Global Broadband Installed Lines Reach 429.2 million

The installed based of broadband lines across the globe now tops 429.2 million



North America was again a major factor in the continued IPTV success story, with impressive growth of more than 15 percent over the last quarter and a huge 94.2 percent year-on-year improvement. There are now nearly 4.5 million lines of IPTV across North America.

Qwest to Integrate DSL into Smart Grid with CURRENT Group

Qwest Communications, in partnership with CURRENT Group, are developing a framework that allows electric utilities to integrate intelligent grid sensing capabilities with DSL. This allows utilities to implement a high performance smart grid with the existing Qwest network. The companies said they already have proven the technology's interoperability by utilizing CURRENT's intelligent sensors and OpenGrid platform and Qwest's DSL network as part of Xcel Energy's SmartGridCity in Boulder, Colorado.

Wind River Adds Virtualization to its Multicore Software

Wind River has released a new Hypervisor capability that supports virtualization on single and multicore processors. It provides integration with Wind River's operating systems (VxWorks and Wind River Linux) and supports other operating systems. The Wind River Workbench development tools suite has been extended to support developing software that runs on the Wind River Hypervisor.


"Wind River Hypervisor brings virtualization to devices so embedded developers can achieve improved device functionality on smaller form factors," said Tomas Evensen, chief technology officer, Wind River. "We're responding to significant market demand by extending our industry-leading multicore software solution to include a high-performance hypervisor for virtualization."


Earlier this year, Wind River introduced VxWorks 6.7, which allows system designers to select the optimal multicore design configuration, AMP or SMP, to deliver next-generation devices with higher performance while maintaining or reducing power consumption. Now, Wind River Hypervisor enables systems designers to use a supervised AMP configuration that makes an AMP system easier to configure.


Separately, Wind River also announced today VxWorks MILS Platform 2.0, the latest addition to the industry-leading VxWorks product portfolio, which leverages Wind River Hypervisor technology to provide virtualization. The virtualization provided by the hypervisor, coupled with the security properties of the entire VxWorks MILS separation kernel, results in a MILS architecture designed to provide a high level of assurable security.

MRV Suspended from Trading on Nasdaq

Trading of MRV COMMUNICATIONS' (Nasdaq:MRVC) common stock on the NASDAQ Stock Market has been suspended. Trading of MRV's common stock will be available for quotation on the Pink OTC Markets, Inc. (the "Pink Sheets") under the symbol "MRVC". MRV said it is committed to the goal of completing its financial restatement, regaining compliance with Nasdaq's listing requirements and focusing on the needs of its customers.

Clearwire Launches in Atlanta with Motorola WiMAX

Clearwire launched its Clear 4G mobile WiMAX service in Atlanta, Georgia using devices and infrastructure provided by Motorola, the end-to-end system provider for this deployment. Atlanta is the second city where Clearwire is using Motorola's WiMAX solution.


In addition to its WiMAX networks and devices, Motorola has been supplying Clearwire with its pre-WiMAX Expedience devices and infrastructure giving Clearwire customers in 46 markets throughout the US access to wireless broadband service. http://www.motorola.com/wimax

Tektronix Extends Mobile Network Monitoring Capability for Femtocells

Tektronix Communications introduced a femtocell monitoring solution based upon its GeoProbe network monitoring platform.


Tektronix Communications' GeoProbe Femtocell solution provides real time, end-to-end network visibility and trouble-shooting capability for operators deploying femtocell access networks alongside their UTRAN mobile access networks. Adoption of femtocell networks is projected to continue into 4G as the need increases for more cost-efficient capacity and bandwidth growth. As part of the Unified Assurance portfolio, the GeoProbe platform of monitoring solutions will support both standards 3GPP release 8 and vendor proprietary versions of the femtocell interfaces.


Femtocell networks rely on a new architecture that leverages existing 3G network elements (MSC, SGSN) but also includes new network interfaces (Iuh) and new network elements (HNB, HNB-GW, Security-GW, etc.) that are unproven in a mobile network environment where the expectations for quality are very high.


Tektronix said that for operators deploying femtocell networks, this represents a significant quality assurance risk, especially given the fact that the HNB located at the customer premise will be exposed to external factors unforeseen by traditional network elements that are typically housed at the central office or in a secure location.


"Tektronix Communications' femtocell monitoring solution enables operators adopting femtocells to ensure the same level of QoS in their femtocell networks as they have come to expect in their mobile network with the ability to monitor and troubleshoot customer impacting problems all the way to the femto home node B," said Mark Driedger, vice president and general manager of Network Monitoring for Tektronix Communications. AT&T Rolls Out More U-verse Enhancements, Bandwidth Boost

AT&T announced a series of enhancements for its U-verse service, including upgraded DVR capabilities and user interface enhancements for all customers, increased downstream speeds for broadband customers, and a new On Demand Top Picks application for customers in select markets.


Exclusive new AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR feature. AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR capabilities will be expanded market-by-market in the upcoming weeks to add the ability to schedule and manage recordings from any U-verse receiver. The feature allows customers to set or delete recordings from any room in their home, instead of from the DVR receiver room only. The enhancement follows the launch of Total Home DVR in 2008, which allows all U-verse DVR customers to watch standard and High Definition recorded shows on up to eight connected TVs in the home -- all from a single DVR.


All AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Max customers have been given increased downstream speeds from up to 10 Mbps to up to 12 Mbps -- a 20 percent increase in speed at no extra cost.


New On Demand Top Picks application. The new application will enable U-verse TV customers to view On Demand recommendations based on their past video rental history and view a list of the top ten On Demand titles U-verse TV customers are renting. The app will also give customers the ability to rate a movie they have previously rented, which will be averaged into other U-verse TV customer ratings and displayed next to the title in the On Demand recommendations list. On Demand Top Picks will be available to customers in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Hartford, St. Louis, Atlanta, Sacramento, San Antonio and Austin within the next few weeks. AT&T plans to make the app available to all U-verse TV customers next year.

Hughes to Launch 100 Gbps High Throughput Satellite in 2012

Hughes Network Systems unveiled plans to launch a next-generation, high throughput satellite in the first quarter 2012 to expand its HughesNet broadband Internet service across North America. The new satellite is being designed to deliver over 100 Gbps of aggregate throughput and use an enhanced version of the IPoS standard. It will also employ a multi-spot beam, bent pipe Ka-band architecture.


Space Systems/Loral has been selected to manufacture the new Hughes satellite, based on its SSL 1300 platform, which has the proven flexibility for a broad range of applications and is expected to provide service for 15 years or more.


The new geostationary satellite will augment the SPACEWAY 3 satellite system, the world's first with on-board switching and routing, which Hughes put into commercial service in April 2008.

Verizon Wins Managed Trusted IP Contract from General Services Administration

Verizon Business was awarded a contract by the U.S. General Services Administration to provide Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Services (MTIPS) under the federal Networx Universal program. The GSA developed MTIPS to help agencies comply with the Office of Management and Budget's Trusted Internet Connections initiative, which mandates that agencies use fewer and more secure Internet connections.


Verizon Business is a prime contactor under Networx Universal, which is scheduled to run through 2017.


MTIPS is designed to significantly enhance the security of federal agency IP traffic. Verizon Business said its offering uses secure IP portals meeting Federal Informational Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA) requirements for highly secure environments, providing a full suite of embedded security services such as managed firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, anti-virus and e-mail scanning services, along with connections to the public Internet that are redundant, highly available and scalable.


Verizon Business Private IP service, which is physically separate infrastructure from the public Internet, securely connects federal agencies to the TIC portals. In addition, Verizon Business has incorporated within the MTIPS offering the flexibility for agencies to design and add custom solutions around the basic services.


Verizon Business will manage its MTIPS solution through its Government Network Operations and Security Centers (GNOSCs) so that the MTIPS clients are assured that positive and secure operational oversight is maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The GNOSCs -- state-of-the-art facilities in Northern Virginia and Cary, N.C. -- were built to government security specifications and are dedicated to supporting the unique security and operational requirements of federal government customers.

BridgeWave Supplies Gigabit Backhaul for Kulacom in Jordan, Bahrain

BridgeWave Communications has supplied a gigabit wireless backhaul solution for Kulacom's WiMAX network. Specifically, Kulacom's Jordan and Bahrain operations are using BridgeWave's AdaptRate 80 GHz product, AR80X, for a reliable carrier-class backhaul solution to provide high-capacity WiMAX connectivity to support VoIP and data services.


Kulacom, established in 2006, provides voice and Internet services to emerging markets. Kulacom Jordan secured a 3.6 GHz frequency license in January 2008. Their services include point-to-point IP connectivity, VoIP and data hosting. Recently, the Jordan operation expanded its services to include WiMAX Internet, providing uninterrupted, fast and reliable connections to Kulacom customers.


Additional gear has been deployed in Bahrain. BridgeWave said that despite the harsh climactic conditions of the region including severe heat, high winds and heavy rainfall, the AR80X wireless links continue to perform flawlessly.
