Alcatel 1850 Transport Switch Mixes Ethernet, TDM and WDM

Alcatel launched a new metro networking solution that offers flexible mix of Ethernet, TDM and WDM switching in a single platform.

The new Alcatel 1850 TSS can be used to aggregate, switch and transport any combination of Ethernet/MPLS/RPR, SDH/SONET and WDM services. At the heart of the platform is a new "Universal Switch" technology developed by Alcatel, which enables a single matrix to switch any service type. Service specific line cards can be added as they are needed, making investments linear over time and enabling 1850 TSS configurations from 100% circuit to 100% packet, or anything in between. The Alcatel 1850 TSS is initially available in 40 Gbps and 320 Gbps chassis sizes.

Alcatel estimates CAPEX savings of more than 30% and OPEX savings of more than 40%, compared to the alternative architectures based on separate platforms.

Telecom Italia is testing the Alcatel 1850 TSS in a live network for IPTV service delivery in a major Italian city.

Switch and Data Offers 10 GigE Peeing at Three PAIX Sites

Switch and Data has deployed a 10 Gigabit Ethernet platform in three of its hosting facilities . As part of its PAIX peering services, the 10GigE PAIX switch is now operational in Switch and Data's Palo Alto site and in New York City at both 111 8th Avenue and 60 Hudson. Switch and Data said it is the first Internet exchange to offer 10GigE peering capacity on both the East and West Coast.

Limelight Networks, a leading content delivery network, is adding 10GigE ports in Switch and Data's Palo Alto and New York PAIX facilities as part of the build-out of its global content delivery network. During the course of the year Limelight has upgraded its delivery network by stepping up to 10GigE connections and implementing a multicore routing architecture to provide enhanced delivery of high-bandwidth media.

The 10GigE PAIX platform has been extended to 111 8th Avenue and 60 Hudson in New York City after being in full production in Palo Alto since May 2005. Almost 200 peering participants are on the 10GigE platform in Palo Alto and 111 8th today. Customers at 60 Hudson can immediately peer with customers at 111 8th through a Layer 2 MetroPAIX connection of the two New York sites. This interconnection of both 10GigE platforms creates a single peering fabric in New York that allows customers to focus their equipment investment in one facility while benefiting from the choice of peering participants in both - driving significant overall savings. http://www.switchanddata.com/

Zimbra Offers Open Source Messaging Server with AJAX Client

Zimbra, a start-up based in San Mateo, California, unveiled an open source messaging server and client that uses an AJAX-based model for delivering the web service. The Zimbra Collaboration Suite is multi-tiered; on the back end, the collaboration server integrates search, archiving, discovery, anti-spam and anti-virus/security features into a single messaging platform. On the front end, a rich, thin, AJAX-based web client brings e-mail to life through web mash-ups; for example, when viewing an e-mail, users can see their schedule by hovering over a date, or see the status of a purchase order by hovering over the number. Additionally, it is compatible with all leading browsers and enables e-mail, calendar and contact functions to work more effectively across a variety of desktop clients, including Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail.

Zimbra's Public License package is available free of charge. Zimbra's Network Standard Edition is available for $30 per mailbox per year.

Zimbra has raised $16 million in series A and B funding from Accel Partners, Benchmark Capital, Redpoint Ventures and Eric Hahn, former Netscape CTO.
