PowerDsine Announces 4-Channel PoE Chip

PowerDsine announced a 4-channel Power over Ethernet Manager developed jointly with Motorola. The four-port IEEE 802.3af-compliant chip integrates power, analog and advanced digital logic functions into one device. Its use in low-port count Ethernet switches, Small Office Home Office (SOHO) routers and midspans allows next generation network devices to share power and data over the same cable. PowerDsine already offers a 12-port PoE solution. The two chips could be used in combination, enabling switch manufacturers to create autonomous self-maintained PoE designs from 4 to 48 ports, with detection, real-time protection and AC or DC disconnection. http://www.powerdsine.com/

ntl Deploys World Wide Packets for Ethernet Access

ntl is deploying World Wide Packets' "LightningEdge" suite of Ethernet access products to deliver broadband services to business clients in the UK. The services will be delivered over ntl's fiber infrastructure. Financial terms were not disclosed. http://www.worldwidepackets.com

Equant Builds 72-site IP VPN for Swiss Re

Equant has built a 72-site MPLS-based IP VPN solution for Swiss Re, one of the world's leading reinsurance companies. Swiss Re, through a three-year contract renewal, has migrated from its legacy network to Equant IP VPN. Financial terms were not disclosed. http://www.equant.com

Cambridge Broadband Raises $15 Million for BWA

Cambridge Broadband announced the closing of its Series C financing round totaling $15.25 million for its fixed wireless access technology. The company claims a 37% share of the broadband wireless market in China. The round was led by a new investor, Accel Partners.



Cambridge Broadband's VectaStar system supports multiple carrier-class services simultaneously, each with QoS. The system offers a 480 Mbps base station capacity that can deliver up to 60 Mbps full-duplex per customer. It has non-line-of-sight capability and self-backhaul at ranges up to 20 km. http://www.cambridgebroadband.com

Telenor Awards DSL Contract to Alcatel

Telenor, the leading Norwegian telecom provider, awarded a frame contract to Alcatel for the expansion of its existing DSL network in Norway, as well as the deployment of new DSL networks in other countries. The deal covers Alcatel's complete portfolio of DSL technology including Multi-ADSL and G.shdsl as well as new functionality for triple play services. Financial terms were not disclosed.



The agreement follows on a number of global agreements between Telenor and Alcatel, in which Alcatel delivered broadband network equipment, network management systems, and point-to-multipoint wireless broadband access. Alcatel's systems are today deployed in Telenor's network which spans Norway, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Alcatel also supplies broadband network and access equipment to Telenor's affiliate in Russia. http://www.alcatel.com

ADTRAN Offers Access Router with Dual T3s

ADTRAN introduced a new line of access routers supporting up to two unchannelized DS3s. The new NetVanta line is targeted at small- to medium-sized businesses needing a larger-capacity router to simultaneously support corporate Frame Relay connectivity and secure Internet access from a single platform. It t has two auto-sensing 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN ports for LAN segmentation or DMZ applications and an optional redundant AC power supply to guarantee availability. Users can also add optional VPN capability for up to 2,000 IP-Sec tunnels supporting DES, 3DES, or AES encryption. ADTRAN's OS also provides a stateful inspection firewall; QoS via Priority Queuing, DiffServ marking and packet recognition for delay-sensitive traffic like VoIP; VLAN Trunking (802.1Q) for routing between VLANs; Network Address Translation (NAT) for the concealment of private IP addresses; and optional VPN for secure corporate connectivity across the Internet. http://www.adtran.com

Spirent Announces Architecture for Converged Testing

Spirent Communications introduced its Architecture for Converged Testing (ACT) based on its Abacus 5000 IP Telephony Test Migration System. The enterprise test solution reveals interactions between voice, video and data, helping to mitigate performance risks prior to deployment of IP telephony platforms. Volo Deploys Sonus Networks' Packet Voice

Volo Communications, a next generation wholesale service provider and technology company, has deployed packet voice solutions from Sonus Networks in its nationwide IP network. The deployment includes the Sonus GSX9000 Open Services Switch. Financial terms were not disclosed.



Volo Communications uses softswitching technology developed by its sister company, Caerus Networks Inc. . Intelsat to Acquire COMSAT

Intelsat agreed to acquire the assets of end-to-end communications services integrator COMSAT General Corporation for approximately $90 million. COMSAT General is a provider of integrated satellite-centric communications services to commercial and government users, including the resale of satellite capacity purchased from Intelsat and other operators. In addition, COMSAT General provides value-added services such as bandwidth management and host nation agreement management. Level 3 Announces VoIP Technology Alliance Program

Level 3 Communications has launched a VoIP Technology Alliance Program that lets participants test their equipment with Level 3's IP-based softswitch platform and VoIP services. Vendors currently participating in the program include: Acme Packet, Avaya, BroadSoft, Convedia, CosmoCom, dynamicsoft, Edgewater Networks, IP Unity, Lucent Technologies, Netrake,

Cisco Reports Revenue of $5.6 Billion, up 4% Sequentially

Cisco Systems reported quarterly revenue of $5.6 billion, a 21.7% increase year over year and a 4.1% increase quarter over quarter. Operating cash flow was: $2.4 billion and net income (GAAP) was $1.2 billion, or $0.17 per share, compared with $987 million or $0.14 per share for the same period last year and compared with $724 million or $0.10 per share for the preceding quarter.



"We are pleased to have achieved record earnings per share this quarter-marking our eighth consecutive quarter with pro forma net income exceeding $1 billion, and the strongest cash flow from operations in the company's history," said John Chambers, president and CEO, Cisco.



Some highlights:

  • there was sequential order growth across all major product categories


  • IP telephony is hot. During the quarter, Cisco shipped its 3 millionth phone. It took over 30 months to ship the first million phones, it took approximately 13 months to ship the next million phones, and in the last eight months, Cisco shipped its next million phones.


  • John Chambers expects the company to be increasingly active in acquisitions and investments over the next year, noting that Cisco has identified a number of existing and adjacent markets that offer strong growth opportunities across the service provider, enterprise and consumer markets, that include voice, security and video


  • Gross margins were 68.8%, compared to 70.8% for this time last year


  • Of the $5.6 billion in total revenue, product sales represented $4.7 billion and services represented $890 million


  • Revenue by category breaks down as follows: routers represent 23%, switches represent 41%, advanced technology represents 16%, other products represent 4% and services represent 16%


  • Revenue by geography: U.S. sales represented 46% of revenues, EMEA represented 30%, Asia-Pac represented 10%, Japan represented 8% and rest-of-the-Americas represented 6%


  • Cisco has $18.9 billion in cash and investments


  • during the quarter, Cisco repurchased $3.0 billion of its own stock

WilTel Offers Enterprise Networking Services

WilTel Communications, which provides extensive wholesale carrier services, unveiled a strategy for enterprise networking services. New services include Managed Security, which consists of managed firewalls and intrusion detection and Managed Router, which provides pre-configured hardware and software that reduce deployment timeframes on routers.



The company also announced the re-launch of several existing products that have been upgraded to serve the Enterprise market, including MPLS IP VPN and Ethernet WAN. http://www.wiltel.com

AboveNet Launches Wavelength Service in London

AboveNet Communications has launched a managed point-to-point single wavelength service in London. Delivered in a point-to-point configuration, Metro-Express is a single wavelength service enabling the delivery of data across a variety of transport speeds: Fast and Gigabit-Ethernet, STM-1, STM-4, STM-16 and Fibre Channel. The company already offers its CWDM Wavelength Service in 12 U.S. markets. http://www.above.net

Broadcom Announces "BroadSAFE" Security

Broadcom announced a new security-based client management system aimed at helping IT managers to more securely and cost-effectively manage client devices within their enterprise networks.



BroadSAFE combines hardware-based identity management and authentication with FIPS-certifiable key management software. Broadcom plans to incorporate this technology into its networking silicon product lines, including IP phones, enterprise and small-to-medium sized business (SMB) switches, broadband processors and security processors.



OEM customers would have the option of providing a factory-installed identity (i.e. key or digital certificate) that is stored securely within silicon. To achieve an equivalent capability using today's existing security technology would require embedding a FIPS-compliant HSM (hardware

Broadcom Announces 10 Gigabit Optical Transceiver

Broadcom introduced its low power, multi-rate serial 10 Gigabit transceiver for SONET/SDH, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks. The new MSA-compliant device, which represents Broadcom's third generation single-chip, multi-rate transceiver, supports both Very Short Reach (VSR) and Long Reach (LR) optical link applications. The Broadcom BCM8152 multi-rate Gigabit transceiver is targeted for both module and line card applications. http://www.broadcom.com

ITU Selects DMT Encoding Standard for VDSL

The ITU has selected Discrete MultiTone (DMT) line coding as the worldwide standard for VDSL (Very high-speed Digital Subscriber Line) technology. The selection is expected to help accelerate the rollout of triple play services based on VDSL. http://www.itu.int/newsroom/press_releases/2004/08.html
