PMC-Sierra Advances IP-over-OTN Architecture with META 20G

PMC-Sierra announced the latest step in its IP-over-OTN architecture with the unveiling of its PM5422 META 20G device. The META 20G devices enable Carrier Ethernet Switch and Router (CESR) equipment to seamlessly connect to emerging Metro Optical Transport Networks (ITU-T G.709 OTN) with unified end-to-end network management.


The The META 20G device integrates Carrier Ethernet mapping and framing of 10GE LAN and WAN, and OTN mapping of IP-services such as Storage Area Networks (SAN) and video protocols, while maintaining support for deployed technologies such as Packet over SONET/SDH (POS).


META 20G's concurrent framing and mapping of Carrier Ethernet, OTN and SONET/SDH reduces line card variants and simplifies carrier supply chain operations. Flexible system-side interfaces allow for seamless integration onto new and existing line cards with direct-connect to network processors and packet processing engines. Specific capabilities include:

• Broad support of optical modules: Independent, rate-agile SERDES for direct-connect to 10G SFP+ and XFP modules for dense multi-port configurations;



• Any-Service over OTN: Support for 10G LAN, WAN, SAN, Video and POS;



• Carrier Grade 10GE capabilities: Integrated Timing over Packet (IEEE 1588 and SynchE) and Ethernet Link OAM required in latency sensitive applications such as mobile backhaul.

The META 20G is the latest addition to PMC-Sierra's OTN product portfolio. In July, PMC-Sierra introduced its HyPHY 20G and HyPHY 10G devices, which deliver high capacity framing, mapping and multiplexing of Carrier Ethernet, SAN, OTN, transparent bit services such as video, and SONET/SDH. These devices offer client-agnostic, rate-agile Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) and 10 Gigabit pluggable (XFP or SFP+) interfaces and a set of flexible system interfaces for networking to a variety of switch fabric architectures. HyPHY 10G provides a lower density option for optical platforms, while the HyPHY 20G is aimed at higher end platforms.


Target applications include Packet Optical Transport Platforms (P-OTP) such as Carrier Ethernet Switch Routers and Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP).

Sprint Nextel to Acquire iPCS for $831 Million

Sprint Nextel agreed to acquire iPCS for approximately $831 million, including the assumption of $405 million of net debt. The deal provides Sprint with more than 700,000 PCS wireless users and 270,000 wholesale customers. iPCS's services are currently sold under the Sprint brand name and in Sprint-branded stores.


As part of the agreement, Sprint Nextel and iPCS will seek an immediate stay of all pending litigation between the parties with a final resolution to become effective upon closing of the acquisition. As a result, Sprint will no longer be required to divest its iDEN network in certain iPCS territories and will terminate its previously announced divestiture process pending closing of the transaction.


Under the terms of the agreement, Sprint Nextel will commence a cash tender offer to acquire all of iPCS' outstanding common shares for $24.00 per share. This price per share represents a 34 percent premium to iPCS' closing stock price as of October 16, 2009.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications has signed a five-year technology outsourcing services agreement with HP. Under the new agreement, HP will provide infrastructure management services that include Sony Ericsson's global server and storage environments. Additionally, HP will continue to provide global service desk for employee technology and application support. HP also will continue to host and operate Sony Ericsson's SAP enterprise landscape and databases. HP will deliver these services from a combination of Sony Ericsson locations and HP global delivery centers.

Force10 Reports 25% Sequential Growth

Force10 Networks reported that its quarterly bookings increased 25% from the previous quarter for the period ending September 30, 2009.


The company said its ExaScale E-Series virtualized core switch/router, which was introduced in March 2009, made significant contributions to the company's continued momentum. The platform is optimized for deployments in high-performance data centers, computing clusters and service provider carrier Ethernet core markets. Over the past two quarters, Force10 also experienced significant growth in 10 GbE shipments.


In addition the company said its Force10 C-Series and E-Series switch/routers received "Buy American" status by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS).

Alloptic Releases 802.3av-compliant 10Gbps EPON

Alloptic announced availability of its 802.3av compliant 10G EPON edge10 optical line terminal (OLT).


Alloptic's OLT solution delivers 10Gbps EPON, now 802.3av-compliant, with seamless support for both 1G and 10G on the same box. This allows a common fiber infrastructure to concurrently support 1G, 10G and RFoG architectures.


The 160 Gbps switching and aggregation platform supports up to 64 GE-PONs, up to 16 x 10G-EPON per shelf, or a combination of the two. It offers up to 64 GbE or 8 10GE uplinks per shelf. The 10G PON offer the same split ratios as with 1 Gbps. Alloptic's OLT also support multi-vendor ONT interoperability.

Infinera Extends its Digital Optical Reach into Metro Networks

Infinera is extending its digital optical transmission paradigm from the network core into metro markets with the introduction of a new ATN metro WDM edge platform.


With the introduction of this new compact platform and the Infinera submarine solution announced last month, Infinera now provides optical transmission across all segments of the DWDM market: metro, regional/long-haul, and submarine. All systems leverage Infinera's integrated digital bandwidth management.


The ATN is designed to offer seamless integration with an Infinera DTN network with a common network management system, enabling end-to-end service provisioning and visibility.


Infinera said its ATN network, in combination with a DTN network, can offer end-to-end integrated OTN bandwidth management for traffic transiting the network. The Infinera ATN is a compact, metro optical transport platform delivering up to 40 DWDM or 8 CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber pair. Implementing flexible Service Interface Modules (SIMs) with all line-side and client-side interfaces pluggable, the ATN offers flexible configurations to simplify and accelerate network deployment. TI's Revenue Rises 17% in Q3 over Q2

Texas Instruments reported Q3 2009 revenue of$2.88 billion, net income of $538 million and earnings per share (EPS) of $0.42.


TI's revenue declined 15 percent compared with the third quarter of 2008 and increased 17 percent compared with the second quarter of 2009. The decline from a year ago was the result of declines across all segments, particularly the Wireless segment. The increase from the prior quarter was due to growth in all segments, particularly the Analog segment.


Despite revenue that was $507 million lower compared with the year-ago quarter, TI's operating profit grew $17 million primarily due to lower operating expenses, as well as lower manufacturing costs.


"Our performance in the quarter exceeded our expectations and was led by a second consecutive quarter of 20-percent growth in Analog," said Rich Templeton, TI chairman, president and CEO. Verizon announced its s first "quad-play" of wireless calling, home phone, broadband Internet and TV services. Verizon customers in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets can get all four services on one bill, with discounts from $59 to $179 per year depending on the package.
