T-Mobile US launches nationwide NB-IoT

T-Mobile launched its Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) service across the United States -- the first carrier to do so.

NB-IoT operates on spectrum guard bands, which T-Mobile describes as the network equivalent of driving down the shoulders on the highway. It is a low power, wide area network (LPWAN) LTE-Advanced technology boasting low power usage, long battery life and low device cost. T-Mobile was also first to trial NB-IoT in the U.S. last year.


Significantly, T-Mobile’s NB-IoT plan costs just $6 a year – one tenth of Verizon’s Cat-M plans – for up to 12 MB per connected device. Several NB-IoT modules based on Qualcomm MDM9206 LTE IoT modem are certified for use on T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile worked with Ericsson, Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies to deploy nationwide NB-IoT.

T-mobile also announced its new partner program, T-Mobile CONNECT, to help IoT solution providers collaborate and bring their products and services to market on T-Mobile’s network -- and into the hands of customers -- more quickly.

“We’re always innovating to bring customers the latest technology, and NB-IoT is the globally-preferred standard to power the rapidly expanding world of IoT applications,” said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer at T-Mobile. “So of course, T-Mobile is the first to bring NB-IoT to the U.S., lighting up new capabilities to connect massive numbers of devices at low cost.”

For applications that require more bandwidth and voice, T-Mobile also offers Cat-1 IoT Access Packs. In addition, the new T-Mobile CONNECT program will help IoT solution providers accelerate the development and commercialization of their products and solutions.

T-Mobile US to deploy Nokia 5G in 600MHz and 28GHz mmWave this year

T-Mobile U.S. announced plans to build out 5G in 30 cities this year and Nokia confirmed that its equipment has been selected for the rollout. T-Mobile will deploy its 5G RAN using both 600MHz and 28GHz millimeter wave spectrum.

Nokia will begin building the network during the second quarter of 2018, completing the deployment during 2020. Financial terms were not disclosed.

T-Mobile said New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Las Vegas will be first to get 5G. Service, of course, will require a 5G smartphone and these are expected to launch early in 2019.

Nokia listed the following elements in T-Mobile's deployment:

  • Nokia AirScale baseband and remote radio heads supporting 5G NR, and ReefShark-enabled portfolio in the 600MHz and 28GHz mmWave spectrums. The Nokia 5G-ready AirScale radio access portfolio, which is software upgradable to full 5G services will provide enhanced RAN support for 4G and 5G T-Mobile subscribers
  • Nokia installed Core technologies will be enhanced to support 5G, implementing a cloud-native architecture, powered by the Nokia AirFrame data center solution, Subscriber Data Management, CloudBand and Cloud Packet Core
  • Nokia Mobile Anyhaul framework to enable ultra-broadband connectivity
  • Nokia Digital Experience and Monetization solutions will support 5G device management and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) solutions
  • Nokia CloudBand Management and Orchestration (MANO) software suite will automate cloud application deployment and lifecycle management
  • Nokia NetAct virtualized network management software provides capabilities for troubleshooting, assurance, administration, software management and configuration, and managing the smooth evolution to 5G
  • Nokia Global Services expertise, including automation to speed the rollout and analytics to help optimize network performance

Vodafone activates its first gigabit residential service in UK

Vodafone began offering home broadband speeds of 1 Gbps, about 20 times the current UK average of 46 Mbps, in Milton Keynes. The full fibre home broadband service is first being tested in 50 customer homes before it is made widely available across the city.

Nick Jeffery, Vodafone UK Chief Executive, said: “Full fibre is vital to our digital economy and to the UK’s future as a digital leader, yet just 3% of UK premises currently have access to it. That’s why we are offering Vodafone Gigafast Broadband and making it available on a mass scale, reaching a million UK homes by 2021.”

Zayo signs cloud provider for One Wishire data center

A global cloud provider is leasing space at Zayo’s One Wilshire data center location in Los Angeles, bringing the occupancy rate to more than 60 percent since the opening of the data center last fall. Zayo will provide colocation, dark fiber and lit solutions for the cloud company.

The One Wilshire location is Zayo’s preeminent point of connectivity between North America and Asia Pacific. Tenants are able to connect to over 240 carriers within the building, along with nearly 110 cloud and IT service providers.

“Our unique combination of interconnection-rich colocation and extensive connectivity options were key factors in significantly expanding our business with this customer,” said Marcus Anderson, general manager, Zayo Colocation. “Our infrastructure ensures that the tenant has the performance needed to process, move and store growing volumes of data for its customers.”

Dell'Oro: 20 million new base station shipments over 5 years

Base station shipments are expected to eclipse 20 million over the next five years. according to a newly published forecast report by Dell'Oro Group.

Highlights of Dell'Oro's Mobile RAN 5-Year Forecast Report:

  • 5G NR will scale at a significantly faster pace than LTE.
  • 5G NR millimeter wave projections now reflect a faster 5G momentum in the US market and positive results with the millimeter wave trials.
  • 5G NR Massive MIMO transceiver shipments will eclipse 50 million.

"There are reasons to be optimistic about the mobile infrastructure market over the next five years," said Stefan Pongratz, Senior Director with the Dell'Oro Group. F5 appoints Michel Combes to its Board

F5 Networks announced the appointment of Michel Combes, CEO of Sprint, to its board of directors.

Before joining Sprint as CEO earlier this year, Combes served in a number of senior leadership roles, including CEO and chief operating officer at Altice, and chairman and CEO of SFR Group. Additional executive experience includes positions as CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, CEO of Vodafone Europe, chairman and CEO of TDF Group, and chief financial officer and senior executive vice president of France Telecom. He is a graduate of École Polytechnique and Télécom ParisTech.

“The service provider market has long been a core area of F5’s business, and we’re gratified to add an individual of Michel’s industry stature and expertise to our board,” said François Locoh-Donou, president and CEO of F5. “Service providers and their customers are intimately familiar with the power of applications. Sprint names Michel Combes as president and CFO

Michel Combes has been appointed President & Chief Financial Officer of Sprint, reporting to company CEO Marcelo Claure. Combes will also be appointed to Sprint's Board of Directors at a later date.

Combes previously served as CEO of Altice N.V., a convergent global leader in telecom, content, media, entertainment, and advertising, and as chairman and CEO of SFR Group, a leading French telecommunications and media company.  Earlier in this career, Combes served as CEO of Vodafone Europe and chairman and CEO of TDF, a French tower company. Combes also served as an advisor to Brightstar, the company founded by Claure, to support its global expansion. He is a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique and Telecom ParisTech.

Cambium Networks supplied access points for Thai cave rescue

Cambium Networks supplied a wireless network that was used by the rescuers of the 12 football players and their coach who were trapped in the cave in Thailand.

Specifically, at the on-site rescue command post, local telecom solutions provider KING IT worked with regional telco 3BB to create a hotspot at the cave entrance with Wi-Fi connectivity provided by Cambium Networks cnPilot e500 outdoor access points. Two Cambium Networks cnPilot e500 enterprise outdoor network access points were used; one was placed facing the entrance of the cave, while the other access point was placed at the "information tent", where up to 200 users relied on the network.

"Cambium Networks equipment helped provide Wi-Fi coverage at the cave entrance site during the rescue exercise, and we are very grateful to have contributed connectivity technology to this amazing effort," said Atul Bhatnagar, President and CEO of Cambium Networks.
