Juniper Intros Smaller, Faster QFabric for Midsized Data Centers

Juniper Networks introduced a smaller version of its QFabric System aimed at mid-sized data centers.

The QFabric architecture, which was first unveiled in February 2011 and began shipping in September 2011, collapses multilayer data center infrastructure into a single, any-to-any fabric that unifies networking, storage and cloud computing resources. The product set is composed of three components that create a high-performance, low latency fabric. The QF/Node acts as the distributed decision engine of the fabric; the QF/Interconnect is the high speed transport device; and the QF/Director delivers a common window, controlling all devices as one.

The first implementation of QFabric scales to 6,000 network nodes, allowing any network interface within the network to connect to any other interface in a single hop. Juniper achieves this 6,000 port switching fabric by decoupling the line cards on the central fabric and moving them out into the network using dual-homed fiber connections. The entire 6,000 node network is a single switch and can be managed as such.

The new model, called the QFX3000-M QFabric System, a new model is designed for mid-tier data centers, satellite data centers and new 10GbE data center pods as well as space-constrained environments. Specifically, the QFX3000-M leverages a new fixed form-factor interconnect, the Juniper Networks QFX3600-I, which enables scalability from 48 10GbE ports and up to 6,144 10GbE ports using the QFX3000-G QFabric System. The smaller version delivers three microseconds latency, compared with five microseconds for the larger Qfabric.

In addition, Juniper has added enhancements to its EX8200 switches running Virtual Chassis technology, enabling customers for the first time to manage up to four data center cores as a single switch. Each data center core may be up to 80km distant.

VSS Monitoring Offers Packet Visibility into Virtual Switching Infrastructure

VSS Monitoring is now supporting virtual network tag (VN-Tag) stripping and filtering, enabling enterprises to have dynamic access, selective visibility, and management of all packets across physical and virtual environments.

VSS Monitoring notes that most performance monitoring and security tools, as well as traffic aggregation devices, do not have the capability to deliver visibility into or inspect virtual traffic when VN-Tags are used to deliver packets between virtual and physical Cisco Nexus network infrastructures. Its network packet broker appliances now support VN-Tags leveraging both stripping and filtering capabilities. Enterprises offloading virtual traffic switching to their existing physical switching infrastructure can now access this virtual network traffic for monitoring, analysis and security with VSS Monitoring VN-Tag stripping functionality without changing their existing tools.

For VM traffic on physical Cisco Nexus networks that needs to be accessed by third party monitoring and security tools, VSS Monitoring network packet brokers provide seamless access and visibility into the VM traffic, filter traffic based on the VN-Tag VIF ID, and strip the VN-Tags. Granular filtering and flow-based load balancing can also be performed on the virtual traffic being forwarded, making network tools perform more efficiently even as their overall traffic load grows due to increased VM workloads. http://www.vssmonitoring.com

Ixia Launches Carrier-Grade, High-Density, 40Gbps Network Monitoring Switch

Following on its recent acquisition of Anue Systems, Ixia introduced a carrier-grade, high-density, 40Gbps network monitoring switch. The Anue Net Tool Optimizer (NTO) 5293, which extends the existing Anue network visibility product line, is designed to help operators improve data center productivity by connecting multiple network monitoring tools to a large number of 40GbE, 10GbE, and 1GbE interfaces. The network monitoring switch facilitates end-to-end visibility into the packet network, including the 4G LTE packet core.

Key features of the Anue NTO 5293 include:

  • 640Gbps, non-blocking backplane for up to 16 40GbE ports or up to 64 10GbE ports in a 2 rack unit chassis

  • Redundant features to ensure uninterrupted network visibility where high availability is required

  • Drag-and-drop control panel allows users to aggregate, filter and distribute network traffic to monitoring tools with a few mouse clicks — both boosting productivity and lowering operating expense

  • NEBS Level 1 certified and NEBS Level 3 certification in progress, for reliable telecommunications network monitoring.
