 2 years. This phase of the rollout will use the 1900 MHz spectrum and extend to 270 million POPs.


LTE Rollout Phase 2 -- expected in Q2 2013 will leverage features of Release 10, including interference management, capacity improvements, spectrum management, and possibly carrier aggregation. This phase of the rollout could also add the 800 MHz spectrum from the iDen network, as well as the 1.6 GHz spectrum from LightSquared.


The Clearwire Partnership -- WiMAX and the Clearwire relationship has been very good to Sprint, but it is time to look to LTE. The companies are in tentative agreement that the future is LTE and will work together to make FD-LTE and TD-LTE operate in a seamless network. That means developing a chip ecosystem, network interfaces and interworking between the two LTE networks, allowing for the 2.5 GHz spectrum to be accessible to Sprint customers.


Small Cells -- the HetNet architecture will be critical because mobile broadband traffic is increasingly an in-door experience. Hotspots can be very effective in addressing the indoor mobile broadband trend.


VoLTE -- Sprint will continue to invest in next gen voice, even on the CDMA network. The reason to deploy VoLTE will be to simplify the consumer experience. VoIP over LTE is likely at Sprint in the first half of 2013 to a subset of LTE handsets. There are likely to be multiple ways of supporting voice streams.

IEEE Begins 1588-2008 Certification Program

The IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP), in conjunction with Iometrix, is launching an 1588-2008 Certification Program for equipment and component manufacturers.

Novatel Wireless Posts Q3 Revenue of $113 Million

Novatel Wireless reported Q3 revenue of $113.3 million, a 50 percent increase from the prior year primarily due to the continued market reception of the company's 4G LTE mobile broadband devices and its acquisition of Enfora, as well as significant revenue from embedded solutions provided to original equipment manufacturers. GAAP net income was $4.5 million and includes a tax benefit of $11.2 million primarily related to the release of uncertain tax positions for certain years for which the statutes of limitations have expired.


"Our third quarter results reflect the significant progress we are making in our business," said Peter Leparulo, CEO of Novatel Wireless. "We are diversifying our product lines with M2M Asset Management Solutions and Services, as well as Embedded Solutions for both our mobile computing and M2M businesses. HP Aims Project Moonshot for Super Density Server Racks

HP unveiled its "Project Moonshot" -- an initiative to completely redesign server architecture to achieve new efficiencies in density, performance and energy usage. The effort leverages the newly unveiled Calxeda EnergyCore processors. Compared to today's blade servers, the big aims of Project Moonshot call for:



  • 89% less energy

  • 94% less space

  • 63% less cost

  • 97% less complex.


Project Moonshot will pack as many as 288 servers into a 4U chassis, enabling thousands of servers per telco cabinet. The servers will leverage common power, cooling, storage and management.


HP will open a Discovery Lab in Houston in early 2012 to test which applications benefit most from the new density.

Obama Nominates Washington Insiders for the FCC

President Obama nominated Jessica Rosenworcel and Ajit Pai as FCC Commissioners. Both nominees are Washington insiders with existing connections to current commissioners.


Jessica Rosenworcel, who would replace Michael Copps when his term ends in December, is the Senior Communications Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. She has worked for Senator Jay Rockefeller IV since 2009. Rosenworcel worked at the FCC from 1999 to 2007, serving as Legal Advisor and then Senior Legal Advisor to Commissioner Michael J. Copps (2003-2007), Legal Counsel to the Bureau Chief of the Wireline Competition Bureau (2002-2003), and as an Attorney-Advisor in the Policy Division of the Common Carrier Bureau (1999-2002). She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.


Ajit Varadaraj Pai, who would take the seat abandoned by Meredith Baker who took a job as a lobbyist for Comcast, is a Partner in the Litigation Department of Jenner & Block LLP. Previously, Pai worked in the Office of the General Counsel at the Federal Communications Commission, where he served as Deputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, and Special Advisor to the General Counsel.   • In May 2011, just months after voting to approve the Comcast-NBC Universal merger, FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker has resigned to take up a new job as senior vice president of governmental affairs for Comcast. In announcing her decision to take up the new post, Baker did not address the apparent conflict of interest.


    Meredith Attwell Baker, a Republican, was nominated for a seat on the FCC by President Barack Obama on June 25, 2009. Previously, she served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and Acting Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).


    In written statements posted on the FCC website, all four of the other FCC commissions expressed their congratulations and admiration for Baker.


    In approving the Comcast-NBCU mega-merger, the FCC and the Department of Justice imposed a number of conditions and commitments which generally will remain in effect for seven years. Among these, online video distributors (OVDs) are guaranteed the ability to obtain Comcast-NBCU programming. Comcast must also offer standalone broadband Internet access services at "reasonable" prices and of sufficient bandwidth so that customers can access online video services without the need to purchase a cable television subscription from Comcast.


    Sprint Establishes Mobile Security Council

    Sprint has established a Mobile Security Council to bring together key players in the mobile ecosystem to address protection, safety and security needs important to consumers and businesses. Charter members of the council are Cisco, IBM, Juniper Networks, Lookout, Motorola Mobility along with its subsidiary 3LM, and Samsung.


    Initial objectives of the Mobile Security Council:



    • Assess the current mobile security landscape and define an ideal state of security across the industry.


    • Influence baseline security standards for the industry (device, software and network).


    • Increase the level of awareness of security issues and options for the end user.


    • Encourage strong participation and buy-in from industry players.

    Opnext Posts Quarterly Sales of $86M, Notes Disruption from Flooding in Thailand

    Opnext reported quarterly sales of $86.0 million, down 7.6 percent sequentially and down 0.5 percent compared to the quarter ended September 30, 2010. Revenue from sales of 40Gbps and above products decreased 6% compared to the quarter ended June 30, 2011 as lower sales of 40Gbps line-side modules and subsystems were partially offset by higher sales of 40Gbps and 100Gbps client-side modules. EBITDA was negative $1.5 million compared to positive $2.0 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2011 and negative $6.4 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2010.



    "While reduced demand for 40G line-side modules and subsystems limited revenue in the September quarter, I continue to be pleased with our operational progress," said Harry Bosco, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Opnext. "Cash used in operations was less than $2.0 million and we again delivered positive Adjusted EBITDA despite lower revenues and a stronger Japanese yen.
