Verizon Builds Cat1 LTE network for IoT

Verizon is rolling out the world's first Cat1 LTE network features for IoT – ideal for use cases that were previously developed for 2G. V

Chipset platforms currently certified on Verizon's LTE network include Sequans and Altair. Earlier this year, Encore networks certified the world's first Cat1 IoT router solution on Verizon's LTE network.

Verizon said its goal is to make the value proposition for connecting Cat1 IoT applications on LTE in the U.S. as affordable as alternative technologies, while leveraging LTE's reliability.

The company also announced additional tools on its ThingSpace platform, including an expanded set of application program interfaces (APIs) and application enablement platforms (AEPs).  ThingSpace now integrates Bug Labs' dweet APIs and freeboard visualization engine. These new tools enable developers to connect their devices to the Internet, publish the data and create real-time interactive dashboards and control panels visualizing that device data.

"Our goal is to help accelerate market adoption for IoT by making the ecosystem as accessible as possible for developers to bring their solutions to market," said Mark Bartolomeo, vice president, IoT Connected Solutions at Verizon.  "Between our ThingSpace APIs and an expanded set of Cat1 devices deployed on our LTE network we are providing this largely underserved market with the tools needed for endless IoT solutions to be deployed at scale."

Verizon's ThingSpace Ties IoT with Data Analytics and Cloud

Verizon launched ThingSpace, a new IoT platform allowing developers to create applications, customers to manage devices, partners to market their services, and Verizon to launch integrated vertical solutions in an open environment.

Thingspace, which will leverage an existing ecosystem of more than 1,000 channel partners and revenue from the company's IoT and telematics business, promises to accelerate innovation and adoption of IoT devices.  At a press event in San Francisco, Verizon's executives said the industry is poised to move from millions to billions of connected devices and sensors in the coming years. To achieve this, Verizon is creating a new dedicated network core and new connectivity options for the next-generation of IoT use cases in verticals such as agriculture, healthcare, the consumer electronics evolution and the sharing economy.

Verizon has created a core IoT network within its LTE architecture optimized for Cat1 devices.  The company is also working with partners to embed LTE chipsets in a wide-range of connected machines to automate the provisioning process and make it faster to deploy IoT devices on its wide-area network

Significantly, Verizon will offer a big data analytics engine tied into its IoT deployments. ThingSpace will provide end-to-end management of IoT environments and related data, from device to network to application. The goal is to offer hundreds of APIs via the Thingspace environment. The data and analytics engine is being developed at the Verizon labs in Palo Alto, California.

Challenge Up! IoT Start-ups

Cisco, Intel and Deutsche Telekom presented the results from Challenge Up!, the European acceleration and incubation programme for start-ups, which aims to bring promising Internet of Things services and solutions to market at a faster pace.

Twelve IoT start-ups from Europe were selected to showcase their solutions at the "unBound Digital" event this week in London. This follows a six-month acceleration and incubation programme that brought together resources from the three companies to champion and develop IoT innovation among European entrepreneurs, working with start-ups that are transformative in their industries.

Some highlights:

N-joins offers a data analytics solution that makes manufacturing facilities more flexible, efficient and environmentally friendly. N-Join developed the software, while Cisco provides the hardware and Deutsche Telekom the cloud infrastructure. Intel will help to ensure the solution is market-ready, by demonstrating a Proof of Concept with N-Join in factories.

Senic started a joint smart office project by integrating their smart controller into Intel chip-based computers and in the Cisco Telepresence System. Deutsche Telekom will have Senic’s product integrated in their Smart Home platform Qivicon.

ProGlove, a company producing smart gloves for factory workers, is creating a smart supply chain through seamless integration of ProGlove into Supply Chain Monitoring solutions of for example warehouses, logistic and transportation companies. This will be demonstrated through proof of concepts with selected customers from Cisco, Intel and DTAG.

SEMSEYE, dubbed Google Analytics for retailers and shopping malls, runs a pilot with Intel in the Dublin Croke Park Sports stadium and also in Dublin’s museums and libraries, where SEMSEYE is used to monitor visitor flows. Alongside this, Deutsche Telekom installed SEMSEYE in five flagship stores in Romania and two in Poland.

Clouditalia Picks Coriant's Universal Transport Platform

Clouditalia, a provider of integrated telecommunications and cloud services throughout Italy, has selected Coriant's mTera Universal Transport Platform (UTP) for its nationwide cloud services infrastructure. Clouditalia will deploy the multi-terabit, universal switching solution at major network sites to create a service-agnostic architecture capable of cost-effectively integrating diverse traffic types and accelerating the deployment of end-user services. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Seagate and Newisys Demo Flash Storage Architecture Capable of 1TB/s


Seagate Technology and Newisys, which is a division of Sanmina, announced the industry’s fastest flash storage design: 21 Newisys NSS-2601 with dual NSS-HWxEA Storage Server Modules deployed with Seagate’s newest SAS 1200.2 SSD drives.  The drives and storage modules can be combined in a single 42U rack to achieve block I/O performance of 1TB/s with 5PB of storage. Each Newisys 2U server with 60 Seagate SSDs is capable of achieving bandwidth of 49GB/s.

“This solution takes advantage of what high-performance SSDs can offer without sacrificing space, power, cooling or redundancy,” said Eugene McCabe, EVP of the Newisys product division at Sanmina. “Crossing the 1TB/s threshold in a single rack while leveraging industry standard products is a major milestone.”

Tata Communications and Net Insight Eliminate Streaming Lag for Live Events

Tata Communications has joined forces with Net Insight, a specialist in the transport of live, interactive and on-demand content, to enable media organisations to manage and deliver live OTT content globally, in complete sync across all devices, for the first time.

The combination of Tata Communications’ Media Ecosystem, including its Video Connect service, and Net Insight’s OTT solution, enables media organisations to manage and distribute a video feed from any location globally to any device, without any delay, for a truly real-time, interactive and social TV experience, and to better monetise high-value live sports and music events. The companies said this solution marks a significant improvement over conventional OTT content delivery, where typically there is a lag of several seconds to even minutes between the live TV broadcast and the online feed.

Nokia Networks and Telecom Italia Look to Start-ups

Nokia Networks and Telecom Italia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on technology scouting of innovative startups to identify prospective partners in mutually agreed areas such as NFV, SDN, RAN Evolution and next generation SON. The two companies will collaborate on proof-of-Concept deployments of systems, solutions and services.

Sandro Dionisi, Executive Vice President and Director of Global Advisory Services at Telecom Italia, said: "Collaborating with Nokia Networks on this scouting program will open up the opportunity to introduce new network technologies in strategic areas, faster than before, guaranteeing the support of a leading OEM like Nokia Networks. 6WIND Announces NFV Certification Program

6WIND, which supplies high-performance networking software, is launchin its 6WIND Speed Certification Program, which is an ecosystem of software alternatives for high performance virtual networking.

The certification program unites application vendors, Service Providers and Integrators to enable virtual networking and performance for their Network Function Virtualization (NFV) solutions with 6WIND Virtual Accelerator.

Ooma 's Revenue Rises 28% YoY

Ooma, which provides Internet-based telephony services based on a proprietary CPE device and cloud platform, reported Q3 revenue of $23.5 million, up 28% year-over-year. Subscription and services revenue increased 36% to $19.5 million, and was 83% of total revenue. Product and other revenue increased 1% to $4.0 million, and was 17% of total revenue. There was a GAAP net loss of $3.5 million, or $0.21 per basic and diluted share, compared to GAAP net loss of $1.7 million, or $0.72 per basic and diluted share, in the third quarter of fiscal 2015.

Zain Upgrades with Procera's Analytics

Procera Networks announced an extension of its partnership with Zain in Jordan, which has been using the company's PacketLogic products since 2012 to provide better quality of experience (QoE) for its subscribers. The carrier will now expand the deployment to include Procera's analytics family of solutions to leverage the granular network analytics captured.

Zain is also deploying Procera's enforcement solutions with online charging integration (Gy). It enables monetization of over the top services by restricting and enhancing access depending on subscription type.

"Zain has used Procera for the past three years and the solutions have met the business requirements to help Zain in understanding the customers' behavior," said Yousef Al-Mutawe, COO at Zain. "We have decided to continue our partnership with Procera through upgrading the current platform to the new version and adding on top of the data inspection tool the insights analytics solutions.
